What made the first Oddworld so fantastic was the integration of story, action, art design and sour humor that made it one of the most polished packages I've ever seen on a console. You may not have enjoyed the 2D Prince of Persia style gameplay, or maybe you didn't like the creepy character design -- but as a package, it was hard to argue that Oddworld as a whole was the product of a unique company, and a unique mind. Those of us that loved every bit of the original game -- and I'm one of them -- felt like we'd finally found a platform game for grown ups. Munch is also that, but only in spurts and moments. The jump to 3D has been a tough one on the series, and rather than tweak the game design altogether, they opted to mimic the 2D "learn from death" style, which plays out as slow, repetitive, and at times tedious in the large and more complex 3D environments. What's worse is that the game and the storyline aren't integrated at all, with cutscenes wedged betweens levels that have no thematic connection. The final product comes off as anything but polished, and suffers from a lack of variety, and an overabundance of repetition that keeps this game from truly shining like I wished it would. As much as I like the characters and the design of the new Munch game, I'm still hoping for the true spiritual sequel to my good old Abe.

The second incredibly sub par title I've played over the past two weeks (the other being THQ's even worse Tetris Worlds monstrosity); it hasn't been looking very good for my PS2 so far this April. Obviously a rut that's sure to be remedied faster than not, this lack of quality software lately has really helped me to appreciate the finer titles in life. So much in fact, that it only intensifies my feelings towards the following sentence: Avoid Top Angler like the plague.

Knockout Kings 2002 is a lot of fun and it looks amazing. It¿s as simple as that. The one major complaint I can come up with is the roster of fighters. Most of the big names are still in the game, but it seems like we¿re missing a few of the beloved legendary fighters from KK2001 on PS2. Other than that, this game delivers a fun experience that will have you perspiring more than you want. It¿s the kind of game that¿ll start grudge matches between you and your buddies and cause lots of hoopin¿ and hollerin¿ with each brain twisting knockout. Even with the built-in two player appeal, depth could be become a weakness for this game. More fighters and a deeper career mode are luxuries that I would like to see in future versions because they¿d keep me involved with the game longer. KK2002¿s boxing engine has it all over Mike Tyson¿s Heavyweight Boxing but Iron Mike¿s custom fighter/career mode should be a model for the future of boxing videogames.

Occasionally you play a game whose problems confuse more than frustrate. In Destroyer Command you get both. The ideas behind the game are relatively solid but the actual construction of the game is woefully weak. There are far too many little errors for this to be enjoyable by all but the most fanatical elements of the community. And while I like good sims, I dislike missing functionality even more. I used to like SSI's simulations and I had hoped that Ultimation would be able to take up the mantle and continue the legacy. The sad fact is that Destroyer Command is a below average title that should've stayed in dry dock for a few more months. At the very least the title might have been delayed a few more weeks to iron out the most offensive and obvious bugs. With a few patches they may be back to speed but the AI problems need to be addressed before any serious fun can enter the picture. Don't let the dearth of submarine sims fool you into trying this one unless it's part of a ransom demand and then only if you really like the person who's being ransomed.

ASB is far from perfect, but its successes easily outweigh its deficits. Anyone who purchases this game, rather than waiting for Triple Play or WSB won't be disappointed. I can't beam enough over the Franchise Mode and the great off season menu. The Player Cards are a nice touch and should become a staple of all sports games. Acclaim should be commended for the amount of care they put into this game. Last year High Heat was the champ on PS2, but Acclaim may just take over that title with their latest outing. If you love a good baseball sim and you want to invest some serious time in multiple seasons, this is the game for you.

Not a lot to dislike here, honestly, unless you have a rabid aversion to golf. This is a very well-done golf game in the simulation mode, and one with a particularly friendly attitude towards newer players. They'll appreciate the tutorials and intuitive gameplay, while I expect advanced players will like the more detailed options available to them. Everyone should get a kick out of the career-oriented challenge features, and speed golf is there for multiplayer fiends. It remains only to look forward to next year, when the series should only get better -- particularly, if we're lucky, better visuals and more courses. The partially 2D PC Tigers still do dwarf the selection of holes on tap here, even though the 3D presentation makes up for that and then some. No point in letting what might be get in the way of what is, though, particularly when what we have here is so good.

I enjoy NBA 2K2 mainly because it won my heart a few years ago as the NBA sim of choice and this latest version on Xbox is the best VC hoop game out there. The established animation-physics system and tough-as-nails AI have kept millions of gamers locked to their TVs for hours at a time always playing ¿just one more¿ and I¿m one of them. On the Xbox, the game looks better than ever and plays the same as I remember from Dreamcast. Visual Concepts¿ basketball engine will likely be refined even more when 2K3 comes out and this will be a great thing for all gamers. High Voltage¿s surprisingly solid engine for NBA Inside Drive 2002 has suddenly turned the NBA sim derby into a two horse race. Now that Sega Sports has established itself on other consoles with the 2K2 rounds of football and basketball, both as solid as expected, the future is going to be a bright one indeed for sports gamers. Upon its release NBA 2K2 will be the best NBA sim available on the Xbox, getting the nod over Inside Drive because Microsoft¿s game lacked way too many features to be taken as a wholehearted effort. If you¿ve been talking to your Xbox, waiting for your first hoop game, NBA 2K2 is it.

Gitaroo-Man, sadly, has "niche" written all over it, but everyone reading this had ought to do their very best to make that niche as large as possible. A niche is too small to hold a game like this -- it has a huge variety of rocking music, fascinating graphics, and an original gameplay system that manages to hold up surprisingly well in comparison to the monotonous rhythm competition. Put it this way -- the world deserves Gitaroo-Man Two. Make it happen.

Pac-man World 2 is a fun and friendly game that has a great level of accessibility to it. The graphics and sound are standard fare, but the Pac-man license really adds to appeal. Honestly, if the game were full of generic characters, the game would not be as fun. But seeing and hearing the sights and sounds I grew up with pull a string in me that I just can¿t let go of. And just look at Pac-man¿s smile. How could you say no to a face like that. The game follows just about every platforming convention, only with a Pac-man twist to it. Pac-man world 2 is a great game for younger gamers, who are obviously the game¿s target audience, but many older gamers can enjoy it as well. Maybe even more so, considering many younger gamers don¿t even know who Pac-man is. While not quite a fifty-dollar purchase, this game would be a great thirty-dollar or less title for fans of the Pac-man series, or for those who need a ¿safe¿ game to play after a round of Silent Hill, before going to sleep

Jekyll & Hyde might have been a great action/adventure title several years ago, but today it is far behind the curve. Poor graphics, horrible animation and the lack of any challenge far outweigh whatever story this game might have. Playing it through once is rough enough, so I can¿t imagine anyone ever giving it a second go. Perhaps if it had a great ending, it would shine a little brighter, but as many other games of this genre seem to ignore the dramatic ending lately, this one is no exception. There really is no reason to buy this game, unless a person really loves games that are at least four years behind its time.
