Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver feels, at least to me, like a gap filler to make the wait for a new Pokemon game just a little more bearable. Gold and Silver are considered by many to be the best of the Pokemon RPG best, and it's easy to see why after playing this remake: it's still an addictive and fun adventure, fully compatible with all the versions of Pokemon made for the Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance. But, yes, it's a remake. Just like FireRed and LeafGreen on GBA, HeartGold and SoulSilver existed already in the Pokemon canon, and obviously the design team didn't work as hard to recreate an existing game as it would have an original experience. GameFreak did, admittedly, add a bunch of elements to make a purchase worthwhile, both for the double (or triple, or quadrupal) dippers and the newbies. The Pokewalker is the Pokemon equivalent of the free prize inside a cereal box: you might find yourself buying it for the gadget than the game itself, but it's the game itself that contains all the deliciousness. And what a tasty cereal it is.

Assassin's Creed II transforms a middling action game into an intriguing and consistently entertaining open-world adventure. Based on this game, Ubisoft Montreal should run a clinic on how to iterate a franchise and if the series continues in this vein, the next installment will take aim at Rockstar's best efforts. The experience is layered, unique, and shows an incredible attention to detail. This is one case where the sequel has triumphed over the original by catching the gameplay up to the already excellent visuals. No matter what your preconceptions are about Assassin's Creed II, the game is well worth your time and money.

Lips: Party Classics includes the same set of improvements and flaws that were present in the Number One Hits song pack. It'll add 40 songs to your music library on Xbox 360 that has something for everyone even though Karaoke veterans have probably already belted them out hundreds of times. Singers hoping for a way to avoid swapping discs from previous Lips games, or some sort of online multiplayer will have to keep waiting, but overall this song pack will keep you crooning for another party.

MLB 2K10 on PSP is certainly lacking in some very key areas. Most notably, trying to emulate authentic baseball on an under-powered system. Because of technical limitations you’ll see guys sliding around the field while wearing cleats, animations that simply don’t work and a frustrating control scheme during some situations. I’d like to see them re-tool the game modes and the core gameplay so that we get something that feels like it truly belongs on the PSP. Thankfully GM Career is a solid mode and online play works admirably well, though it is disappointing to only have ad hoc rather than infrastructure capabilities. At the end of the day MLB 2K10 will work for you if you’re absolutely desperate for a baseball game that at least appears to be authentic when you first turn on the system. Sadly after a few hours spent with the annoyances that 2K10 presents, you’ll realize that staying home with the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 (or, better yet, the PC) version is the way to go.

Sonic Classic Collection is a good, but flawed compilation for the Nintendo DS that just screams “small budget, short development cycle!” It is what it is: four great Sonic games accurately ported to a half-assed compilation.

To make matters much worse, there’s no multiplayer – not like that should be a surprise – or online functionality of any kind in MLB 2K10. There’s no career mode, no homerun derby; there’s basically nothing to justify the money that you just plopped down if you currently have this in your DS. For ten dollars more you could have gotten a fully-featured PC title that handles very well if you have the system to support it. This representation of baseball on DS should be quickly forgotten. If you’re desperate for a mobile version of America's favorite pastime, look to your iPhone before ever coming close to wasting your money on this.

On the field, The Show is top-notch. I absolutely love the mechanics and the battles between pitcher and batter. Little was changed, but really, little needed to be changed. Visually, this is a real stunner. Great animations, nice stadiums, the player's look and feel right. And this is as full a feature set as anyone could ask of a baseball game from the deep and engrossing Road to the Show to a ridiculously in-depth Franchise mode to Online Season Leagues. MLB 10 has it all! But it also has some issues. It's impossible to look past the poor trade AI or the odd decisions from your manager that weaken Road to the Show. MLB 10 edges very close to being the best console baseball game ever made. But it doesn't quite make it there. It's still great, just not baseball perfection.

