Mirror of Fate se sitúa entre lo más granado del catálogo de 3DS, merced a su excelente adaptación de las mecánicas “hack and slash” de Lords of Shadow. Mercury Steam ha sabido sorber toda la sangre de la portátil.

Mercury Steam vuelve a anteponer su visión y a creer en sí misma con un Castlevania, en esta ocasión portátil, que supone un "reboot" con respecto a los clásicos de Konami en 2D. Un videojuego con elementos Metroidvania, un sistema de combate puramente Lords of Shadow y una gran duración que puede llegar a superar las 10 horas. En definitiva, un cartucho potente en lo jugable pero aún más en lo tecnológico, sacando provecho del potencial de Nintendo 3DS tanto en su vertiente estereoscópica como puramente gráfica. Todo un referente para las futuras aventuras de esta consola y una parada obligada para todos aquellos que posean -o quieran hacerse- con la plataforma.

Mirror of Fate tendrá la gran ventaja de combinar su jugabilidad con distintos personajes. La impotencia estará muy presente en esta entrega cada vez que se vea un objeto imposible de alcanzar y al que haya que regresar más tarde. En momentos concretos se encontrarán portales de teletransporte para ahorrarnos un valioso tiempo de recorrer una y otra vez el castillo de Drácula. Cabe resaltar los encuentros entre Simon y Alucard y la responsabilidad que siente el segundo sobre su hijo y las veces que le ayuda en el juego. Como ya se mencionó antes, la visión 3D será muy recomendable en las secuencias de vídeo y para echar un vistazo de vez en cuando al gran trabajo de Mercury Steam en la multitud de planos de profundidad destinados a los paisajes y salas del castillo tan logradas como la juguetería o el teatro.

Castlevania Lords of Shadow: Mirror of Fate (questo il lunghissimo titolo completo della produzione Konami) è un discreto action game, lontano però dall'eccellenza del suo predecessore. Il passaggio allo scorrimento bidimensionale avrebbe probabilmente richiesto un lavoro più attento sul combat system, che risulta invece abbastanza basilare e, sulle prime, anche poco ispirato. I guizzi del titolo si avvertono proprio nel momento in cui l'anima action lascia il centro della scena alle sequenze esplorative tipiche di un buon adventure game. Salvo poi ritornare durante i boss fight, con risultati anche discreti. Nonostante un inizio sottotono, grazie alla presenza di tre protagonisti in fondo molto diversi fra loro il titolo riesce a creare un'ottima progressione, inchiodando l'appassionato della saga di fronte ai piccoli schermi del Nintendo 3DS. Mancano le rifiniture: un sistema ruolistico interessante, un backtracking meglio congegnato, aree del castello maggiormente ispirate dal punto di vista artistico e stilistico. Però in Mirror of Fate c'è una buona varietà, qualche sequenza davvero ostica e, sul finire dell'avventura, anche una discreta quantità di solidissimi momenti action. Il lavoro sulla continuity di Castlevania, molto coraggioso, sfida le convinzioni dei fan e riesce ad espandere l'universo di Lords of Shadow.

You can't go in thinking your getting Lords of Shadow on 3DS, because you're not. Mirror of Fate goes back even deeper into the Castlevania catalog, and harnesses strengths from a bygone era, while looking about as good as a game can look on a four inch screen.

Mercurysteam has the potential to become Konami’s most valuable developer, but it has a long way to go. Mirror of Fate can feel schizophrenic and almost improvisational in its design, but it also feels more distinctive and energetic than Lords of Shadow. Rather than an homage to other games and genres, this 3DS game feels like a developer stretching out and testing its limits. It even feels more like a proper Castlevania game. Even without all its callbacks and references to past entries, it nails the game’s mixed atmosphere of cartoon bombast and dread. It may be imperfect, but it’s exciting game making. The next time Mercurysteam shows up, we can’t wait to see what happens.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate è purtroppo un gioco discreto e nulla più. Una valutazione che certamente non è condizionata dai paragoni coi precedenti capitoli bidimensionali della serie diretti da Igarashi; siamo noi stessi convinti, pur amando molto gli episodi classici, che il franchise Konami dovesse necessariamente cambiare e trasformarsi in qualcosa di diverso, anche su portatili. Il lavoro di MercurySteam è però afflitto da numerose problematiche, è benché sia evidente l'impegno e la passione nella realizzazione, è perennemente assente il senso di qualità e l'attenzione per il dettaglio che contraddistingue i grandi giochi da quelli divertenti e nulla più. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate è un titolo che scorre via senza picchi e acuti, che si gioca con piacere ma che non lascia praticamente nulla una volta completato. Peccato.

Malgré quelques atouts comme le système de combat, Mirror of Fate n'a pas bénéficié de l'excellence qui caractérise normalement les bons épisodes de la série. Hormis quelques fulgurances, le titre des studios MercurySteam se perd régulièrement dans les méandres de l'anonymat, que ce soit au niveau des graphismes, des cinématiques, des énigmes, des phases de plates-formes ou de la structure générale du soft. Sa durée de vie pourrait aussi être pointée du doigt, d'autant plus que les occupations annexes ne sont pas légion.

The greatest shame with Mirror of Fate is that its heart is in the right place. As far as I can tell, MercurySteam did its absolute best to chart its own course with handheld Castlevania, one that borrows from the greatness that came before it, but without copying it outright. But in going off the beaten path, the studio ended up diluting what has made Castlevania so great in the last 15 years. Its emphasis on fragmented exploration and shallow leveling is the exact opposite of what Castlevania fans like myself love, want and have come to expect. Stranger yet is the fact that Castlevania: Lords of Shadow got what Castlevania was all about a lot more than many people gave it credit for. But that understanding hasn’t at all segued to the Nintendo 3DS version. I beat Mirror of Fate in just under nine hours with an 88% completion rating, and it wouldn’t take me more than an hour more to get it up to 100%. I simply don’t want to play anymore, which should tell you all you need to know. Because even the worst of the GBA/DS Castlevania games are more than worth seeing to statistical completion, but Mirror of Fate isn’t worth playing at all.
