S'inspirer de Myst ou de Outer Wilds est une chose, le faire en créant une alchimie qui permet à Blue Prince d'être l'égal de ces deux jeux, de leur réputation, en est une autre. Il faut cependant bien maitriser l'anglais du fait des nombreux puzzles littéraires, mais plus qu'un frein, c'est une motivation à s'améliorer dictionnaire en main pour percer tous les mystères. On plonge ainsi dans une histoire captivante où l'on se sent véritablement comme un détective, les énigmes jouant plus sur la saveur que la difficulté, idéalement dosée. Blue Prince est instantanément un classique du genre et vous allez vous régaler à dérouler son scénario, une victoire intellectuelle après l'autre.

Pour peu qu'on ne se lasse pas d'un système de combat qui peine à se renouveler au bout de quelques heures, South of Midnight est un titre très agréable à parcourir. Entre des décors imprégnés de la culture cajun et des thèmes musicaux capables de nous transporter, le titre de Compulsion Games réalise un sans-faute côté ambiance, tout en parvenant à apporter suffisamment de variété dans ses phases de gameplay. Même si tout n'est pas parfait, South of Midnight se pose comme le titre le plus abouti du studio canadien à ce jour, et ne manquera pas de satisfaire les joueurs à la recherche d'un titre à la fois bien raconté, et bien rythmé.

Compulsion Games firma la que sin duda es su magna opus con South of Midnight. Una tremenda aventura en un rincón ficticio del sur profundo de Estados Unidos que toma multitud de influencias para crear un mundo tan peculiar como atractivo. Impactante en lo visual, sobresaliente en lo musical y con unos personajes e interpretaciones más que a la altura, lo nuevo de Microsoft Studios logra atrapar con una jugabilidad adictiva y fluida que termina por dar forma a un producto redondo y 100% recomendable

South of Midnight se establece como una buena aventura de plataformas, que se ve potenciada por una narrativa más profunda de lo esperado y un apartado artístico absolutamente cautivador. Si bien el combate y el núcleo jugable se quedan algo cortos, nos encontramos ante uno de los juegos de Xbox con más personalidad de la generación.

South of Midnight me ha dejado con sentimientos encontrados. No esperaba una superproducción, pero sí algo realmente cautivador. Sin embargo, pese a su belleza visual, no logra brillar en su diseño jugable. La estructura es monótona. La exploración, limitada. En lo que más se centra tampoco deslumbra. Las plataformas son básicas y el combate en arenas es poco más que funcional. Aunque su universo, inspirado en mitos del sureste estadounidense, es fascinante y único, la historia principal se ve opacada por personajes secundarios que diluyen el enfoque narrativo, lo que termina haciendo que Hazel, la protagonista, a veces parezca más un testigo que un personaje central. Visualmente, el juego es impresionante, eso sí, y la banda sonora me ha parecido exquisita. No deja de ser un juego disfrutable, pero que podría haber sido mucho más si hubiera equilibrado su belleza con una mejor narrativa, estructura y mecánicas.

South of Midnight has a good story, and is a good action adventure game. It may get a little repetitive at times, but the story keeps you in enough to keep playing. I gave it all the time I could, and maybe it deserves another playthrough, since I walked away asking more questions then I started with. I only need to hear the music once though, I guarantee.

South of Midnight, tirando le somme, si presenta all'appuntamento coi giocatori come il più convenzionale degli action/adventure, imperniato su una struttura ludica gradevole, per quanto piuttosto ripetitiva, e sorretto da una scrittura raffinata e da direzione artistica di prim'ordine. È un peccato che la presenza di qualche ingenuità sul fronte del design non gli consenta di raggiungere vette d'eccellenza, specie se si considera la cura infusa nell'imbastire una cornice audiovisiva di questo calibro. Più forma che sostanza, dunque, ma se siete alla ricerca di un buon titolo in cui investire una decina di ore di spensieratezza, magari lasciandovi trasportare da una storia capace di toccare le corde dell'animo, allora la nuova opera di Compulsion Games potrebbe fare al caso vostro.

To call South of Midnight a ‘perfect’ Game Pass title would be disrespectful because the reality is that our industry has become obsessed with bloated experiences, and it’s led us to believe that anything less isn’t worth paying for – at least at full price. The truth though, is that we need more creatives being just that, and South of Midnight is part of Xbox’s supposed plans to let its developers cook. We just have to hope that the kitchen doesn’t close when service is over, because we need developers like Compulsion Games to make games like South of Midnight – shorter experiences that tell new and exciting stories set in immersive worlds, even if the gameplay feels familiar, because nothing beats a good story.

Blue Prince is the kind of puzzle game that dug deep into my brain and didn’t let go. Its complex mysteries weave brilliantly into the careful decision making of how to lay out the mansion’s rooms on each randomized run, leaving me building floorplans in my sleep almost every night after I played it. The story that slowly emerges within this fascinating place is also a compelling one, and it had me hungrily hunting for clues and combinations for many hours after I reached the credits while also poetically tying into the mechanics that lead you to them. Hitting a dead end you did everything in your power to avoid can frustrate from time to time, but this sprawling estate has so much to uncover that the randomness never stalled my progress for too long. If The Witness, Portal, and Myst are already emblazoned on the Mount Rushmore of first-person puzzle games, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Blue Prince carved alongside them soon enough.
