Despite only clocking in at around four hours, The Suicide of Rachel Foster is a game that had me hooked until the very end. Its narrative may centre around sensitive themes, but the quality in which its written and delivered elicits a genuine emotional response. It’s simply a must-play for fans of narrative-driven games.

Un walking simulator sulla scia di Gone Home e Firewatch, con un hotel inquietante da esplorare e una storia drammatica che affronta temi difficili, almeno uno dei quali andava trattato però probabilmente in un modo diverso. Le poche ore che dura sono proporzionate al prezzo ridotto (al momento 16,99 euro su Steam e GOG).

The Suicide of Rachel Foster è un ottimo punto di partenza per ONE-O-ONE GAMES, che si ispira molto sia ad altri videogiochi del suo genere sia a pellicole come Shining per creare una crescente situazione di tensione sulla base di un bagaglio culturale che affonda in anni e anni di horror e thriller paranormali: avremmo preferito una maggior fluidità narrativa nel trascorrere dei giorni, che usa l’escamotage visto nel film di Kubrick ma spezza un po’ troppo la tensione e la continuità. Allo stesso modo, il gioco avrebbe potuto sfruttare maggiormente quella tensione che concorre a creare, provando a disorientare il giocatore anziché farlo proseguire sui binari della linearità: le fasi di gameplay vero e proprio sono interessanti e avrebbero potuto essere integrate di più, ma ci riteniamo soddisfatti. The Suicide of Rachel Foster è un “buona la prima” con solo qualche piccola riserva, che ha dalla sua un’ambientazione visivamente molto curata e una storia matura, ma manca di quel guizzo utile a farlo emergere con la giusta grinta. Rimane comunque un prodotto al quale guardare con ammirazione nell’ambito dello sviluppo italiano.

The Suicide of Rachel Foster propone un’esperienza interattiva in cui è la trama a farla da padrone: la storia intessuta da One-O-One Games tocca temi molto delicati, e di tanto in tanto sfocia nella prevedibilità, ma con un pizzico di mystery e una discreta gestione del ritmo ci conduce intelligentemente verso i titoli di coda. Resta solo un po’ di rammarico per qualche scelta narrativa non sempre ben ponderata, e per una location che - nonostante sia assai suggestiva - viene soffocata dalla linearità, e non riesce a comporre un racconto ambientale capace di invogliarci all’esplorazione. Chiudendo un occhio su alcune incertezze, quello alla scoperta del passato di Nicole e Rachel resta un viaggio che vale comunque la pena intraprendere.

En privilégiant une ambiance glaçante et une écriture subtile à la débauche de moyens pour susciter l'effroi, The Suicide of Rachel Foster évite la tentation de l'horreur classique. L'exploration, à pas sans doute trop feutrés, de l'hôtel Timberline nous invite à nous plonger dans les méandres de son passé et de celui de Nicole, dont les interactions avec son seul interlocuteur font mouche. Le titre aurait sans doute gagné à exploiter davantage ses possibilités de gameplay pour nous offrir une aventure plus terrifiante encore.

Uncovering the past has its ups and downs in The Suicide of Rachel Foster. While not a horror game, it only needed a slight nudge to become one and it would have been better for it. At least its roomy hotel setting is nice to explore, even if the world needed more detail and excitement.

With a lengthier campaign and better character development, The Suicide of Rachel Foster could’ve been an engrossing equivalent to first-person adventure-style mysteries prior. And while the main setting does boast an appealing-enough layout — a design that somehow manages to fuse a wide assortment of aesthetics and visual styles — the hurriedly-resolved story, as well as some frantic shifts in tone towards the closing parts, dampen what impact or effect they should’ve brought. Above all else, the game is not as thoughtful, or as provoking, to the theme of suicide and the ramifications of such as it claims to be. While it doesn’t offensively dispense with such weighted subject matter, the game’s mistaking complexity for sheer dramatics feels like desperation to what is, in actuality, a predictable and undeserved climax. Neat set design aside, The Suicide of Rachel Foster‘s middling, unremarkable progression (not to mention some odd characterization in parts) don’t quite gift the experience with the tension and unease it’s so obviously seeking.

Dans The Suicide of Rachel Foster, on ressent l’influence du septième art, ce qui n’est vraiment pas pour déplaire, mais aussi une certaine fragilité pour inscrire correctement cette influence dans une oeuvre vidéoludique, les mécaniques de jeu peu exploitées et les temps de chargements intrusifs en sont un exemple. De plus, on ne peut pas omettre les quelques soucis techniques qu’il possède. Cependant, le pari de nous vendre un jeu d’aventure/narratif à composante horrifique est dans une certaine mesure réussi, car la narration est originale et sympathique, et on ressent tout le soin apporté aux lieux, à un tel point qu’on a l’impression qu’un dialogue s’établit entre ceux-ci et la protagoniste Nicole.

The Suicide of Rachel Foster s'inspire des meilleurs à commencer par What Remains of Edith Finch, Gone Home, Firewatch, ou encore l'œuvre cinématographique de Stanley Kubrick, mais cela ne suffit pas pour offrir une expérience haletante de bout en bout. La nouvelle production de One-O-One Games n'offre pas assez de liberté au joueur pour qu'il puisse se sentir véritablement concerné par cette histoire sordide. Transformé en simple spectateur, ce dernier suit alors simplement cette enquête bien trop dirigiste sans vraiment en prendre part. Mais le pire dans tout cela réside bien entendu dans cette révélation finale qui peine à convaincre.

If you loved Gone Home or Firewatch, you’re better off just playing them again – Rachel Foster is a ghostly shadow of those classics.
