While Square Enix is largely focused on the future with upcoming games like Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts 3, they are not one to forget the past, of which I Am Setsuna is a perfect example. Taking a character driven story that will keep players coming back for hours and combining it with a classic gameplay style works exceptionally well, making I Am Setsuna one game that not just ’90s RPG fans will love, but even general fans of the genre should really enjoy.

Pur non brillando per durata e originalità, I am Setsuna centra il bersaglio con una storia intrigante, una caratterizzazione dei personaggi esemplare (come imposto da produzioni di questo tipo), e un gameplay che ripesca alcune delle migliori meccaniche presenti nel magnifico Chrono Trigger. Il tutto è contornato da una realizzazione tecnica che lascia a bocca aperta per la bellezza di personaggi e paesaggi, la nitidezza dei colori, l’elevato numero di dettagli e non per ultima una colonna sonora puntuale e adatta a ogni situazione. Considerando che questo è solo il primo titolo sviluppato da Tokyo RPG Factory, il futuro della nuova branca di Square Enix promette molto bene, specie se le future produzioni potranno contare su budget più ampi. Ne consigliamo l’acquisto a tutti gli amanti del genere, e magari anche a qualche giocatore più giovane che voglia provare l’ATB senza dover necessariamente darsi al retrogaming. In ogni caso, il prezzo budget dovrebbe rappresentare un ulteriore incentivo per chiunque.

A lack of balance robs the combat of much of its fun and renders many of the more interesting gameplay systems moot, but it didn’t dampen the emotional impact of I Am Setsuna’s heartfelt message for me. Few story-driven RPGs are so thematically focused or so gleefully disinterested with being “entertaining” or “fun.” To say it attempts to stand on the backs of giants is disingenuous really. I Am Setsuna isn’t a “Chrono Trigger-like;” it’s just a game that might easily have existed in the same time, if a creator with different storytelling sensibilities had been around. Its strength comes not from the ways in which it emulates the conventions of the classics, but in the ways in which it defies them.

I Am Setsuna è un titolo piccolo, che si nasconde dietro la nobile impresa di voler riproporre un modo di fare giochi di ruolo che (forse) non esiste più. Lo fa con stile e grande atmosfera, ma con poca ambizione e con una generale mancanza di identità, pescando a piene mani da alcuni capisaldi del genere e non riuscendo ad aggiungere niente. La trama, nonostante i suoi limiti la sua generale piattezza, è forse uno degli aspetti che più possono affascinare, in memoria di quelle storie più intime e lontane dal feeling da “blockbuster” delle produzioni odierne. I personaggi sono ben caratterizzati e, al di là di una generale mancanza di spessore, il battle system diverte, con una minima personalizzazione dei personaggi che salva un sistema altrimenti noioso su tutta la linea, come in parte il mondo di gioco e la fin troppo ripetitiva colonna sonora. I Am Setsuna è quindi un titolo controverso, perché appassiona ed emoziona in alcuni frangenti e delude in altri, e lì la nostalgia non è sufficiente, ci sarebbe voluto qualcosa di più. Un peccato, davvero, perché la delicata storia di Setsuna sarebbe potuta essere sicuramente più memorabile, se solo i ragazzi di Tokyo RPG Factory avessero messo da parte la nostalgia per il passato in favore di qualcosa di più personale e coraggioso.

I am Setsuna è un titolo che piacerà soprattutto ai fan più nostalgici dei JRPG vecchia scuola, anche se i rimandi ai più famosi esponenti del genere sono talvolta un po' eccessivi. I problemi del titolo Square Enix riguardano più che altro la superficialità con la quale sono state trattate alcune meccaniche del gameplay e la ripetitività di situazioni e scenari: sono i limiti di un prodotto low budget sui quali avremmo volentieri soprasseduto, non fosse stato per il suo prezzo un po' elevato. In questo senso, ci sentiamo di consigliare I am Setsuna solo agli appassionati del genere che cercano un piacevole JRPG mordi e fuggi da completare in poche ore senza troppe paranoie.

I am Setsuna est un RPG qui, tel un certain Chrono Trigger, nous fait remonter dans le temps. Bien qu'étant en 2016, on jurerait jouer à un jeu sorti fin des années 90. Visuellement on est revenu plusieurs générations en arrière et son scénario a été vu et revu des dizaines de fois. Toutefois, laissez-lui sa chance car c'est un RPG au système de combat calibré à la perfection, une personnalisation des héros aux possibilités quasi-infinies et une bande originale majestueuse qui vous tend les bras pendant la trentaine d'heures nécessaire pour le terminer.

Ich mag Rollenspiele alter Schule. Aber I Am Setsuna lässt mich fast einschlafen. Weder die statische Inszenierung noch die über weite Strecken kinderleichten Kämpfe oder die eindimensionale Charakterentwicklung können mich wach halten. Lediglich die plötzlich beinharten Bosse sowie das dort nötige Management der kombinierbaren Spezialfähigkeiten vitalisieren den Kreislauf so weit, dass ich diesen Test schreiben kann. Zwischen Gemütlichkeit und Langeweile verläuft manchmal ein schmaler Grat, aber hier reißen die Entwickler nach dem stimmungsvollen Einstieg einen steil abfallenden Graben auf – da knistert nichts, da gähnt man nur. Erkundungsreize oder tolle Quests? Fehlanzeige. Da hilft auch die Nostalgiebrille nicht, denn Tokyo RPG Factory serviert bis auf die angenehm melancholische Stimmung sowie einige erzählerische Überraschungen nur Spieldesign von der ganz alten Stange, zumal das putzig-naive Artdesign mit all seinen Wiederholungen ebenfalls keine Akzente setzen kann. So entsteht trotz einer Story, die mit Schuld, Trauer und Schicksal spielt, viel zu schnell eine emotionale Distanz. Dass man das Wesen klassischer Abenteuer wesentlich besser einfangen kann, indem man sie moderner interpretiert und kreativ bereichert, haben u.a. Spiele wie Ni No Kuni oder 3D Dot Game Heroes demonstriert.

I Am Setsuna seems like the perfect game for those missing the Golden Age of Japanese RPGs, but unfortunately it has been painted with a shallow brush. The story moves at an uncontrolled pace, never truly developing any of the characters or their motives, and fails to establish the emotional connection the developers were aiming for. The combat, while brings back memories of the good ol’ days from classic RPGs, becomes dull at a rather quick rate thanks to the one-note encounter setup and unvaried dungeon layouts. From the presentation side of things, the soundtrack has a well-executed selection of piano melodies, but the visuals become overly monotonous. Who would have thought a game with a snowy setting such as this would look so dull? There’s some good to be discovered in I Am Setsuna, but it’s overshadowed by its sheer unoriginality and repetitiveness.
