Il viaggio di Stan negli abissi del mare e della sua psiche si inserisce in una lunga serie di videogiochi dedicati all'elaborazione del lutto, ma non riesce a dare un contributo realmente significativo. Con un messaggio annacquato da meccaniche del tutto evitabili in un contesto che vorrebbe mettere al centro la psiche di un uomo tormentato e un inserimento talvolta forzato di nude informazioni legate al (pur interessante e lodevole) tema dell'ambientalismo, Under The Waves è un prodotto che soffre per una evidente mancanza di focus, oltre che per l'inserimento di elementi tratti dai videogiochi open world, con la probabile finalità di accendere l'interesse di un pubblico avvezzo a questo genere e traghettarlo nelle profondità del Mare del Nord. Purtroppo, però, queste scelte portano confusione e una spiacevole sensazione di infelice mescolanza in un prodotto che fatica a trovare una propria identità.

Sea of Stars may pinch its influences from numerous 16-bit titles like Chrono Trigger, but the gameplay feels neither stale or old. The gorgeous 2D environments and bizarre cosmic-esque plot will hold players' attention for the whole 35-40-hour runtime.

Drawing heavily from classic RPGs of past console generations, Sea of Stars creates an exciting new adventure that’s also a worthy tribute to the classics. It proudly flaunts its influences but does so in a way that pays homage to them. The original story and characters are entertaining and engrossing enough to keep the roughly thirty hour playthrough enjoyable. The story does rely on genre tropes at times which leads to predictable moments, but given the nature of this type of game, that’s to be expected. Sea of Stars doesn’t break any real innovative ground, but does a great job of combining so many elements of older games into a modern take on the classic formula. As such, it’s a title that should be enjoyed by any fan of classic turn-based RPGs.

Sea of Stars shows modern RPGs how it's done in this incredible throwback to SNES classics. It’s an absolute joy to play from start to finish, though the story, writing, and flat characters leave some potential untapped. Even so, this is a gorgeous adventure that you won’t want to miss.

While a multitude of titles have paid homage to SNES-era role-playing times, Sea of Stars is one of the few efforts that truly understands what makes the source material so beloved. Charmingly wholesome and aesthetically adept, Sabotage Studio’s follow-up to The Messenger will keep you beguiled through its blissful 30- (or so) hour campaign.

Goodbye Volcano High hits a few promising notes, pun intended, with its good musical numbers, decent dialogue and nice art. However, notable issues and inconsistencies with the main story plus a few minor technical quirks keep this fantasy tale from reaching its full potential.

Goodbye Volcano High è una storia di affermazione personale, amicizia e amore e di come tutte queste cose, già grandi se prese singolarmente, diventino dei colossi quando si mischiano assieme. Nonostante la premessa iniziale dell’ambientazione possa sembrare bizzarra, la qualità della scrittura e delle interpretazioni dei doppiatori (Lachlan Watson nel ruolo di Fang su tutti) annullano qualsiasi distanza tra il giocatore e i personaggi fin dalle primissime battute. Aiutata da meccaniche di gioco molto intelligenti, la storia progredisce con forza affermando l’identità dei suoi protagonisti pur permettendo al giocatore di metterci il proprio zampino, mentre la colonna sonora (che è finita dritta dritta tra i miei preferiti in loop) è ben più di un accompagnamento: è una co-protagonista, che racchiude in sé ansie, paure e sogni di questa sgangherata combriccola di amici, alle prese nientemeno che con l’apocalisse.

Trine 5: A Clockwork Conspiracy is an awesome sequel that keeps the good times rolling for one of the best co-op puzzle-platformer series out there. This set of puzzles are some of the strongest they’ve ever been, and boss fights are creative and original – even if those highlights are occasionally cut short with snooze-inducing combat sections and a predictable story. It may not do much to innovate beyond what we’ve done four times before, but Trine 5 plays to its strengths extremely well and makes some important tweaks here and there that definitely make it worthy of a playthrough or two.

Il più grosso limite dell'ultima opera dei ragazzi finlandesi di Frozenbyte è un effetto collaterale della scelta di coccolarsi nella loro comfort zone. Speriamo che con la prossima iterazione possa arrivare la vera rivoluzione per il brand, dato che in questa veste ha ormai detto tutto. In maniera ottima, è vero, ma ha detto tutto.
