The King of Fighters XIV une lo mejor del género en su máximo apogeo, en los noventa, con un apartado gráfico que, aunque es mejorable, está a la altura de la actual generación. Cincuenta personajes, jugabilidad clásica y contenidos de todo tipo desde el inicio conforman una oferta única en el género. Indispensable si te gusta minimamente la lucha.

Il quattordicesimo episodio di King of Fighters è un picchiaduro che va subito al sodo. Non si perde in inutili prodezze grafiche e riesce a restituire ai fan il caro vecchio combat system, impeccabile, ed enorme, quasi quanto le ghiandole mammarie di Mai Shiranui. Il sistema di combattimento non risente neanche del tentativo di rendere il gioco accessibile a qualche neofita temerario, tramite alcune piccole semplificazioni nell’innesco delle combo. Un roster sconfinato e un netcode piuttosto stabile faranno sicuramente gola anche ai fan che proprio non riescono a mandar giù il restyling grafico deciso da SNK. King of Fighters è tornato, insomma, come recita il messaggio inviatoci da un ragazzetto giapponese incredibilmente bravo, durante le sessioni di prova.

King of Fighters XIV brings one of the genre's longest running franchises to the current generation with mixed results visually. The gameplay is deep should players want to explore it and friendly to newcomers just jumping on with the series. The soundtrack is fantastic and the net code is far improved over its predecessor. We have a winner folks.

The King of Fighters XIV nos ha sorprendido con una propuesta jugable completa y profunda, que se va abriendo a medida que controlamos más y más su sistema de combate. A esto hay que sumar que se trata de un juego con la friolera de 50 personajes diferentes, varios modos de juego tanto si jugamos solo como acompañados, y unas opciones online que, al menos de momento, han resistido la prueba del lag a pesar del desastroso resultado de The King of Fighters XIII. Puede que visualmente no tenga tanto carisma, ni resulte tan espectacular como podríamos esperar de un juego de lucha actual, pero esa es la menor de las pegas para una producción tan bien acabada en el resto de sus apartados.

Though its visuals still betray the legacy of SNK’s rich and gorgeous 2D sprite work, The King of Fighters XIV revives the glory of the franchise where it counts most: gameplay and core mechanics. King of Fighters XIV offers an astonishing amount of content, with nearly double the playable characters of most other games available on day one. The fighters themselves are interesting and well designed, both visually and mechanically, and they push limits with an execution ceiling higher than perhaps any other fighting game. King of Fighters XIV’s netcode and technical shortcomings are itis biggest stumbling blocks, but mastering its characters and leveraging what you’ve learned remains satisfying regardless. There are no shortcuts to becoming the new King of Fighters, but the journey to the top is well worth taking.

On s'est moqué de lui, mais The King of Fighters revient et donne la leçon. Certes, le jeu n'est pas vraiment joli, mais il se repose avant tout sur un gameplay qui se veut plus accessible que par le passé, sans perdre en profondeur de jeu. Avec ses animations, sa bande-son et sa jouabilité aux petits oignons, KoF XIV propose des combats techniques au dynamisme hypnotisant. Comme en plus il se permet le luxe d'être extrêmement complet, difficile de le bouder lorsque l'on aime les bons jeux de combat. Entre un Street Fighter V qui accumule les déboires, et un Guilty Gears Xrd Revelator peut-être plus hermétique, King of Fighters a peut-être un joli coup à jouer cette année. On en reparle d'ici un an.

Tra vecchie e nuove conoscenze, è giunta la fine del torneo anche per il KOFXIV, e non resta altro che annunciare vincitori, vinti e qualche menzione al merito… Il passaggio alla nuova generazione di console ha portato un rinnovamento anche nella veste grafica della serie, che passa dal vetusto ma sempre apprezzato 2D, alla grafica tridimensionale che ormai è praticamente lo standard del genere. Il livello estetico finale non fa gridare al miracolo, ma il titolo resta comunque un gioco fluido, veloce ed abbastanza tecnico tanto da divertire sicuramente i fan di lunga data. Buoni i controlli, anche se a livelli estremi tendono ad essere troppo stretti per il semplice pad, richiedendo a gran voce l’uso di un meno diffuso arcade stick. Più che buona l’offerta in termini di modalità di gioco, che per fortuna dà qualcosina in più rispetto al minimo sindacale che ci si aspetterebbe da un titolo del genere. In conclusione, KOFXIV merita almeno un gradino sul podio, e risulta essere sia un buon capitolo di passaggio generazionale per gli amanti storici (ed attempati) della serie, che un buon inizio per le giovani leve che non hanno mai partecipato a questo iconico torneo. Dandovi infine appuntamento come sempre sulle pagine di GameSoul per le prossime botte da orbi, vogliamo lasciarvi con quesito tendenzialmente retorico: ma Geese Howard non era morto?

The King of Fighters XIV Ultimate Edition è la versione completa dell'ultimo picchiaduro targato SNK, dotata fin da subito degli otto personaggi extra e dunque di un roster che si arricchisce ulteriormente. Giocarci è ancora un piacere, al netto di una struttura relativamente povera e di un comparto tecnico che si conferma modesto. Il problema grosso, però, è il tempismo: con il quindicesimo capitolo dietro l'angolo e l'edizione base quasi sempre in promozione a pochi spiccioli, chi spenderà 39,99 euro per questa edizione definitiva?

King of Fighters remains what it has always been with its latest entry: a niche fighter with a great cast, an unforgiving learning curve, and a lot of heart anchored by an incredible fighting engine. It’s not for everyone; no game is. But if you’re willing to dedicate yourself to it, and learn it, it’s a tournament worth entering and a fight worth fighting, all these years later.
