Hand of Fate 2 has stellar writing, fun deck building, and interesting stories. What it doesn’t have, however, is good combat. While I have grown to find the combat manageable, it should be fun and exciting. It stands as an odd blemish that has been carried over from the original while everything else as been prettied up. Still, I recommend giving Hand of Fate 2 a chance, especially if you never played the original. Even with the lackluster combat there is plenty to enjoy here.

Candle ist ein hübscher handgemalter Puzzle-Plattformer, dessen Spielwelt vor allem durch die vielen gut integrierten Rätsel belebt wird. Auch wenn die Geschichte eines Stamms, dessen Schamanen-Anführer entführt wurde, nicht viel Tiefe bietet, sondern eher einen atmosphärischen Rahmenliefert, macht es Spaß, sich an den verschiedenen Hintergründen und Bewohnern des Dschungels und den alten Tempeln zu erfreuen. Die Rätsel sind abwechslungsreich und bis auf die manchmal etwas hakligen Sprünge und Backtracking-Passagen, hat mich Candle über viele Stunden gut unterhalten.

Tempest 4000 is the final Llamasoft Tempest and an incredibly strong game to go out on. The years of experience with the series are on full display in everything from the flow of the levels, speed of introducing new enemies while mixing in the familiar ones, web design and even the spikes in difficulty followed by a short break before ramping back up again. It combines difficulty with accessibility, giving plenty of challenge for seasoned players while being forgiving enough for new ones, and even when the intensity ramps up to be a little overwhelming, the music and lights make it worth pushing on. When the bullets are flying as you manage the crowd working its way up the screen, trimming back the horde over there while timing a power-ups trip up the web over there, zipping over just in time to grab it before heading back to thin out the next set of enemy rushes spawning on different parts of the web, it all feels like you’re conducting a techno-light show made of bullets, vectors and multitasking precision. Tempest 4000 is a fantastic conclusion to Llamasoft’s work on the games and easily holds its place amidst the classics of Atari’s flagship arcade series.

In definitiva, sembrerà strano agli occhi nostalgici dei puristi, ma Sonic Mania Plus è riuscito ad avvicinarsi ai mostri sacri del franchise e a fronteggiarli con la giusta tenacia. Il titolo di Christian e amici è semplicemente il mix perfetto di avventure da poter affrontare in un titolo della saga, e il fatto che sia stato proprio un appassionato della saga a costruire un’esperienza del genere è un atto più unico che raro. Per chi non ha ancora avuto modo di vivere la Mania del Sonic Team, l’acquisto di Plus è praticamente obbligato. Per gli altri, il consiglio va invece rivolto al DLC Bis disponibile sugli store, che al costo di 5 euro vi fornirà tutti i contenuti aggiuntivi della nuova versione. Strano a dirsi, ma Sonic è finalmente tornato; stavolta nella sua versione più romanticamente classica.

Octopath Traveler is a charming throwback to classic Japanese Role-Playing Games. It’s brimming with life aesthetically and the turn-based combat system is old school yet surprisingly modern. There’s a wide open world to explore with eight fascinating and unique characters to play as, and a musical score that will knock your socks off. It feels old yet new at the same time, which seems difficult to accomplish this day and age. While it deserves all of this praise and more, it’s still far from the most flawless of gems. Due to the characters having their own tales, ranging from happy-go-lucky adventuring to murderous revenge, the campaign fails to produce a meaningful narrative, instead segmented into portions where there’s little to no reason for the cast to be together. They’re just there. That’s not to mention the dungeons are some of the shortest, most uninspiring areas you’ll find in any RPG, going well beyond the issues of something like the recent Tales games. At least there’s plenty to find in the world, many offering fantastical riches and challenging boss encounters. Regardless, while there are problems with the structure and overall narrative, there’s no denying that Octopath Traveler is an alluring adventure and one of the better RPGs on the Nintendo Switch.

Al netto di qualche mancanza, come il multiplayer online, il lavoro di Resonair fatto con questa rimasterizzazione non può che essere premiato. Lumines Remastered si pone come un prodotto time consuming vecchia scuola, capace di tenere incollato il giocatore per ore e ore, ghermendolo con il suo stile inconfondibile. Il feeling rimane quello di sempre per la vecchia guardia mentre, chi non ha mai avuto modo di provare l'opera di Tetsuya Mizucughi non può assolutamente farsi sfuggire questa ennesima perla videoludica. Abbiamo testato la versione Nintendo Switch e ci siamo trovati a giocarlo in ogni momento libero, anche (e soprattutto) fuori casa. Insomma, Lumines Remastered per Nintendo Switch non è solo un prodotto solido: è proprio la versione più indicata per il periodo estivo.

Come la sua mascotte, Taiko no Tatsujin per Nintendo Switch è allegro, colorato e divertente. Tra tutti i capitoli per console, questo è senza dubbio quello più versatile e che meglio si adatta ai gusti di ciascun appassionato: che preferiate picchiettare sul touchscreen, usare i tasti, agitare i Joy-Con o battere sul tamburo, questo episodio di Taiko no Tatsujin ha una configurazione per tutti. Eppure la tracklist per il momento non brilla, i Joy-Con ogni tanto fanno le bizze, il supporto al touchscreen è solo parziale e il tatacon realizzato da Hori è ancora lontano dalla sensibilità del cabinato originale. Taiko no Tatsujin su Switch resta estremamente consigliato ai fan dei rhythm game giapponesi, ma l'impressione è che per essere la migliore conversione casalinga gli manchino ancora un paio di patch e qualche DLC.

Un'esperienza piacevole per i fan giovanissimi di Finn & Jake, protagonisti di Adventure Time, che troveranno ne I Pirati dell'Enchiridion un'avventura fedele alla serie di Cartoon Network, con un gameplay semplice ma tutto sommato abbastanza variegato. Peccato per l'assenza di una maggiore profondità nella componente ruolistica e di un comparto tecnico non all'altezza della produzione originale, elementi che avrebbero reso Adventure Time: I Pirati dell'Enchiridion più interessante anche per un pubblico non proprio giovanissimo.

Una bella sorpresa questo The Persistence, survival-horror in VR con elementi stealth, esplorativi e roguelike che convince sia nell’approccio alla realtà virtuale (tre sistemi di movimento, interazione naturale con l’ambiente), sia nel mix di generi e nella libertà lasciata al giocatore di agire come meglio crede. È poi vero che non c’è nulla di nuovo o di originale a livello di atmosfera (che comunque funziona) e ambientazioni, ma averne di produzioni per PlayStation VR di questo livello e anche l’elemento roguelike, che solitamente può spaventare, qui è sufficientemente sfumato da renderlo ben accetto anche ai meno patiti del genere.

Mostrando una piena consapevolezza delle capacità immersive della realtà virtuale, il team Firesprite realizza un roguelike che sfrutta al meglio le caratteristiche del visore di Sony. The Persistence è un'altra conquista qualitativa nel catalogo di PSVR, un titolo sì imperfetto e privo di grande inventiva, eppure al contempo indubbiamente affascinante, rigoroso e soddisfacente sul piano del gameplay e dell'atmosfera. Un'avventura horror non certo rivoluzionaria né indimenticabile, ma capace di “persistere” per qualche ora all'interno delle nostre console con una buona dose di personalità.
