Not all remakes are successful, but Heavy Spectrum’s new take on Shadow of the Beast is a triumph across the board. It has enough nostalgic throwback to draw in fans of the original, but plenty of updates for a new audience. I sincerely hope we can count on them and Sony to return to the lands of Karamoon for Shadow of the Beast II.

With its excellent side-scrolling platforming based experience, smooth battle system, intriguing narrative style, excellent graphics and high replay value, Shadow of the Beast is definitely a quality product. The lack of originality and somewhat unresponsive controls will be issues for some, but the well designed experience makes it easy to get past them.

Heavy Spectrum ha conseguido plasmar a la perfección las sensaciones que vivimos hace años, ya que algunas de las escenas a 4:3 y el ver los logotipos de Reflections y Psygnosis harán que el antiguo y veterano corazoncito del gamer pegue un salto en el pecho de satisfacción y nostalgia. Y para los más nuevos en el mundo de los videojuegos, se van a encontrar un juego muy vistoso, con una jugabilidad adictiva y con un gameplay con una dificultad que sube de manera progresiva, haciendo necesario tener que sacar lo mejor de nosotros a los mandos de nuestra Playstation 4 a medida que avanzamos en las tierras de Karamoon a los puños y cuchillas de Aarbron, un apartado técnico a la altura de los títulos del estilo y varias horas de juego que en comparación al precio hace que el título merezca la pena ser jugado, tanto si tuviste la oportunidad de jugarlo hace años, como si estás pensando en qué título vas a elegir de cara a tu próxima adquisición.

Shadow of the Beast è tutto sommato un prodotto dignitoso e rispettoso dell'originale. Esattamente come il suo predecessore offre un mondo affascinante ma una certa ripetitività nei combattimenti, che sono tuttavia interessanti nella loro dinamica simile a puzzle game. Forse avremmo apprezzato una storia un po' meno criptica e un finale più soddisfacente, ma se cercate un gioco semplice che stuzzichi il vostro animo nostalgico sarete accontentati.

From the way it relies on setting and music to tell the bulk of its story, to its use of simple mechanics on the way to score-based mastery, Shadow of the Beast takes old things and makes them feel decidedly less old. Walking to the right and killing everything that gets in your way may sound dull and straightforward, but here it’s elevated through thoughtful presentation, and combat that has more depth to it than initially meets the eye. Long after its many blood-soaked dismemberments fade from my memory, I’ll remember just how alien and otherworldly it felt between the fits of violence.

Shadow of the Beast is a game that was somewhat revolutionary for its time but obviously shows its age. It is still fun to play today, but its appeal might be lost on younger gamers who discovered video games well after the Commodore Amiga vanished into obsolescence. It is one of the nostalgia titles that when it is revisited it is actually enjoyable, unlike some other games that produced fond memories but are cringe worthy when actually played. This version of the game is included as a bonus item with the new remake, which adds considerable value to that title. The appeal of this is geared mostly toward people seeking a nostalgia fix. The game itself is fun, but the unforgiving difficulty, simple mechanics and extremely short play time make it undeniable what era of gaming this is from.

Nella sua essenzialità, Shadow of the Beast si rivela un titolo divertente e realizzato a dovere, capace di intrattenere anche per molto tempo nel caso foste degli accesi completisti. Alcune scelte discutibili per la calibrazione del livello di difficoltà e un'azione un po' troppo frammentata impediscono al gioco di imporsi come vorrebbe, rivelandosi un piacevole intrattenimento a tinte nostalgiche, ma nulla più.

Shadow of the Beast rappresenta al contempo un omaggio, un riammodernamento e una rivisitazione dell’omonimo action per Amiga: un corposo compendio digitale di un grande classico, pensato sia per le nuove leve, sia per gli irriducibili estimatori del retrogaming. È proprio per questo che, durante l’avventura, si ha la chiara impressione che Heavy Spectrum si sia concentrato più sul citazionismo e sulla ricchezza contenutistica che sulla sostanza ludica. Sul piano del gameplay questo remake è infatti claudicante: un combat system intuitivo ma poco bilanciato, sezioni platform mal calcolate, e una longevità ridotta ai minimi termini spuntano quindi inevitabilmente gli artigli della belva, il cui ruggito romba feroce solo in un comparto audiovisivo di grande fascino, riflesso di un immaginario potente e saturo di suggestioni. Così il destino di Shadow of the Beast sembra già iscritto nel suo stesso nome: nasce, vive e muore all’ombra di una bestia: quella originale.

