Immortals of Aveum is an impressively confident first-person shooter that successfully trades muzzles and magazines for mages and magic. Its fast-paced, spellcasting combat is both satisfying to master and spectacular to look at, and it features a lengthy and hearty campaign packed with secrets to keep us going well after the story has wrapped. As someone who desperately hopes that unapologetically single-player shooters will live forever, these Immortals have done a great job of making sure they’re definitely not dead yet.

Immortals of Aveum è la dimostrazione che delle valide meccaniche di gameplay, unite a una realizzazione generale tutto sommato discreta, possono dar vita a esperienze di gioco single player in grado di poter dire la propria in un mercato dominato da giochi live service e miriadi di proposte free-to-play. L’epopea di Jak nel regno di Aveum regala un piacevole intrattenimento grazie a un approccio libero e variegato a combattimenti quantomai stimolanti, proponendo al contempo momenti in cui emerge il lato più avventuroso e posato dello sparatutto di Ascendant Studios. Le piccole e grandi sbavature di carattere tecnico spezzano però l’idillio magico di un gameplay non certo originale ma indiscutibilmente efficace, a cui non basta neppure una componente ruolistica piuttosto articolata per coprire gli alti e bassi di un frame-rate poco stabile. Immortals of Aveum resta comunque una proposta più che valida nel campo degli sparattutto in prima persona single player, seppur non riesca a entrare nell’esclusivo club degli shooter da giocare almeno una volta nella vita.

Immortals of Aveum è uno sparatutto sorprendente, senz'altro diverso dal solito, caratterizzato da un'ambientazione molto peculiare e suggestiva, ben supportata da un comparto narrativo magari non originale ma capace di coinvolgere e appassionare con i suoi personaggi ben tratteggiati. Sulle prime un po' incerto, il gameplay prende piede rapidamente, catapultandoci all'interno di arene spietate e frenetiche; che da un certo punto in poi diventano forse troppo ostiche, suggerendoci di ripiegare e potenziare il personaggio sfruttando le possibilità di una struttura che però da questo punto di vista non viene minimamente approfondita. Visivamente si è cercato lo spettacolo e le ultime tecnologie, ma le console fanno fatica: scopriremo a breve se per una questione di mera ottimizzazione o di capacità hardware limitate.

Al netto di una serie di problemi tecnici che speriamo vivamente possano essere mitigati dalle prossime patch, Immortals of Aveum è un first-person magic shooter convincente, che si lascia giocare con trasporto dall’inizio alla fine. Pur appartenendo al genere degli sparatutto, il titolo Ascendant Studio è profondamente diverso dai suoi colleghi e la predominante componente action, unita alla presenza di tanti strumenti per contrastare gli avversari, rende ogni singolo scontro avvincente e spettacolare. La complessa lore alla base dell’esperienza accompagna un intreccio valido, non privo di qualche frangente meno efficace, ma capace talvolta di sorprendere il giocatore, e certamente in grado di spingerlo a ultimare il viaggio di Jak.

Pour un premier jeu à l'ambition AAA, Ascendant Studios livre une bonne surprise. On ressent sans effort le soin apporté à la mise en scène et au contexte de guerre qui fait, encore aujourd'hui, les belles heures heures de Call of Duty. L'histoire, sans être révolutionnaire, fait ce qu'on attend d'elle : proposer une justification solide au conflit qui a lieu dans Aveum. En bonus, elle peut divertir une certaine partie des joueurs sujet au sacarsmes et à l'humour potache. Enfin, Immortals of Aveum propose également des combats dynamiques et nerveux, comme sur un champ de bataille. Dommage que les zones vides, clairement épargnées par le conflit, les quelques longueurs en fin de partie et la lisibilité de certains affrontements viennent ternir le tableau. En tout état de cause, Ascendant Studio parvient à jeter des fondations solides dans le genre du FPS magique sans toutefois se hisser à la hauteur des plus grands. Tant mieux pour eux alors, puisqu'ils suivent donc le même chemin que leur maître.

