VectorCell’s beautiful cyberpunk universe lives up to the promises of the 1992 original. Fans will immediately appreciate what they see. Something’s lacking though. The goofy execution of the script and voice acting is jarring, but it’s an acceptable offense. The frustrating combat and sluggish controls are less forgivable, especially when so much of what’s wrapped around them seems so promising. Flashback is a good HD remake, there’s no question of that. But it isn’t a great one.

Difficile valutare il remake di Flashback: bisogna necessariamente scindere la passione e la ragione. L'episodio originale è stato effettivamente un titolo fondamentale negli anni '90 ma riproporlo in un modo così fedele, almeno in termini di level design e gameplay generale, non è stata probabilmente la scelta più saggia. I vecchi fan si ritroveranno davanti ad un titolo che ricorda bene l'originale ma che ha perso quello stile così unico, cedendo il passo ad una grafica 3D ben realizzata ma non appariscente né caratteristica, anche se in linea con le altre produzioni nate da budget simili. Chi si avvicinerà per la prima volta a Flashback troverà invece un titolo ben realizzato ma poco coinvolgente, proprio perché il mondo dei videogiochi è evoluto e ormai gli utenti vogliono sempre di più, soprattutto in termini di spettacolarità e narrazione. L'idea di includere l'edizione originale all'interno del remake, con tanto di finto cabinato da utilizzare per giocarla, farà sicuramente avvicinare queste due tipologie di utenti, ma molto probabilmente nessuno riuscirà davvero a ritenersi soddisfatto da questo nuovo episodio, per motivi differenti e tutti assolutamente condivisibili.

Nous ne vous cacherons pas que ce remake de Flashback nous a laissé une impression mitigée. Certes le fan qui idolâtre l'épisode original sera ravi qu'on vienne faire vibrer sa fibre nostalgique, mais il faut aussi reconnaître que le gameplay de cette nouvelle version est loin d'être au point. Finalement, la frustration prend le pas sur le plaisir des retrouvailles et on préférera se rabattre sur le jeu de 1992 plutôt que sur ce remake.

Unfortunately, whilst competent in execution and steeped in nostalgia, this remake of the 1992 classic Flashback doesn’t quite have the firepower or ingenuity to measure up in its own right against the current standard in platformers. It lacks the combat variety of a Shadow Complex or the distinctive art style of a Deadlight, and while its story still manages to intrigue there’s not enough moment-to-moment gameplay payoff to sustain it along the way. Flashback will certainly bring back some good memories, it just won’t create any new ones.

Remakes are always controversial and successfully producing them can be an incredibly difficult, thankless task. While VectorCell's effort isn't the worst attempt I've ever seen, it certainly isn't the nostalgic celebration it could and should have been. If you're looking for a fun retro classic with a modern lick of paint, try WayForward's DuckTales: Remastered, because regrettably Flashback is an experience best forgotten.

I typically frown on comparing games in reviews, but considering this was supposed to be a faithful remake of what's largely considered a classic, its crucial to note its shortcomings. Flashback isn't entirely bad -- I even caught myself having fun on several occasions -- but those looking for something as striking as the original Flashback likely wont find it here. If you're dying for something similar to Flashback, and don't mind wrestling with some control issues, an inferior story and a generic art-style, then this may be what you're looking for. Otherwise, you'd best just sit tight and hope that someone decides to make a version of the original game with a slightly higher resolution.

This whole game had potential to be a great remake, a spiritual successor, and so much more, but ultimately, fans of the original will want their memories back, and new players will want to forget it all together.
