Will the never-ending onslaught of Neo Geo "classics" continue to appear, even next week and beyond? If we continue to get games like Burning Fight, I certainly hope not. The Neo Geo was home to far more playable and interesting adventures than this, and if we aren’t going to get to see more of them soon it’d be just as well for the VC’s regular Monday updates to go back to featuring just old NES and Turbo titles.

This is an example of a little bit of game going a long way. LOL doesn't do anything revolutionary for the DS or for party games in general, but it's a lot of fun and easy to use. If you and your friends crack each other up, you'll do the same with LOL. It's a shame it's relegated to a lonely website where it will surely be missed by most gamers. While it is a tad overpriced, its limited availability adds a certain cool factor all its own. IMHO LOL iz teh kewl.

As far as budget titles go, Cocoto Kart Racer is the cream of the crop. It could be described as a poor man's Mario Kart, emulating almost all of its features and clocking in at $30 less. Unfortunately, multiplayer, maybe the most important area for a kart racer, suffers from sloppy split screen integration. The loss in real estate significantly hinders your ability to race. Still, for twenty bucks you could do a lot worse. This is a good example of how budgetware doesn't need to be shovelware.

The main detractor to Unreal Tournament 3 on Xbox 360 is the total lack of customization options. Both the PC and PS3 versions allowed users to create their own maps and mutators using the Unreal Editor, but the same cannot be said here. Because of Microsoft-imposed restrictions on the sharing of user-created content, Unreal Tournament 3 lacks the incredible expandability of the other releases. Thankfully that doesn’t stop this latest Unreal Tournament 3 release from being well worth your time and money if you’re fan of either the genre or the series.

Over the past 30 years Taito’s been remaking and updating Space Invaders with wildly varied levels of successes and failures. Space Invaders Extreme is a certified hit and easily the company’s best effort in contemporizing its classic property. The game’s an absolute steal at 20 bucks on either the Nintendo DS or the PlayStation Portable, but if you want the definitive version of this fantastic classic revisit, the Nintendo DS version is it.

It's not that the Cake Mania series is bad, since it's a fairly fun casual game. It's fastpaced, and has a good style to it that has obviously gained a lot of appeal on the PC. The DS version is cramped and clunky though, making the game a little frustrating. Plus, this sequel is really more of an expansion pack, since it's basically the same thing as last time. Unless you've baked every cake possible in Cake Mania 1 and are jonesing to get back into the kitchen, you should pass on this second helping.

Chocobo's Dungeon may be a relic of the past, but it's one we should cherish. It takes a proven gameplay formula, skins it with the Final Fantasy universe, and throws as many different gameplay mechanics as it can at it. There's a great mix of gameplay styles here, from strategy to action to RPG. Square Enix's polished touch is all over this one, from the nice voice acting to the humorous dialogue. There's nothing here that couldn't be done on the GameCube, but it still captures your imagination and requires your thinking cap. If you consider yourself a longtime Square fan, you'll definitely want to delve into the dungeon.

Here's where I usually say something like "only appeals to the hardcore fan" or "diehards should rent it" -- that's not happening today. It's not that Hellboy's a broken game, it's just a boring, half-baked game that's trying to cash in on the movie. There's no challenge to it, there's no entertainment in it, and there's no soul to it. The gameplay is repetitive, the menus are bare, the extras aren't in HD, there's no replay value to it -- and I can go on. If you're the biggest Hellboy fan in the world, do not spend $60 on this game; if you're Ron Perlman, do not play the free copy I hope they sent you; and if you're Hellboy, seek vengeance on the people who did this to you.

If you like RTS games but don’t feel the need to go all out for a full-priced C&C experience, Kane’s Wrath might be just the ticket. The controls are much improved over the full version, and it stands alone as a chunk of well-presented content with most of the bells and whistles. If it’s story you’re after, though, look elsewhere. The live-action video sequences have worn out their welcome, and the plot is almost nonexistent here, unless you’re a hardcore fan of the series. But on the whole, Command & Conquer 3: Kane’s Wrath is a good value, if nothing especially exciting.

Supreme Ruler 2020 is designed for a very specific kind of gamer. We can fault the designers somewhat for not making the immense complexity of this game a bit more digestible but the fact is that the tremendous amount of detail and control here can't ever be presented in a format that will make it palatable to the average gamer. As it is, it will take hardcore fans a good couple of hours to finally start to feel like they're in control of what's happening to them in this game. In the meantime they can rely on the tremendously helpful minister system to keep their country on course.

It's tough to get excited about Guitar Hero: Aerosmith. It's essentially a re-release of Guitar Hero III with a new song list and some new avatars. The fact that Guitar Hero III still has downloadable songs being released for it tempers any excitement new tracks might bring. Still, it is Guitar Hero and the formula can deliver a lot of fun. The game is easier than any before it, which makes it a nice choice for anybody looking to jump in and try out a Guitar Hero game for the first time. Just double check your status in the Aerosmith fan club before running out to buy this one.

Heavenly Guardian is an affront to everything that games are now and were back in the day. It can be held up as a brazen defiance of the march of technology, a testament to when games were simple but fun (and despite all my bitching, Heavenly Guardian is still fun... to a degree). It's also a painfully generic, downright pitiful display of what 2D gaming can still offer. I don't mind old-school games, though I do feel that nostalgia often tints our perspective on really old titles until we see them with modern eyes, but that isn't the case here. I wanted a spiritual successor to Pocky & Rocky -- even if the name wasn't there. Instead, I got a game apparently transplanted from the early 90s that was stripped of its soul during the trip. There's no heart to what's happening, only a tired series of canned patterns and lifeless trudges through wintery wastes. This is not the 16-bit throwback you're looking for.
