Double Dragon Gaiden focuses on replayability to its detriment. Solid combat mechanics give way to balance considerations made to justify all of the difficulty sliders and upgrade systems. If I had to pick between a game with a lot of “replayability” versus a game I simply like to play, the latter will win out every time. Double Dragon Gaiden isn’t far off from being enjoyable on the merits of the gameplay alone, but it’s far enough to consider going back to the dojo and polishing its Sou-Setsu-Ken technique.

Disney Illusion Island avait tout pour être un titre immanquable de l'été. L'exploitation de la bande de Mickey est à la fois une porte ouverte pour les plus jeunes mais également une madeleine de Proust des plus anciens, nostalgiques des jeux de plateforme de l'ère SNES/Megadrive. Le choix de l'esthétique de la série bien plus absurde et loufoque de Mickey promettait ce brin de folie qui pouvait de plus créer un véritable must have familial. Malheureusement, le titre ne parviendra qu'à vous décrocher qu'un ou deux sourires tout au plus. Finalement, Illusion Island est très anecdotique et ne parvient pas à se hisser à la hauteur d'autres titres du genre. A moins de ne vouloir consommer que des produits Disney, nous ne pouvons que vous conseiller d'acquérir d'autres jeux Metroidvania plus anciens à la place de celui-ci.

Tour de France 2023 è una creatura particolare nel mondo delle simulazioni sportive perché le sue componenti singole traballano ma il loro insieme è solido, divertente e riesce a ricreare molto bene sia le emozioni di gara sia le tante piccole decisioni da prendere. I tutorial del gioco sono intuitivi, ben fatti e riescono a introdurre anche un novizio al mondo del ciclismo professionista. Diversi aspetti non vengono approfonditi e devono essere retro-ingegnerizzati giocando, e questo può dare fastidio, ma nel complesso la curva di apprendimento iniziale è molto gentile e adatta a tutti. Chi vorrà buttarsi a capofitto in questo gioco avrà molto di cui essere contento tra tappe, stage, squadre, biciclette e componentistica ma, una volta raggiunta la vetta del mondo del ciclismo giocando contro l'intelligenza artificiale, non resta molto da fare se non provare a battere il miglior tempo degli avversari online. Se amate il ciclismo questo gioco vi farà contenti, mentre chi è alla ricerca di un punto di ingresso a questo mondo troverà in Tour de France 2023 un pozzo di conoscenza capace di spiegare (quasi) tutto quello che c'è da sapere.

Koa and the Five Pirates of Mara is a very cutesy platforming game that does it’s job surprisingly well. The “speed tech” taught is simple but effective and the variety of level types was a pleasant surprise. The art style and the story are nothing to write home about and certainly won’t appeal to all but platforming fans who admire gameplay are encouraged to give the pirates a run for their money. It doesn’t really overstay it’s welcome (underwater levels aside) and the levels feel bite-sized which was nice. A fun game to just pick up and play for bits at a time.

Koa and the Five Pirates of Mara Koa and the Five Pirates of Mara riesce a centrare i suoi obiettivi dichiarati: offrire un'esperienza platform rilassante ed alla portata di tutte le abilità, dai più piccoli agli amanti delle speedrun. Nonostante questo, è bene essere consapevoli dei limiti della produzione: il level design è piuttosto ordinario, la telecamera soffre di lapsus preoccupanti e la difficoltà generale è tarata verso il basso. Con questa piena consapevolezza di pregi e limiti, l'avventura piratesca di Koa e Napopo può essere un simpatico passatempo nelle calde giornate estive. Patti chiari e amicizia molto lunga: Disney Illusion Island è un gioco di piattaforme avventuroso, che riprende l’idea generale dei metroidvania, annacquandola quanto basta per renderla adatta a un pubblico giovane o inesperto. Chi ha già dimestichezza, troverà poco pane in cui affondare i denti. Chi invece muove i primi passi e ha qualche amico o famigliare con cui giocare, si divertirà un bel po’. Però relegare Topolino, Minni, Paperino e Pippo a dimensioni lillipuziane è davvero un peccato capitale e la banalità delle ambientazioni non migliora la situazione.

The Expanse: A Telltale Series is a short, unexciting, and slow narrative adventure, full of unlikable characters and repetitive gameplay. Despite a great performance from Cara Gee as Drummer and a few engaging player choices, it is a waste of space.

An affectionately crafted prequel to The Expanse which, while worthwhile for fans, fails to evolve Telltale’s tired gameplay design in any meaningful manner.

It is very easy to have a good time playing a few runs of Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons roguelike gauntlet of four levels and bosses. Jumping in and learning its satisfyingly punchy combat and long list of fun and unique playable characters that you can tag in for combos turns a somewhat shallow pond of an early game experience into an impressive lake of collaborative combat options. But things got a little too repetitive and frustrating before I even got my first clear thanks to the shallow enemy pool, few game-changing upgrades, a brutal difficulty spike if you choose to save the wrong boss for last, and lack of worthwhile unlockables to chase outside of new fighters.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is an amazing game, looking and running even better on PC. However, this version does come with caveats and even some downgrades such as crashing and slightly different weapon functionality. PS5 is still the best way to play, but for those who adore the series like me it’s well worth double dipping.
