We haven't seen a strategy game this complex and this finely tuned in quite some time. Gas Powered Games delivers a monster of an RTS, and despite how long it may be before you fully understand its intricacies, it's a surprisingly addictive game. The strategic zoom and base automation are so intuitive and helpful, it makes many other RTS games seem confining and simplistic. For hardcore Total Annihilation fans and strategy gamers is general, this is your opus. If you're a casual strategy fan, you're truly missing out if you pass this one by. Though the single player is flawed, and unit pathing and behavior occasionally runs into problems, Supreme Commander's online is one of the most intense, enjoyable gaming experiences out there.

If you can look past the unimpressive, dated visuals and a serious lack of sheen (some poor interface decisions, occasionally suspect AI vehicle pathfinding, etc) then you’ll discover a superbly rewarding, compelling and authentic squad-based FPS, the likes of which haven’t been seen since Operation Flashpoint wowed us all those years ago.

Bonanza Bros pretty clearly demonstrates its arcade roots. It plays and feels like a time-limited experience as the appeal can be quite short-lived. It is a little more fun with a friend, but the limited number of levels and relatively simplistic gameplay make this game difficult to recommend unless you're a diehard fan.

Soldier Blade may not have the amazing style and visuals of current-day shooters, but it definitely has gameplay to spare. The power-up system offers just enough depth to keep things interesting, the game’s presentation is fast and crisply detailed, and the added modes make it a much better choice for top-view shooters than the previously-released Super Star Soldier. Soldier Blade is still one player, but the added challenge modes and long-lasting single player campaign (the full arcade mode is around an hour long, which is great for the TurboGrafx era) makes it well worth the $6 price tag. Stingy VC shoppers may want to stick to R-Type III and wait for the impending Gradius III (or LifeForce series, should we get that down the line), but if you’ve got 600 Wii points to share, suffer from the “blast-a-mass” disease (clinically referred to as A.D.D.), and are looking for a fun time-waster to dip in and out of over the next few months, Soldier Blade is a solid choice.

flOw is an extremely interesting game for multiple reasons. The only goal is to evolve and see what's next, and its presentation couldn't be any better. The downside is that that's about all there is to the game. You evolve in a linear manner, so replaying the game is only fun if you want to veg out. It's certainly worth a purchase if only because it's so unique, but don't expect to be glued to your television for hours on end.

This NES version of Kirby's Adventure has never been re-released before. But the 2002 Game Boy Advance game Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land did use this title's level design as a basis, basically remaking the NES Adventure with updated, GBA-level graphics and sound. You can't beat the original, though. Even if you own and have played through Nightmare in Dream Land, the Virtual Console Kirby's Adventure still comes highly recommended. It's Kirby in his purest, most fun form. Don't miss it.

Now 16 years after its initial release, Streets of Rage is definitely a mixed bag of presentation and gameplay. While it’s the first in a legendary trilogy of brawlers, the game’s combat is slower and clunkier than fans may remember, and the adventure – while still pretty fun – may not hold up to your memories of the game. Streets of Rage is an awesome title if you’ve never ripped through the franchise before now, but with the knowledge of its successors (particularly Streets of Rage III), it’s hard to go back to the original. The graphical presentation is just a notch higher than Sega Master System, the audio is generic and offers only extremely short snippets of digitized voice samples, and the amount of reused assets (enemies and bosses specifically) cuts the lasting appeal short. Still, Streets of Rage is an awesome chunk of history for both the SEGA Genesis and the brawler genre, and if you’ve already invested in a pair of classic controllers – and have a friend that’s into beat-em-ups as well – Streets of Rage should last you at least a few entertaining hours. For the more conservative VC shopper out there, you may want to hold out for the sequels which are undoubtedly on the way.

While it's apparently quite easy for a good RPG to turn the heads of our console editors and leave them gasping for superlatives, the fact is that the RPG market on the PC is considerably more competitive. Add in the fact that Jade Empire is nearly two years old and it's not hard to understand that the PC version isn't quite the revelation that it was on the Xbox. That said, Jade Empire is an instantly captivating experience for any action RPG fan who hasn't yet played it on the Xbox. The characters, settings and storyline are filled with fantastic details and the whole game is dripping with atmosphere. There are always meaningful and interesting choices to make throughout the game and a wide range of combat styles to explore. On the other hand, the linear missions tend to simplify the "good" and "bad" morality system and you'll need to focus on just a few combat styles in order to stay alive. Like the PC version of Knights of the Old Republic before it, Jade Empire is a remarkable RPG that, apart from better graphics and load times, really has little to separate it from the Xbox version from two years ago. If you've played it before, there's nothing here that you can't miss. If you missed the game on the Xbox, however, you're in for a real treat.

NBA Street Homecourt is a great addition to the sports library on next-gen consoles and a step up for EA's vaunted franchise. The Trick Remixer and new Gamebreaker system will have you jumping out of your gaming chair. Visually, the cartoony-art style surely helps keep the framerate at a blazing 60 fps, with an excellent animation system. While the teams rosters could use and update and the Homecourt Challenge a bit more drama, the gameplay is as good as arcade hoops gets. IGN officially gives NBA Street Homecourt "mad props."

Seeing Space Harrier II running on the Wii gives some hope for the future – perhaps Yu Suzuki will be inspired by the new console’s unique controls and choose to work on a fresh project taking advantage of that potential. An update to Space Harrier, using Wiimote aiming, Nunchuk character movement and having a silky-smooth 60fps framerate would be killer. But, unfortunately, none of that is here in this simple emulation. This version’s tough to love, and even tougher to recommend. You’d be better off saving your 800 Points and going for a different Genesis title – I’m sure Yu won’t mind at all.

With so much written about Final Fantasy VI in the decade-plus since its release, there's nothing I can tell you that you haven't heard before. What matters above all else, though, is that even in 2007, FF6 is exceptional fun. Even with its dated visuals and familiar concepts, it's one of the greatest games the world has ever seen, and it's just as entertaining now as it was during Clinton's first term. Don't miss it.

It would have been hard to recommend the broken Military Madness that first debuted on December 18, plagued as it was by a simple but annoyingly persistent emulation glitch. As that's no longer a factor, the game's true value is restored. Overall Military Madness is a lot of fun, and certainly worth a look if you're a fan of turn-based, grid-based, moonbase strategy. We'll forgive Nintendo and Hudson the oversight this time, but let's hope that future VC releases don't arrive with any more technical troubles.

Backyard Basketball 2007 is – and seems to forever be – the same exact Backyard Sports template stamped from sport to sport. 2007 means a new cover, a few new players, but the same half-cooked gameplay and presentation of the franchise all over again. There’s very little added content to keep younger gamers interested, and wherever corners could be cut in the production they were, as the general interface, gameplay execution, audio, and visuals all resemble something from the original Playstation or early N64 days. Characters are low-poly and basic, it’s difficult to tell the difference between the pros when on the court, and the overall experience is simply lacking from all sides. If the goal is to make a quick buck off the NBA license and younger PS2/GameCube/PC crowd, the Backyard Sports franchise is a success. If it’s about delivering a quality gaming experience to the younger crowd, however, the series has again missed the mark. Being a children’s product is no justification for sub-par quality.