MLB 2K10 is not a good game, but unlike most wholly unimpressive titles, this one actually has promise. The control mechanics don’t rely too heavily on cheesy motion mechanics and the few that do perform reasonably well. The real issue is the heinously old engine that makes the game chug along and couldn’t generate a smooth edge if its virtual life depended on it. Also in need of a revamp is the feature set which doesn’t have an original idea or Wii-inspired mode in the bunch. The groundwork is there for an enjoyable game of baseball, it’s just too bad that there are no parts to leverage the decent mechanics.

Those looking at Bad Company 2 as only a single-player game might come away disappointed. It's an action packed, gorgeous, and explosive game but it doesn't quite come together into a campaign for the ages. It more feels like an added bonus to the multiplayer game and for those in search of that, this is a great choice. Bad Company 2 as an online shooter is flexible and engaging, offering several features that the competition can only dream of. If you're looking for a more strategic and team-based change of pace, look no further. This is the game for you.

MLB 2K10, despite its many flaws, is still a much better core game of baseball than the series presented last year. It's just too bad that My Player mode didn't work out as well as I had hoped after first playing it. There are some very questionable design decisions that will hopefully be ironed by next season because the idea behind the mode itself is sound. You can also see that the foundation for great baseball is nearly there with things like the pitcher vs. batter gameplay going so smoothly. I feel like I've said this for the past several years with MLB 2K, but I'm really looking forward to what they can put out with MLB 2K11. Let's hope that release will be able to capitalize on what 2K started with MLB 2K10.

After years of waiting for a truly standout flight game on Wii, XSEED has really delivered with Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces. Mixing in dozens of different mission types within the game's 18 stages, the Project Aces team puts a more arcade-inspired anime spin on its typical flight engine, and the result is a truly rewarding one. There are still a few stages that drop the ball visually, and every now and then you'll find a line of dialogue that sounds a bit too cheesy, but the core gameplay is strong enough to keep you coming back for more. Once you're pulled in there's plenty to expand on as well, with upgradeable planes, an in-game achievement system, and even a two player piggy-back mode that puts your buddy in control of an additional aiming reticule on screen. Simple, but worth a shot. The animated cut scenes are well executed, the story is decent if you take the time to pay attention to it, and the challenge is truly there should you take on the game's top difficulty level. In the end though, it's all about the core gamepaly, and Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces will have you jumping in to the cockpit time and time again. The action is fast, the dog fighting is intense, and you simply won't find a better flight game on Wii.

Shattered Memories isn't your typical Silent Hill game. Some devoted fans will undoubtedly raise a fuss over every difference whether subtle or grand, but I believe this re-imagining succeeds as both a sequel and a departure. The overarching narrative, characters, and monsters will all seem faintly familiar to Silent Hill purists, but Climax has taken the series and run with it, crafting a title refreshingly different yet still at times terrifying. The game looks fabulous, the controls feel tailor made for Wii, the flashlight mechanic is stunningly atmospheric and useful, and the decision is to omit weapons results in chilling chase sequences. There is simply a lot to love about Shattered Memories, which is why it's so easy to recommend the title despite a couple of shortcomings. I feel that the separation between safe exploration and puzzling and run-for-your-life monster scenarios is too transparent and as a result you will inevitably come to fear the ice and few things else. And despite a unique psych profile system that allows for multiple endings and various changes throughout the adventure, the game runs a bit short -- perhaps too short for some. Even so, there are some incredible moments encapsulated within Harry's icy journey and you will be both wowed and scared as you finally uncover the truth about his daughter's disappearance and the nightmarish goings-on in the creepy town.

A great soundtrack and unique art style can't save what is ultimately a failed experiment. Using a guitar peripheral to control a platformer is just as clumsy as you would imagine. Drop the gimmick and Fret Nice becomes much more playable with a regular controller, but then you're left with a pretty run-of-the-mill game. Kudos to the developer for trying something different, but different doesn't always mean fun.

Sonic and SEGA All-Stars Racing may not have a whole lot in the gameplay department that it can call its own, but Sumo Digital took what worked and built a SEGA-themed experience that captures what makes the company's games so memorable. This racer is surprisingly deep and robust, and even with its unoriginal design it's a great time no matter which version you get. The Nintendo DS version is a great complement to the console design because it shares similarities while retaining its own unique feel.
