If you're in the mood for a Japanese role playing game and you've played all of the good ones then you can rest assured that this one is fine. It's okay. It's comfort food. You know that feeling when you just wish Netflix would make another season of Mindhunter and so you end up watching Criminal Minds? That. Only in space.

Saturnalia è una produzione horror procedurale davvero non comune, che miscela con coerenza e concretezza investigazione e tensione a elementi tipici dei roguelite. Il villaggio di Gravoi ricreato a ogni nuova partita o semplicemente in caso di game over è capace di donare sensazioni sempre nuove. Si tratta certamente di un’avventura impegnativa, che però non scade mai nello scorrere a fiumi del sangue, preferendo viceversa una narrazione e una direzione artistica di ottimo livello. Santa Ragione racconta la Sardegna e un folklore tipicamente italiano fedelmente riprodotto all’interno di un’esperienza di pregio, che oltretutto presenta una discreta longevità. Titolo adatto a tutti gli utenti in cerca di un gioco dalle tinte noir e riflessivo allo stesso tempo.

Saturnalia Saturnalia dimostra l'ambizione ed il talento del team di sviluppo italiano Santa Ragione. Un survival horror di stampo classico che sposa meccaniche roguelite, all'interno di un'avventura investigativa affascinante, calata nella tradizione e nel folklore sardo. Una produzione incredibilmente ricercata, graziata da tematiche suggestive ed una direzione artistica entusiasmante. Mancano alcune rifiniture al gameplay, così come una maggiore attenzione al lato tecnico ed all'intelligenza artificiale. Difetti tuttavia marginali che nulla tolgono ad un'esperienza carica di una fortissima personalità. Square-Enix y el estudio tri-Ace, el mismo que dio vida al Star Ocean original de Super Famicom, recuperan la serie de rol de temática espacia… pero a medio gas. El hecho de no llegar traducido a nuestro idioma es un indicativo claro de lo que los desarrolladores esperan de él en cuanto a su rendimiento comercial, siendo un título de presupuesto menor que está anclado en el pasado. Sin embargo, la inclusión del robot DUMA aporta bastante interés a los enfrentamientos y, también, a la exploración, dado que atacar a los rivales desde las alturas y explorar los fondos volando y planeando resulta bastante gratificante. Una aventura que tiene un arranque muy flojo pero que va mejorando a medida que transcurren las horas. ¿Hasta qué punto? Eso depende de cuánto os gusten los JRPGs clásicos.

Avercene di opere come Signalis, viene da pensare. Non tanto perché abbia le stigmate del gioco perfetto, del resto alcuni limiti in parte fisiologici dimostrano che non lo è. No, mi riferisco alla marcata personalità di cui è saturo questo tributo tutto anima, cuore e nobile pixel art all’horror inteso in senso trasversale. L’angosciante discesa nell'abisso di Elster prende, sottrae e rivisita da medium e artisti diversi abilmente, dando vita a un appassionato omaggio a un genere affascinante ma terribilmente difficile da maneggiare con cura a causa della vitale necessità di giocare impeccabilmente con le emozioni forti. La ricercata produzione di Yuri e Barbara merita l’iscrizione all’albo dei survival horror d'autore, quelli che rinunciano allo spavento pop per puntare sul turbamento emotivo perpetuo causato da un'atmosfera opprimente a livello psicofisico, da enigmi coerenti con l'ambientazione la cui soluzione si cela in un testo o in una frequenza, dalla difficoltosa gestione delle risorse, dal contesto distopico convincente e, dulcis in fundo, da un racconto in grado di rimanere addosso al giocatore anche dopo i titoli di coda.

"Meh". C'est l'impression générale que laissera ce titre. Certes, bourré d'humour et riche en situations, lieux et personnages. Une aventure généreuse comme on les aime, pleine d'énigmes plus ou moins tordues et bien souvent satisfaisantes. Mais avec la désagréable impression que Terrible Toybox nous sert du fan-service sur le fond en oubliant en partie les non-initiés. Et surtout, en se moquant des joueurs sur la forme pour ce portage Switch. L'interface est à la limite de l'acceptable, comme si tout ce qui avait été créé en point & click sur ce support n'existait pas. Return to Monkey Island et son univers stupide effleurent du doigt le statut du titre idéal pour amuser le plus grand nombre et redéfinir les bases d'un style que la série a contribué à bâtir, proposant même l'idée d'une aventure vécue par Guybrush Junior, abandonné trop rapidement. Mais à la manière du chapitre d'intro où Papy Guybrush prend son fiston sur les genoux pour lui raconter comme c'était mieux la vie d'avant, le jeu impose la même vision à ses joueurs. Déso Papy Guybrush, on t'a pas attendu pour évoluer sans toi.

Star Ocean The Divine Force è una lunga, profonda, validissima avventura nello spazio profondo. Offre ore ed ore di gioco, e sicuramente rappresenta il validissimo, nuovo titolo del franchise in questione. I protagonisti sono ben caratterizzati e sufficientemente profondi, la storia interessante sia dal punto di vista generale che nelle varie sfumature, i comprimari solidi e “sensati” anche dal punto di vista del gameplay. Qualunque cultore di action-RPG e action-JRPG avrà davvero poco di cui lamentarsi, e anzi apprezzerà il complicatissimo e meticolosissimo sistema di combattimento che sì, d’accordo, a volte sembra un tantino troppo legato al passato e poco innovativo – del resto, se una cosa funziona, dobbiamo stravolgerla per forza? – ma poi arriva il supporto di D.U.M.A. ad arricchire sia le fasi esplorative che quelle degli scontri con nemici occasionali e veri e propri boss. Complessivamente non tutto è perfetto, soprattutto sul versante tecnico, e vari aspetti potevano essere raffinati ulteriormente; ma ci troviamo alle prese con un’avventura mastodontica e memorabile. Questo, ogni tanto, dovrebbe pur bastare.

Star Ocean: The Divine Force feels drained of life. It has a strong, highly-customizable combat system along with a solid soundtrack, but there’s not much praise to speak of outside of that. The two hero option is a fun gimmick we haven’t seen since The Second Story, only observing one perspective of the story at a time, but the problem is that there are so few compelling characters. The cast and story is one of The Divine Force’s biggest downfalls, not to mention severely-fluctuating presentation values. Laeticia and Raymond are some of the stalest protagonists, lacking emotion and charm. There are also bizarre design choices that ruin the flow of progression, such as accessories being removed every time a party member is temporarily removed (which happens all the time) or not being able to interact with menus, maps or the world when there’s the frequent unskippable fluff dialogue whilst traversing. That’s not mentioning the boring dungeon designs, although the traversal in the open areas itself is at least fast and enjoyable. I couldn’t be more disappointed in how Star Ocean: The Divine Force turned out, to the point I’d rather go back and replay tri-Ace’s Infinite Undiscovery. You can take solace that The Divine Force is at least better than Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness as there are moments of intrigue, but they’re overshadowed by how severely underwhelming the overall package ended up.

Even with some issues here and there, Star Ocean: The Divine Force is undoubtedly a return to form for the series by tri-Ace. The game delivers a solid JRPG experience that both fans of the series and newcomers will enjoy thanks to the best battle system in the series to date, likable characters, and an engaging but a little slow and not particularly surprising story. Some technical issues and by-the-books game design do take something away from the experience, but for those looking for a traditional Japanese role-playing game with plenty of heart, Star Ocean: The Divine Force is the game to get.