Immortals of Aveum es un juego disfrutable, que quizás guste a cierto perfil de jugadores y a amantes del género de la acción. Durante nuestro análisis nos encontramos con problemas técnicos que se nos prometió subsanar con el parche día 1 y subsecuentes actualizaciones, pero también hay bajones gráficos en ciertos apartados del título. Divertido, pero tienes que saber a lo que vienes.

On ressort d’Immortals of Aveum avec un sentiment étrange. On a sincèrement accroché au gameplay : c’est nerveux, ça tire dans tous le sens et les possibilités sont XXL. L’histoire se laisse suivre avec quelques twists bien amenés. L’univers créé est attrayant, le lore tient la route et tout ce qu’on découvre coule de source quand on se pose en fin de voyage. De ce côté-là difficile d’attaquer Ascendant Studios qui a créé un monde riche et cohérent. Cela ne plaira peut-être pas à tout le monde, question de goûts, mais la qualité est bien là. Mais dès lors qu’on évoque le sujet chaud, le rendu et la technique, le débat est plus qu’ouvert et risque de faire grincer les dents de certains joueurs.

mmortals of Aveum is dus zoals gezegd geen slechte game, maar voelt op zoveel vlakken cliché of ondoordacht, dat we er ons te vaak aan hebben gestoord om er echt heel veel plezier aan te beleven. Dat is jammer, want we keken echt wel uit naar de eerste game van Ascendant Studios, maar meermaals werd duidelijk dat het echt wel hun eerste game is. We kunnen ons wel voorstellen dat heel wat gamers Immortals of Aveum tien tot wel twintig punten meer zullen geven na hun speelbeurt, want er zijn bepaalde aspecten die niet bij iedereen even hard zullen doorwegen.

Immortals of Aveum presents us with an interesting new fantasy universe in which magic replaces bullets, but in practice it doesn't quite hit the mark. Despite solid fundamental action, combat can quickly become difficult to read, devolving into a dizzying swirl of colourful effects. Solid presentation and performance lead to some visually arresting scenes, even if the story isn't particularly memorable. It's a good first effort from Ascendant Studios, and the potential is absolutely there, but there's a feeling that the team bit off a little more than it could chew.

Less a case of biting off more than it can chew, Immortals of Aveum instead serves up a mixed bag of notable creativity, dragged down by issues both narrative and technical alike. While future patches may go some way to iron out the uneven frame-rate and inconsistent visual quality, the same can’t be said for a brand of writing that’s at best tolerable and at worst, potentially off-putting. Minus one or two secondary characters you’d be happy to see stick around for longer, yet are sadly ditched in service of a plot with brief but ultimately unfulfilled promise. If nothing else, Ascendant Studios could’ve done a lot worse given the tone and the design intentions placed here. What’s left is a game that while doesn’t always put its best foot forward, eventually finds a way to loop back round to feeling curious as to what it has tucked away out of shot. Though it may trip over itself one too many times, Immortals of Aveum‘s rewarding level design, puzzle-solving and potential for custom builds still offers a sufficient amount to carry this “magic-shooter” pitch through to credits’ end.

Immortals of Aveum, de par son histoire, a un capital sympathie évident. Il est le jeu de toute une vie pour un développeur qui sait de quoi il parle, la raison d’être d’un tout nouveau studio, un AAA indépendant, qui n’en est pas vraiment un… Pour le joueur, c’est un FPS très nerveux qui sort des sentiers battus tout en proposant un feeling que l’on connait déjà. Le titre d’Ascend Studio fait passer un très bon moment si l’on met de côté ses problèmes techniques évidents qui le desservent malheureusement un peu. Mais le fait est qu’Immortals of Aveum propose beaucoup de choses à côté. Un univers riche à découvrir, tout un monde à explorer, des combats très nerveux bien qu'un peu chaotiques… Dommage que la technique ne suive pas toujours sur PS5, parce que l’on aurait ici un FPS magique plus que solide, alors qu'en l'état il manque cruellement de finition. Ce n’est pas un rendez-vous raté pour autant, juste un rencard qui aurait pu un peu mieux se passer, mais qu’on a quand même bien aimé.
