The Red Star is going to appeal to some people because of its Streets of Rage/Ikaruga-like moments, but I’m not one of them. I like Streets of Rage and Ikaruga, but The Red Star only offers glimpses of gameplay that feel like those awesome titles. The boss fights are fun and I enjoyed upgrading my weapons and abilities with the points I earned, but there’s no story here, the game isn’t all that challenging, and it’s pretty mundane looking. It just left me with that “eh” feeling. This is an adequate shooter – no more, no less.

The game's atmosphere and unique design choices will make it a worthwhile experience for some, but Metro 2033 suffers from a number of issues (poor implementation of stealth, recurring glitches, etc.). Fans of post-apocalyptic stories should consider giving this a shot, if they can tolerate the aforementioned setbacks.

Cave Story is one of the best "NES" games ever made. It tells an elaborate tale full of endearing characters, fun boss fights, and satisfying weapons. The polish and tight controls are on par with what you would have found in a first-party Nintendo NES game. Delightful, whimsical, and curious, this is a game that begs to be explored.

The final question, then, is which version to get. This Virtual Console re-release wins the argument on price, as at just eight bucks to download it's an incredible value -- tracking down the GBA or DS editions would certainly cost you much more than that. But that may be the only key advantage this VC version holds, in the end. The remakes have been much more in-line with the story and gameplay experience that Square's artisans originally intended, and are certainly a better way to go for players, like me, who've just somehow managed to miss this adventure altogether over the past 20 years. So I'd recommend investing the extra time and cash to find one of those two portable packages, unless, unlike me, you're a gamer who first played this one in this original SNES form back in the '90s. Then the nostalgia you'll get from its many quirks, its goofy translation and its far-too-easy difficulty level will only serve to reinforce your love for Cecil's quest -- a love that I can understand and appreciate, even though this way my first time meeting the spoony bard.

Major League Baseball 2K10 isn’t a terrible outing for America’s favorite pastime, but it does lack any form of originality and rests too firmly on mechanics that we’ve played with before. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the game still has online multiplayer that’s easy enough to setup and performs well if you can find someone to play against. Still, at the end of the day MLB 2K10 is a ho-hum offering that not many people will be able to enjoy if they’ve played 2K Sports baseball in the last half-decade.

There's something to be said for dialing back a concept and letting simplicity shine. The sense of reward and increasing levels of temporal thinking needed to plow through Echoshift make it instantly more engaging than Echochrome. The game's sense of minimalist charm and gently sloping difficulty curve keep it familiar but improved in nearly every way over its spiritual predecessor. If you're looking to add a few more wrinkles to that grey matter of yours, Echoshift is a perfect way to do it. Just don't come crying to us when you start having dreams about finishing some of those later levels.

Though it's unfortunately a port-up of a handheld concept, what started on the PSP with Dynasty Warriors: Strikeforce has blossomed into an honest-to-goodness mission-based, social loot crawl. As much item collection as it is button mashing, the changes are both dramatic and welcome -- and dramatic enough that KOEI may have actually found a way to shut up some of the haters. OK, like six of 'em.

Feeding Frenzy 2: Shipwreck Showdown doesn’t exactly go belly up but it does feel quite stale, especially if you’re playing it on your PS3 expecting some sort of evolution from the Xbox 360 iteration that came out more than two years ago. You’re still roaming across the screen and munching on the lesser fish and none of the game’s modes deviate from that formula. That’d be fine if there was some fresh content packed into the same gameplay, but there’s none to be found. Feeding Frenzy 2 on PS3 isn’t a bad game, but if you’ve played any other version you’ll want to let this one swim on by.

If the learning curve of the original Supreme Commander proved a little too steep for you, then you'll find a lot to like about the sequel. Gas Powered Games streamlined its resource and upgrade systems to make a game that's easier to play, but one that doesn't lose a lot of what made Supreme Commander so great in the first place. The pace is faster, the factions more diverse, and it's a whole lot easier to get the impressively large and powerful experimental units out onto the field, making for an experience that's more inviting and immediately rewarding. It's a real-time strategy game with a huge amount of depth and a fantastic interface that lets you stay in control of large-scale battles between warring robotic factions. The single-player campaign doesn't offer much in the way of entertainment, but if you're looking at this for the online play, you won't be disappointed.

It's great to see developers and publishers taking risks with franchises in danger of growing too stale, and Command & Conquer's traditional mechanics were some of the most well known in the genre. To really move forward, something had to be switched up. Instead of making a handful of tweaks and refinements, EA Los Angeles rewrote the entire gameplay formula, making for an experience that barely resembles Command & Conquer at all. In Command & Conquer 4, allegedly the final game in the Tiberian version of the franchise, you get a lightning fast brand of class-based real-time tactical conflict. The bases are mobile, the Tiberium fields are gone, and securing capture points is your primary goal. It's fast and frenzied chaos, and there's certainly fun to be had in the online, team-based matches. But the inconsistent and ultimately disappointing campaign and awkward unlock system restricts the game to the realm of the good but non-essential.

There are some occasional technical quirks and the game's never going to blow you away with big innovations you haven't already seen in a Rockstar game, but overall this is a capable clone that's well worth its price of just eight bucks.

Fragile Dreams is a great example of a spectacular concept whose execution could have used a little more thought and time. I love the premise, the setting, some of the characters, and the production values. The story is engrossing. Exploring the lush, beautiful environments in search of clues is fun. The flashlight controls and effects are really impressive. Even combat, in dire need of a lock-on, is functional. It really does have a lot going for it, and you'll see that reflected in the scores below. And yet, some of the design decisions and gameplay conventions are exceedingly tired and frustrating. The unnecessary, uninspired fetch quests, blatant backtracking and awkward item management system distract and subtract in a big way from what is otherwise a quality experience. If you fancy yourself an addict for Japanese adventure games, you will want to experience Fragile Dreams. But with some glaring issues that really overshadow the gameplay experience, there's just no way I can glowingly recommend the title, as much as I had hoped I could.

With Resident Evil 5, Capcom has broken away from many of the survival horror conventions it pioneered. The creepy suspense of the earlier games has been replaced with an action-packed intensity that will instantly appeal to some gamers and disappoint others. As an action game, RE5 is a success, and there’s a wealth of replayability through item collection, weapon upgrades, score chasing and the unlockable Mercenaries mode. But this is no gentle nudge to the formula of the previous main RE games; it’s an evolution. And if you can accept it as that, you just might love Resident Evil 5. The extra content packed in with the Gold Edition is just that: extra. It’s not essential, and you probably wouldn’t miss it if it wasn’t there. Its inclusion doesn’t necessarily make the Resident Evil 5 experience better or worse; it just extends it.

Infinite Space offers dozens of hours of deep space exploration and storytelling, but the overall package is clunky and inconvenient. Sci-fi and anime fans might find the story worth sticking around for, though, and there are some interesting characters to get to know. But getting to those good bits will test your patience.
