Soul Hackers 2 is, at its heart, a streamlined Atlus JRPG, serving as a great entry point for anyone new to the genre or the developer in general. The combat and dungeon delving are entertaining, if fairly familiar, and the charming cast of characters kept me interested all the way through its roughly 60-hour campaign. But a disappointing lack of creativity in its battle systems and a fairly shallow overarching story mean this newly resurrected series will need to do more if it wants to set itself apart amongst Atlus’ best.

Soul Hacker 2 does a really good job crafting an enjoyable high stakes story and populating it with realized characters. Combat has been left mostly unchanged, which is for the better, but there's a lot to be desired in the copy-paste treatment of the large Soul Matrix dungeon.

The point-and-click genre has been deprived of innovation for years, and while it doesn’t need to change all that much, Cowcat has successfully mixed two gameplay styles that wouldn’t normally fit together. The result is a love letter to my childhood and a truly unique adventure game experience that fans of the genre should not miss.

Destroy All Humans! 2: Reprobed does a fine job of updating the 2006 original to look like a modern game, but that game was a fairly unambitious sequel that didn’t do much to evolve its gameplay. And while I’d be fine with a somewhat repetitive story that breaks up its missions with comedy, this is some solid C+ material that only occasionally lands a chuckle – and more often some serious cringes. Split-screen co-op makes it more enjoyable to blast through and combat does eventually get tougher when bulkier enemies join the fray, but by and large it’s more of the same B-movie sci-fi homage without a lot of brain-popping new ideas.

Whilst the updated visuals and much improved control scheme are welcome touches, the cracks start to show quickly as it doesn’t do anything to improve on the PS2 original’s gameplay. However, this is still an easy one to recommend if you fancy something simple, but fun.

Like many of the B-movies that inspired it, Destroy All Humans! 2 – Reprobed isn’t something that will be considered great by a general consensus, but does have a certain appeal to the right audience. The game makes many attempts at subtle and not-so-subtle innuendos and while the intention is humor, many of them fall flat. Not because they’re offensive, they just mostly go for the low hanging fruit which may have been more risque in 2006, but nowadays just doesn’t seem that creative. There are sections of enjoyable gameplay, but these moments come as part of a greater narrative that’s difficult to care about. Fans of low-budget sci-fi are clearly the target audience, and for those this will probably be a good time, but there are better options available for the rest of us.

Derrière ses néons colorés, Soul Hackers 2 reste un jeu de rôle "à l'ancienne" qui s'éloigne des titres plus récents de sa franchise comme Persona 5 Royal ou Shin Megami Tensei V. Au-delà de son esthétique anime cyberpunk, le jeu d'Atlus se repose sur un système de combat à la SMT toujours efficace et qui a fait ses preuves, mais aussi sur son sympathique casting de personnages qui se démarquent par leurs designs originaux. Malheureusement, l'expérience est desservie par une histoire finalement assez simple, quelques lacunes techniques, mais surtout par ses donjons beaucoup trop basiques et répétitifs qui peinent à stimuler le joueur. Un titre qui a de quoi plaire aux amateurs de jeu de rôle avertis donc.