Shadow of the Beast is a competent action platformer, though its multiple parts don’t come together to form a very cohesive whole. Many of those parts are frustrating or overall unenjoyable. The combat is appropriately brutal, and those seeking a bloody affair will find something to love here. However, it doesn’t have the tightly controlled feeling of other action greats, and the experience is worse for it. Some sections of the game also feel tacked on for little reason, with major story pieces locked away behind hidden unlockables. Still, if you do delve deeply into the game, there are many things to enjoy, and you’ll have some great visuals along the way.

Ce remake de Shadow of the Beast est en somme de plutôt bonne facture, mais nous laisse sur notre faim. On sent bien tout l’amour d’Heavy Spectrum pour le titre original et la passion qui s’en dégage, mais cela ne suffit malheureusement pas à passer outre les défauts inhérents au soft. La durée de vie assez courte malgré son prix raisonnable (14,99€) pose problème, au même titre que les temps de chargement, beaucoup trop longs. On regrettera aussi les quelques bugs dans le gameplay ainsi que quelques fonctions un peu inutiles. Malgré tout, le plaisir de jeu est présent et la difficulté se montre bien plus accessible qu’à l’origine. Graphiquement, l’univers de Shadow of the Beast se voit rendre un vibrant hommage. Et voir Aarbron en haute définition, ça a quand même une sacrée gueule, il faut bien le dire ! Alors si vous savez à quoi vous attendre, si vous êtes fan de la licence et si vous avez quelques deniers à dépenser, vous devriez passez un bon (mais court) moment !

Es spricht nicht unbedingt für die Neuinterpretation von Shadow of the Beast, wenn ich die gelungenen Bonus-Inhalte rund um den Amiga-Klassiker und den damit verbundenen Fan-Service als wertvoller erachte als das eigentliche Spiel. Aber was bleibt mir auch anderes übrig? Zwar hat das Remake dank des komplexeren Kampfsystems und einer größeren Einbindung der Hintergrundgeschichte mehr zu bieten als früher, doch zum einen serviert man im Gegensatz zum Original nur technisches Mittelmaß und zum anderen sorgt die träge Steuerung dafür, dass sowohl die öden Schnetzeleien als auch die nervigen Geschicklichkeitspassagen schnell an Reiz verlieren. Wie soll man da die nötige Motivation aufbringen, um all den durchaus relevanten Kram mühsam freizuschalten oder sich auf die Suche nach weiteren Story-Fragmenten zu begeben? Vielleicht wäre es in diesem Fall einfach besser gewesen, die alte Marke in Frieden ruhen zu lassen. An den Klassiker wird man sich noch lange als technischen Meilenstein der Amiga-Ära erinnern, während diese mäßige und belanglose Neuinterpretation sicher bald in Vergessenheit geraten wird.

Hoe goed het jagen op high scores ook voelt, toch werkt de game ook hier zichzelf tegen. Van de zeven beschikbare levels vallen er al twee af voor meerdere playthroughs. De eerste wereld is meer een inleiding en is daarom niet zo intere ant om vaker te doorlopen. Het laatste level bestaat slechts uit één frustrerende eindbaas, die het genre van de game opeens verandert naar een shooter. De vijf overgebleven mi ies bieden genoeg uitdaging, maar zijn gek genoeg niet echt ontworpen als een score-attack-game. Er zitten hele stukken in waar je alleen rechtdoor loopt. Ook zijn er goed verstopte gevechten die je wel nodig hebt om de maximale score te halen, maar die veel tijd kosten om te vinden. Als je voor een hoge score gaat wil je levels steeds opnieuw spelen, op zoek naar perfectie. Dan wil je niet elke keer dit soort stukken doorlopen die juist de vaart uit het spel halen. Al deze minpunten tellen op en resulteren in een teleurstellende ervaring. Dat is ontzettend jammer, vooral omdat het duidelijk is dat er met veel liefde aan deze remake is gewerkt. De game ziet er prachtig uit en zit vol verwijzingen naar het origineel, inclusief de geweldige boxart van die eerste game. Het is donker, rauw en bloederig, precies zoals je hoopt bij een duistere game als deze. Het moet echter ook leuk zijn om te spelen, en dat is helaas niet gelukt.
