Alone in the Dark Alone in the Dark non è sicuramente un titolo perfetto ma rappresenta, senza alcuna ombra di dubbio, un brillante lavoro di (ri)contestualizzazione del classico horror di sopravvivenza (pur mantenendosi fedele allo spirito dell'originale), caratterizzato da una splendida ambientazione degli anni '20. In una alternanza fra un intrigante racconto poliziesco e un horror totale, siamo stati letteralmente rapiti dal gioco di Pieces Interactive e THQ Nordic. Sebbene l'esplorazione sia la colonna portante della produzione svedese, con tanti elementi da analizzare e comprendere per risolvere i vari enigmi disseminati lungo il percorso, così come oggetti collezionabili, trattandosi anche di un gioco survival horror, il combattimento è comunque ben presente. Peccato per lo shooting system un po' deficitario che non da quel giusto feeling, per una IA non proprio al passo con i tempi e qualche lieve incertezza tecnica. In definitiva Alone in The Dark è una splendida ed imperfetta avventura horror/esoterica, psicologica e poliziesca che omaggia al meglio - grazie anche ad un cast di primordine - la visione di Frédérick Raynal. In conclusione, Alone in the Dark è un'esperienza di gioco intensa che catturerà l'attenzione dei fan, in primis quelli che ricordano la serie sin dagli albori, specie per la sua atmosfera angosciante. Le sfide e gli enigmi offrono una varietà di ostacoli intriganti da superare, mentre l'ambientazione cupa e la colonna sonora suggestiva contribuiscono a creare un'esperienza immersiva nel terrore. Peccato per i valori produttivi rivolti verso il basso, visto che tecnicamente non parliamo di un gioco proprio allo stato dell'arte (oltre ad alcuni bug qua e là). Ad ogni modo, il nuovo Alone in the Dark è sicuramente un titolo da tenere in considerazione, come rilancio di un franchise storico.

La profonda stima per la serie originale di Alone in the Dark ha alimentato aspettative considerevoli, che sono state in parte onorate. Il gioco si afferma come un tributo ai pilastri del genere survival horror, riuscendo a riscattare il marchio dopo alcuni episodi meno riusciti. Pieces Interactive ha optato per una strategia conservativa, scegliendo di perfezionare piuttosto che rivoluzionare, portando una fresca maestria agli elementi classici del genere. A dispetto di alcuni intoppi tecnici e un sistema di combattimento che potrebbe beneficiare di maggiore fluidità, questi non offuscano l’esperienza complessiva, che rimane solida sotto il profilo della narrazione, dell’atmosfera e, in modo particolare, dell’accompagnamento sonoro. Questi punti di forza conferiscono al gioco un fascino che risuona con gli appassionati del genere e dimostrano che, anche se ci sono margini per ulteriori miglioramenti, Alone in the Dark mantiene il suo posto come un’esperienza narrativa coinvolgente e un’avventura acustica memorabile. La dedizione degli sviluppatori nel preservare l’essenza del brand è evidente, e c’è la speranza che futuri aggiornamenti possano affinare ulteriormente i suoi spigoli più grezzi.

Malgré quelques couacs et une construction finalement assez classique inhérente à un reboot d'un titre lui-même classique, Alone In The Dark n’en reste pas moins un jeu qu’on aime sillonner. L’ambiance est franchement au rendez-vous tout au long de l’intrigue, et le rythme de complétion des énigmes ainsi que la progression sont très bien gérées. S’il ne pourra évidemment pas prétendre au titre de Jeu de l’année, on le conseille aisément aux fans de la première heure qui apprécieront cette nouvelle vision, aux aficionados de survival-horror à la Resident Evil, mais aussi aux novices à la recherche d’une bonne porte d’entrée pour le genre.

Alone in the Dark is the best entry in the franchise in over two decades, although there wasn’t much competition for that title. So-so combat, technical issues, and a frustrating lack of consistency sometimes cast a shadow over the game, and yet, there’s still something enticing here. The game’s intricately-designed Derceto Manor hub, thick Lovecraftian atmosphere, and surprisingly-varied level design ought to be enough to light a spark of enthusiasm in some hardcore survival horror fans’ dark hearts.

Alone in the Dark est de retour avec un remake qui reprend les intrigues du premier opus. Un projet modeste, avec un jeu AA bien loin des moyens et des ambitions d'un survival-horror AAA. Et pourtant, ce remake d'Alone in the Dark parvient à nous offrir une aventure sympathique, avec de bonnes idées. Non sans défaut, le titre parvient à nous offrir l'essentiel : une aventure angoissante, avec une très bonne ambiance fidèle au jeu original. Un bon moment garantie pour les fans de la licence et du genre.

Jeu d'aventure et d'ambiance avant tout, Alone in the Dark arrive malheureusement après un Alan Wake 2 qui a redéfini les attentes du genre. Agréable à arpenter, mais un peu déjà vu, déjà joué.

