Eragon for the DS is a game so ambitious and huge, absolutely refusing to scale down its console-like design that I have to recommend it in spite of its many flaws. I actually wish it weren't a movie tie-in so that Amaze could revisit the game, address its problems and continue the series on the DS. Easily-frustrated gamers may be put off by several of the above-mentioned criticisms, but those looking for a solid action title (and willing to overlook some nagging flaws) might find something very special here.

It was great for free, as a packed-in Genesis cartridge back in 1989. It’s not so great, or even good, for 800 Points, as a digitally downloadable Virtual Console title on the Wii today. Altered Beast should only be considered for download by Sega gamers of yesteryear, nostalgic to re-experience this arcade port in all its voice-distorting glory. Other players simply looking for fresh and inventive games from the Genesis back catalog would be better served spending their Wii Points on pretty much any other Sega title on offer. Pack-ins may be making a comeback, but Altered Beast is one old bundled bonus that you wouldn’t have missed much if it had been left out of the box.

If there's much to save the experience of Platypus, I couldn't quite say what it was. There is nothing here that stands out beyond the clay graphics and even those are shrunk to complete irrelevance. It's definitely a side-scrolling shooter and if you're so desperate for a new one, then this will be familiar. But aside from that there's little reason to pick this up. If you want a clay fix, buy some Play-Doh. But if you want to play a fun game look most everywhere else.

The son of Kong arrives here in a complete conversion of his arcade debut, but this game's too short of an experience to recommend (never mind that it's already been made available through Animal Crossing and as the packed-in "launch title" for the Game Boy Advance e-Reader just a few years ago.) It's nice to see Junior, but not enough to warrant a purchase on his own.

2D platforming was one of the industry's most popular genres through the 8- and 16-bit generations, and Bonk's first outing is one of the classics of the age (inspiring numerous sequels, spin-offs and ports in following years). Those follow-ups you can safely go without -- but the original Bonk's Adventure is firmly recommended as an icon of the 16-bit era's oft-forgotten third place finisher.

As far as Trek games go, Tactical Assault beats out many of its predecessors. Sadly, that's not too hard to do. It offers a decent mix of strategy and action, though both halves never gel very well. The option to pilot several vessels in two different campaigns is definitely nice, but the story and missions could have used more variety. Lastly, Tactical Assault looks and sounds the part, though Trek aficionados will still find the game's presentation ho-hum.

Winx Club: Quest for the Codex is unfocused and unpolished. Its handful of unique gameplay ideas are held back by a distractingly poor graphical presentation and control issues that plague some of its mini-games. If you're a fan of the Winx Club, you're probably better off skipping this release and waiting to see if a sequel addresses these problems. And if you're a fan of the shooter genre, forget the fairies. Stick with those sleek, high-tech spaceships.

Don't let our nitpicking dissuade you too much; WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2007 is still a very competent portable wrestling game. Regardless of its dated animations, rosters, foolish AI, and obvious downgrade compared to its console counterparts, it's still a heck of a lot of fun. Thousands of different grappling holds await those who tread its squared circle, while the new ultimate control moves and hot spots add depth to a system that most would expect to be exhausted. In other words, think of SmackDown 2007 as the Ric Flair of videogames -- a wrestling great with enough titles and fond memories to keep its forward momentum for another year, but aged to a point where we're questioning how much longer it can go.

Cartoon Network Racing is a bad kart racer in every sense of the word. The track design is poor, the game feels slow and, worst of all, the controls are terrible. If you don't have a Nintendo system and are looking for a good kart racer, go with any of the other million titles out there and avoid this one at all cost.

The swan song of the NES never got much attention. Gamers had already moved on to other systems, for one, and its chances of finding an audience were further crippled by the fact that a superior SNES version of the same game was released on the same day. It's curious that Nintendo has chosen to send out the 8-bit Woods to Wii gamers, when the 16-bit version is more fully featured. On top of that, this NES edition is also available to owners of Animal Crossing, where it appears as a rare playable collectible. If you're interested in this title's place in Nintendo history, give it a download and see for yourself how the NES went out. But if you're more concerned with its unique take on puzzle genre gameplay, give this one a "wait and see" – you'd be better served to spend your points on the SNES version, when and if it becomes available.

It won't blow you away with its narrative or characters, but Secret Files: Tunguska can still entertain with some interesting puzzles and easy to use interface. There are a few standout sequences in the game such as uncovering the mysteries of a moving train and working with two lead characters to solve the same puzzle, but for the most part Secret Files feels pretty standard. That's not such a bad thing, however, as there are still lots of items to combine across some varied environments. It won't be long before you're absorbed into the game world, trying your best to properly utilize that plush teddy bear you just picked up. It's one of those games where you get the feeling that if few things were done differently, this one could have been really great. As it stands, Secret Files: Tunguska is a solid adventure game that does many things right and leaves plenty of room for improvement.

EA Sports Fight Night Round 3 Isn't the huge improvement that Round 2 was compared to Round 1, and the lack of AI and the impoverished career mode is a disappointment. It isn't a huge leap over the 360 version released ten months ago either. That said, Round 3 is still one hell of an addicting multiplayer game that provides hours and hours of hardcore boxing fun. The toned-down haymakers, better balancing, and inclusion of various styles makes playing with your buddy an awesome experience, and the mechanics are so good it even makes fighting against the CPU worthwhile in the beginning. It's not to be missed if you have gaming roommates or friends, but it's not to be counted on if you regularly forget what the sun looks like.

Compared to some of your other launch options, Need for Speed Carbon just doesn’t cut it as an upgraded GameCube “Wii-make”. While the control is actually pretty solid - using the Wii controller as a virtual steering wheel - the technical limitations are just too numerous to ignore. On one hand you have a game that simulates arcade driving amazingly well using a tiny tilt-enabled remote instead of a bulky (and extremely expensive) racing wheel peripheral. On the other hand, however, you’ve got a game that not only feels a bit under par visually when compared to other Wii titles thus far, but also takes a huge hit in frame rate. The game manages to play well, display in 16:9 and 480p, but simply dies when it’s expected to put anything more than 20-30 frames per second, and that really hurts the experience. Team that with some lazy choices in interface control (Using a d-pad to control on-screen cursors instead of the Wii IR sensor? You’ve got to be kidding us.), and you have a game that shows off a generally tight racing feel but misses the boat in nearly every other category. A lower poly count or more conservatively detailed textures is one thing, but not being able to pull off slightly upgraded GameCube visuals on a next-gen system without a noticeable lag is unforgivable at this point. If you’re dying for some solid racing and can get past the flaws, Need for Speed Carbon may still be a valid choice for you. For the mainstream gamer out there though, we just can’t recommend it. The control works, it’s just too lazy of a port for its own good.

Synetic has a basic grounding in good car physics and better-than-average artificial intelligence, which gives World Racing 2 an underlying level of quality. Unfortunately, its poor presentation, rough course design and horrific car designs add to the game's poor sense of balance and fairness. And in the end, World Racing 2 is not a game you'll end up wanting to spend money on, whether it's as a new or a used game.

Bomberman '93 is a great little game. It supports the multiplayer, party-gaming focus that the series has always been known for, and the single player mode is still fun and challenging. In short, it's an excellent representation of Bomberman's early days that's certainly worth a look.

Spider-Man: Battle for New York is a pretty forgettable game. What hurts it more than anything is that there are much better handheld Spider-Man games already available (including one from the same developer). Torus Games didn't completely drop the ball on this project, but they didn't capture that pure joy of being Spider-Man that made the webslinger's previous handheld games so fun. More swinging without restriction and less mediocre combat would have taken this game a lot further.
