A la manière d'une partie de cache-cache haletante, Little Nightmares capture avec justesse ce moment terrifiant où vous craignez d'être découvert. Mais il dépeint aussi le sentiment d'horreur qu'un enfant peut éprouver lorsqu'il ne comprend pas ce qui se passe autour de lui, et la façon dont un environnement familier peut se transformer en une série d'opportunités mêlant sécurité et danger. Intelligent, grotesque et constamment étrange, il s'agit d'un jeu d'horreur remarquable et unique en son genre, dont les cinq heures de jeu m'ont paru désespérément trop courtes.

Like Hide and Seek, Little Nightmares confidently captures the exhilarating fear of waiting to be found by something that’s hunting you. But it also replicates the alien horror of being a child that doesn’t understand what’s happening to and around them, and of a seemingly familiar environment turned into a series of opportunities for safety and danger. Smart, grotesque and never-endingly weird, this is a very different, extremely welcome kind of horror game that left me wanting more than its brief five hours provides.

Sulla scia di Limbo, Inside e Unravel, Little Nightmares è un platform narrativo che arriva dal Nord Europa e che punta forte sulle emozioni e sull'esperienza - marcatamente horror in questo caso, pur senza mai scadere nel gore esplicito ma riuscendo lo stesso a disturbare - piuttosto che sul gameplay (anche se i maligni potrebbero dire proprio "a scapito del gameplay"). Non avrà l'originalità di Limbo, non avrà la brillantezza di certi puzzle di Unravel e non avrà l'ispirazione - né la supponenza un po' paracula, lasciatemelo dire - di Inside, eppure Tarsier Studios è riuscita a dare un'anima non comune alla sua creatura: la cura c'è e si vede (a cominciare dalla grafica e dal sonoro, a dir poco degni di nota!) e se siete alla ricerca di un videogioco capace di trasportarvi per qualche ora in una dimensione tanto angosciante quanto ricca di fascino, accomodatevi pure. Six saprà guidarvi per mano nel suo mondo, ma attenzione a non finire sbranati dalle Fauci: potreste persino lasciarci un pezzetto di cuore.

Pur essendo un'esperienza fugace, Little Nightmares si contraddistingue per alcune idee interessanti, viene sostenuto da un'atmosfera affascinante e da una realizzazione artistica unica nel suo genere. L'alternanza tra la risoluzione degli enigmi e i momenti di fuga offre continui cambi di ritmo dal punto di vista ludico, sebbene le meccaniche proposte si mantengano sostanzialmente inalterate dall'inizio del racconto fino al suo epilogo. Senza ombra di dubbio si sarebbe potuto fare uno sforzo ulteriore per quanto riguarda la durata della storia. Come diciamo spesso, la lunghezza non è necessariamente sinonimo di qualità, tuttavia in questo caso specifico non ci sarebbe dispiaciuto poter attraversare almeno un altro paio di livelli e godere di un'esperienza un po' più duratura.

Avec un titre pareil, attendez-vous à avoir gentiment peur, comme lorsque vous vous retrouviez seul dans le noir, entouré de drôles de bruits, de portes qui claquent, de plancher qui grince, de singe à timbales qui se déclenche comme par magie... Little Nightmares évoque ainsi parfaitement ces petites craintes de l'enfance, sous la forme d'un plateformer bien conçu distillant une ambiance glauque à souhait. Le frisson est de courte durée, sa conclusion vous laissera probablement dubitatif mais la maîtrise générale et cette poésie si nordique ne devraient pas vous laisser indifférent.

Wer Spiele im Stil von Limbo oder Inside mag, der wird auch Little Nightmares lieben! Die gelungene Mischung aus cleveren Umgebungsrätseln, Stealthansätzen und Geschicklichkkeit gefällt mir richtig gut und sorgt darüber hinaus für angenehme Tempowechsel innerhalb der leider viel zu kurzen Reise durch den Schlund. Der wahre Star ist aber das fantastische Artdesign, das stellenweise an die Werke von Tim Burton erinnert und sowohl von der stimmungsvollen Beleuchtung als auch der gelungenen Kameraführung klasse in Szene gesetzt wird. Vor allem die herrlich bizarren Figuren haben es mir neben den stimmungsvollen Kulissen und der großartigen Sounduntermalung angetan: Sie strahlen schon allein aufgrund ihren Aussehens, aber selbstverständlich auch durch ihr Verhalten ein ständiges Gefühl der Bedrohung aus und sorgen mit ihren Auftritten nicht nur für einen steigenden Puls, sondern auch für den einen oder anderen Anfall von Schnappatmung. Leider enttäuschen sowohl das plötzliche Ende als auch die vielen offenen Fragen. Dadurch verbauen sich die Entwickler trotz der mitunter awardverdächtigen Ansätze den Weg in höhere Wertungsregionen. Das Potenzial dazu hätte Little Nightmares auf jeden Fall gehabt, doch so bleibt es am Ende „nur“ bei einer guten Alternative zu Limbo & Co.

Little Nightmares resta un titolo affascinante, tecnicamente più che solido e capace di sintetizzare un immaginario d'impatto. Il gioco insegue il canone di "colleghi" molto celebri, ma lo fa senza risultare derivativo, proprio grazie all'efficace lavoro creativo del team di sviluppo. Stile, atmosfere e ambientazioni sono intriganti, alcune scene risultano ansiogene e destabilizzanti, e un paio di situazioni (come le inaspettate boss fight) riescono persino a risultare memorabili. Alla fine dei conti, però, la produzione fatica a saziare completamente l'utente: lo lascia invece in balia della curiosità, ad immaginare quali altri spazi il team avrebbe potuto inventare, e quali altre soluzioni ludiche avrebbe potuto adottare per rendere l'avanzamento leggermente più strutturato e impegnativo. Per certi versi, insomma, Little Nightmares rappresenta quasi il movimento inaugurale di una nuova serie, che speriamo possa in qualche modo trovare completamento in futuro.

Hâtif dans sa conclusion, Little Nightmares n'en est pas moins intéressant par son voyage. Bien rythmé et doté d'un univers accrocheur, il peine toutefois à se hisser au niveau d'un titre tel qu'Inside à cause de choix de level design discutables et d'une prise en main perfectible. Si vous accordez davantage d'importance à l'ambiance et l'immersion qu'à une maniabilité exemplaire, vous serez plus à même d'apprécier l'expérience proposée par le jeu de Tarsier. Dans le cas contraire, vous ne pourrez que constater la perfectibilité d'un soft qui, heureusement, ne manque tout de même pas de qualités et d'atouts pour venir se nicher dans votre ludothèque.

Little Nightmares is like the long, intense screech of a violin before the jump scare - except that the scare never comes and the sound eventually fades to the background. Yes, it’s dark and moody, but after establishing the atmosphere it never evolves into something that’s really worth playing.
