Sword Coast Legends is a solid loot crawl with more options than most games of its kind. It may not be the Dungeons & Dragons simulator many were hoping for, but it works well as just a straight video game. There are some hiccups, mainly in the graphics, optimization and customization departments, but its host of modes, delightful story, clever writing and the ability to play player-run and -created campaigns solo or with others, on top of having a creation suite for those who want to play the part of dungeon master, all make for a content-rich experience. The combat and overall gameplay mechanics can prove a bit shallow at times, never offering the depth or tactical veracity of Pillars of Eternity, but as a hybrid of Baldur’s Gate and Neverwinter Nights, Sword Coast Legends is a game that mostly excels in all that it tries to do. Post-release will be an interesting time, though, as the limited and sometimes restrictive options are opened up and iterated on by N-Space. Until that time comes, however, it’s a good game with the capacity to be great.

Sword Coast Legends features a reasonably strong campaign as it advances and is great to listen to and look at, however it can be terribly linear throughout. The shallow combat system, with lack of skill variety and shallow dungeon master mode detract just a little too much and stop the game being great.

Con una buena faceta multijugador y un editor de contenidos que promete brindarnos alegrías en el futuro, Sword Coast: Legends no es ni de lejos esa gran aventura de rol que esperábamos. Demasiado simple en tantos aspectos, poco puede hacer frente a otros títulos de índole similar que brillan por la profundidad de sus combates, la libertad de acción, o la elegancia y brillantez en la escritura de su guión. Divertido cuando se disfruta en compañía de amigos, hay mucho potencial por explotar en esta obra. Lástima que se haya quedado a medio camino de conseguirlo.

In tutta sincerità, non abbiamo ben compreso le intenzioni di n-Space e Digital Extremes. Se l'obiettivo era quello di creare un GDR confuso ed abbastanza anonimo rispetto ai competitor con cui si trova a dover condividere l'attuale fetta di mercato, ci sono riusciti in pieno. Se, invece, volevano dare lustro alla pesantissima licenza D&D creando qualcosa di speciale, "sponsorizzando" al contempo la quinta edizione del regolamento, beh, qualcosa è andato terribilmente storto. Sword Coast Legends, infatti, non ha il carattere per poggiare sui granitici canoni dei giochi di ruolo di cui vorrebbe raccogliere l'eredità. Il titolo, nonostante le molte correzioni effettuate in corsa, soffre non solo di molte debolezze intrinseche dal punto di vista tecnico, ma anche di una profonda indecisione tra classicità e modernità. Un bipolarismo confusionario che rimanda, ancora una volta, l'appuntamento con un vero Dungeons & Dragons. Il titolo dovrebbe giungere anche su console di nuova generazione nel corso di quest'anno e noi lo attenderemo al varco. Chissà, magari su console il titolo potrebbe presentarsi sotto una luce differente.

On the whole, Sword Coast Legends usually works, but that’s all I can say for it. There’s an obvious love for the lore on display, but there are no Minscs or Boos here; no thrilling battles where victory springs as much from brains as endurance. The great tragedy of Sword Coast Legends is that the last couple of years have all but paved the way for it to emerge as the best of the cRPG renaissance, but its dull cooldown-based combat, linear quests, and cookie-cutter user-made content ensure that it's likely to be among the first to be forgotten.

L'impressione che si prova giocando a Sword Coast Legends è quella di un'occasione mancata, un po' per le ristrette tempistiche in cui è stato rilasciato, un po' perché ci si attendeva qualcosa di veramente grosso considerando la licenza di D&D. Senza quell'importante nome nel titolo staremmo parlando di un gioco di ruolo al più onesto, mediocre se paragonato all'irraggiungibile solidità di Pillars of Eternity. C'è però da dire che il titolo ha delle basi solide su cui si possono costruire nuove avventure, magari anche più profonde della campagna iniziale: n-Space in passato ha dimostrato di saper supportare molto bene le proprie produzioni e la possibilità di monetizzare futuri upgrade (peraltro in parte già annunciati sul sito ufficiale del gioco) con la vendita dei vituperati DLC potrebbe vitaminizzare questo RPG che, oggi come oggi, si rivela essere una grossa delusione.

Un'occasione sprecata malamente. A volte si intravede per brevi momenti quello che Sword Coast Legends avrebbe potuto diventare, ma la realizzazione finale lascia tristemente a desiderare. Ogni parte e componente che ha reso grandi i più famosi titoli ispirati a Dungeons & Dragons sono lì, visibili, ma appena si scava sotto la superficie si scopre che sono stati implementati senza reale capacità.

Le plus grand malheur de Sword Coast Legends, c’est d’être sorti en pleine période de renouveau du RPG à l’ancienne avec un concept qui ne fait malheureusement pas dans l’originalité. Il y a quelques années, le titre aurait pu susciter un intérêt bien plus grand, mais c’était sans compter la sortie récente de titres comme Divinity Original Sin ou encore Pillars of Eternity à côté desquels la campagne solo du jeu peine à s’affirmer. Il lui restait alors une carte à jouer, celle de son mode Maître de jeu permettant de créer et de masteriser des campagnes dans un pur esprit JDR papier. Mais là encore, la tentative manque d’envergure et se fait plomber par un gameplay peu inspiré. Dommage.
