Wonder Boy: Asha in Monster World est un cas d’école. Derrière la refonte graphique satisfaisante se cache un jeu qui n’est pas inintéressant mais qui aurait pu bénéficier à l’occasion de la conception de son remake de modifications sur le fond pour atténuer quelques défauts. Les développeurs ont choisi au contraire de se cantonner à la reproduction la plus fidèle possible de l’expérience d’origine, avec ce que cela comporte de bon comme de mauvais. Il en ressort une expérience valable mais pas mémorable, courte, qui donne l’impression de ne jamais aller au bout de ses ambitions. 31 ans plus tard, cette mauvaise habitude se confirme.

Wheel World riproduce perfettamente la sensazione gioiosa di pedalare con il vento sul viso e tra i capelli. Se da un certo punto di vista la decisione di puntare su un contesto più rilassato e di largo respiro ha trasformato il gioco in uno splendido simulatore di passeggiate in bicicletta, punteggiate da gare mai troppo impegnative, dall'altro ci è sembrato che narrativa e progressione siano state messe in secondo piano. La storia resta una buffa vicenda sullo sfondo, e il sistema che permette di ottenere nuove parti per la bici diventa via via meno centrale per via di una sfida tarata verso il basso e di alcuni componenti che, una volta ottenuti, rendono il nostro mezzo quasi imbattibile. Resta una piacevolissima esperienza di circa 5 ore, accompagnata tra l'altro da una colonna sonora synth pop di grande qualità.

Super Mario Jamboree approda su Nintendo Switch 2 nella sua versione definitiva: migliore sotto il profilo tecnico e ludico, il gioco base è arricchito dalla sua controparte televisiva, ovvero un insieme di minigiochi più spiccatamente di movimento in cui far confluire la nuova offerta tecnologica di Switch 2. Più quantità, a fronte di una qualità sempre elevata grazie a un Jamboree che meno di un anno fa si è imposto come un grande episodio, un ritorno in pompa magna della saga datata 1998. Se l'obiettivo di Jamboree TV è quello di vendere le telecamere, Nintendo ha scelto l'esponente ideale: la capacità di coinvolgere così attivamente il giocatore in un party game colorato e divertente è unica e passa solo attraverso la cattura video della stanza e dei giocatori. Funziona, si creano veramente dei momenti esilaranti, il microfono e il mouse completano il quadro delle novità permettendo l'esecuzione di minigiochi pensati correttamente, mai troppo difficili e perfetti per integrare fasce di non giocatori, o giocatori occasionali. Che poi, in fondo, è sempre stato l'obiettivo di Mario Party: far giocare anche chi i videogiochi li gioca molto poco.

Super Mario Party Jamboree - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV gives an already fantastic party game a huge shot in the arm, with a bunch of brilliant Mouse Mode and mic-based games that also allow you to see your big silly face as you play. It's all very knockabout, very easy to use, and very easy to enjoy.

Entre Lies of P, Black Myth : Wukong et, maintenant, Wuchang : Fallen Feathers, les studios de développement asiatiques secouent le genre du Souls-like, bien qu’ils aient pris le train en cours de route. Énième itération d’un genre à part entière qu’on ne présente plus, la création de Leenzee trouve l’équilibre parfait entre un Souls-like qui revient au source et un jeu dont le genre doit se réinventer sous peine de lasser. Au bout du compte, l’expérience promise par Wuchang : Fallen Feathers est honnête, robuste et sincèrement divertissante, à défaut d’amener une révolution. C’est dommage car il ne manque pas grand-chose à ses très bonnes idées pour en faire un fleuron du genre !

Shadow Labyrinth starts strong by doubling down on the weirdest pivot an old and beloved video game character has ever made, but 30ish hours later, I struggle to find any element of this metroidvania that wasn't done better somewhere else years ago. The MAZEs, where it’s ironically the most like its cardinal inspiration, are rad re-imaginings of the original Pac-Man formula that could make a decent game all by themselves. Everything else, from the exploration made tedious by a lack of direction and annoying checkpointing to the one-note combat that adds very little nuance outside of mashing and bashing, makes playing Shadow Labyrinth a largely dull experience. Sitting through the dialogue and sorting through this story were my greatest challenges, as my brain wandered its seemingly endless maze of lore chasing the ghosts of the intense, affecting promise teased by the Secret Level short this unexpected adaptation is based on.

Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate isn’t the worst expansion the looter shooter’s been given, but it’s a major step back from The Final Shape in almost every regard, mixing content that’s simply more of the same with a few experiments here and there that don’t always work out. I quite enjoyed the surprising new direction of the story, though it’s definitely a bit of a slog getting through the campaign to see it all, and a so-so raid doesn’t do much to salvage it. The new abilities on Kepler are at least interesting ideas, but the forgettable and claustrophobic areas don’t offer many reasons to stick around. The changes to endgame progression are the real poison pill though, which turn an already grindy game into an absurdly repetitive death march into the bowels of Destiny hell that is sure to put even the loyalty of hardcore players like me to the test. There are worse ways to spend your time than playing The Edge of Fate, but you don’t have to look very hard to find better ones.

Wuchang: Fallen Feathers no esconde sus cartas en ningún momento. Es una clara inspiración a la era dorada de FromSoftware que tanto echamos de menos algunos, y aunque tropieza en detalles que pueden frustrar, como esa torpe recuperación en el suelo o algún jefe cuestionable, el resto es magnífico, con un núcleo jugable sólido y visualmente muy atractivo. Propone una exploración que engancha y un combate con ideas propias que termina convenciendo. No viene a revolucionar nada, ni lo pretende, pero si buscas un soulslike como antaño, sin online ni mundos abiertos, exigente y hermoso… si solo vas a jugar a un título del género este año, que sea Wuchang.

Wuchang: Fallen Feathers è un titolo dal cozzo facile, soprattutto all'inizio, ma che piano piano si apre al giocatore e lo accompagna a capirne le logiche al punto da renderlo un buon prodotto al netto dei tanti spigoli grezzi che presenta. I difetti non diventano magicamente pregi, a mano a mano che si gioca e lo si apprezza, ma ci sono delle innegabili qualità che lo rendono un'esperienza piacevole e gratificante, aperta a diverse sperimentazioni sebbene la schivata rappresenti il nucleo del gameplay e dell'approccio agli scontri. Convince solo in parte, complici diverse asperità e ingenuità che lo portano a essere un soulslike "vecchio", ma quello che ingrana lo fa bene e lo eleva, anche se di misura, dall'abisso della mediocrità dove avrebbe potuto sprofondare. Alcuni potrebbero definirlo un "guilty pleasure" e, in fondo, non ci vedo niente di male.