Jeu d’aventure-action lovecraftien à l’ancienne plutôt que Survival Horror frénétique, Alone in the Dark se permet une ré-imagination intéressante des épisodes fondateurs. La nostalgie se heurte malheureusement à la désuétude : même le fan hardcore de la licence aura du mal à passer outre des systèmes trop archaïques. Nous aurions apprécié que, libéré des chaînes des AAA aux budgets faramineux et du besoin de faire obligatoirement mieux que ses concurrents, le titre de Pieces Interactive tente plus de choses, fasse différemment, s’autorise une certaine radicalité. Il n’en est rien. Une aventure avec un grand “AA”, imparfaite dans son fond comme sa forme, mais sincère dans tout ce qu’elle entreprend.

Alone in the Dark è un gioco che avrebbe meritato di più se fosse stato maggiormente curato in termini di pulizia generale. Si può arrivare senza grossi problemi fino alla fine con tutti e due i personaggi ma nel mezzo, soprattutto giocando con Edward Carnby, si incappa in bug e glitch che si sarebbero potuti evitare - questo senza considerare la questione dei finali e dei collezionabili che si resettano a caso. A livello di gameplay è buono, ma paga la ripetitività dovuta a un'unica ambientazione, mentre per quanto riguarda la narrativa non c'è pressoché nulla da criticare: le atmosfere sono al loro posto, la rielaborazione di fatti e personaggi è valida, più chiara ed elaborata giocando con Emily che con Edward, e nonostante verso la fine si scolli un po' rimane ben costruita soprattutto nella differenziazione tra i protagonisti. Ci sono filmati dedicati e dialoghi sempre diversi, a riprova della cura infusa in questo aspetto; se fosse stato così anche e soprattutto in termini di pulizia, il gioco avrebbe potuto ambire a una valutazione più alta.

There are too many flaws at the heart of Pieces Interactive's Alone in the Dark reboot for a blanket recommendation, but anyone with a love for classic survival horror gameplay should — after a few post-launch patches at least — find a relatively worthwhile experience. The combat sections are awful and there's very little to actually spook you, but the puzzle-solving gameplay at the game's core shines. For that alone, it'll find just enough of an audience ready and willing to love it.

Like a Louisiana voodoo priestess, Alone in the Dark is not without its charms, but its basic combat lacks the flexibility and function of Resident Evil 4, its inventive narrative is never as mind-bending as Alan Wake II, its uninspired creature design can’t compete with Dead Space, and it’s not nearly as scary as any of them. Its central mystery intrigued me enough to lure me through its strand of imaginative settings all the way to its story’s end as Edward, and its puzzle design did feel consistently rewarding, but I was disappointed to discover that there wasn’t a substantial enough difference to make a repeat playthrough as Emily feel particularly worthwhile. While this remake is undoubtedly a step up from the three-decades-old original, Alone in the Dark fails to escape the shadows of the other contemporary survival horror titans that it helped spawn.

Alone in the Dark (the franchise) being the progenitor for so much of what we love in survival horror, only to find itself afflicted by its own kind of curse in the decades following its initial success is genuinely tragic. This latest iteration comes closer than its predecessors to claiming a seat back at the table but its inability to conceive of an identity beyond contemporary mechanics and well-worn tropes leaves it wanting. There’s a version of Alone in the Dark 2024 that found a way to lean into its absurdist concepts and performances but self-seriousness and a lack of focus makes for a game fumbling for the lights. Slap the boards back over the windows of Derceto, maybe we can open it up again in another thirty years.

Alone in the Dark quiere ser muchas cosas, pero no termina de centrarse en hacer bien ninguna. Su premisa, aunque poco original, puede resultar interesante, pero logra despistar al jugador entre sus vaivenes oníricos y sus dudas sobre qué tipo de "terror" quiere ser. El combate no es nada del otro mundo y su cantidad de puzles puede llegar a exasperar. Se salva por su ambientación, pero más allá de eso no he terminado de encontrar razones de peso para traer a la luz esta querida franquicia, que creo que va a seguir en la oscuridad mucho tiempo.

À sa sortie en 1992, Alone in the Dark était considéré comme une révolution. Un jeu fondateur du survival horror qui a permis, entre autres, à Resident Evil d’exister. La mise en chantier d’un remake était donc parfaitement légitime en soi, mais à l’arrivée, c’est la déception et un rendez-vous clairement manqué. Cette nouvelle version ne parvient absolument pas à se hisser au niveau des standards actuels, même vis-à-vis de jeux indés, et échoue sur beaucoup trop de points. Si l’on apprécie que cette lourdeur soit conservée, les combats comme d’autres séquences manquent de finition. L’ambiance générale de film noir, avec cette musique doom jazz, est séduisante, mais sous-exploitée. Et de l’autre côté, il y a beaucoup trop de soucis de mise en scène, de narration et une absence de moments réellement marquants. Il en résulte une aventure assez plate tout du long, voire fade, pour un titre qui ne vous fera ni ressentir de peur, ni de tension, mais probablement de l’ennui. Le maître a été bien rattrapé par son disciple et s’est fait dépasser. Le premier raté de 2024.
