To call South of Midnight a ‘perfect’ Game Pass title would be disrespectful because the reality is that our industry has become obsessed with bloated experiences, and it’s led us to believe that anything less isn’t worth paying for – at least at full price. The truth though, is that we need more creatives being just that, and South of Midnight is part of Xbox’s supposed plans to let its developers cook. We just have to hope that the kitchen doesn’t close when service is over, because we need developers like Compulsion Games to make games like South of Midnight – shorter experiences that tell new and exciting stories set in immersive worlds, even if the gameplay feels familiar, because nothing beats a good story.

Pour peu qu'on ne se lasse pas d'un système de combat qui peine à se renouveler au bout de quelques heures, South of Midnight est un titre très agréable à parcourir. Entre des décors imprégnés de la culture cajun et des thèmes musicaux capables de nous transporter, le titre de Compulsion Games réalise un sans-faute côté ambiance, tout en parvenant à apporter suffisamment de variété dans ses phases de gameplay. Même si tout n'est pas parfait, South of Midnight se pose comme le titre le plus abouti du studio canadien à ce jour, et ne manquera pas de satisfaire les joueurs à la recherche d'un titre à la fois bien raconté, et bien rythmé.

South of Midnight est une véritable plongée dans les mystères de la Louisiane. Si vous aimez les heroines fortes et débrouillards, alors vous adorerez les heures passées au côtés de Hazel. Si techniquement parlant le jeu aurait pu bénéficier de quelques améliorations, on ne peut que féliciter le studio pour avoir réussi à nous immerger dans un conte enchanteur à la saveur des épices cajun.

South of Midnight has a good story, and is a good action adventure game. It may get a little repetitive at times, but the story keeps you in enough to keep playing. I gave it all the time I could, and maybe it deserves another playthrough, since I walked away asking more questions then I started with. I only need to hear the music once though, I guarantee.

It’s focused, filling out its 12-hour runtime nicely without ever dragging or relying on unnecessary padding. Beyond those basics, however, is a certain heart and artistry that elevates the whole package, inviting you to peer into the deep American South through its folklore, nature, and culture. It might not be the most profound exploration of family life, but it’s delivered in ways that feel authentic. From its striking art style to the evocative tunes that bring big story moments together, Hazel’s journey is a captivating one no matter where you come from.

Il nuovo lavoro di Compulsion Games mette in scena una moderna favola in stop-motion dai toni oscuri, che attinge dal fascino misterioso (e spesso tragico) del folklore del Profondo Sud degli Stati Uniti. La certosina cura riposta nella presentazione artistica (un plauso enorme alla meravigliosa colonna sonora) tuttavia non trova una realizzazione altrettanto scrupolosa nell'impianto ludico. Sebbene la struttura lineare sia rassicurante ed accogliente, purtroppo il titolo non decide mai di esplorarne tutte le potenzialità lasciando spesso con l'amaro in bocca. Al netto dei propri limiti, South of Midnight è un'esperienza ricca e significativa che merita di trovare un piccolo spazio nei cuori dei videogiocatori. South of Midnight, tirando le somme, si presenta all'appuntamento coi giocatori come il più convenzionale degli action/adventure, imperniato su una struttura ludica gradevole, per quanto piuttosto ripetitiva, e sorretto da una scrittura raffinata e da direzione artistica di prim'ordine. È un peccato che la presenza di qualche ingenuità sul fronte del design non gli consenta di raggiungere vette d'eccellenza, specie se si considera la cura infusa nell'imbastire una cornice audiovisiva di questo calibro. Più forma che sostanza, dunque, ma se siete alla ricerca di un buon titolo in cui investire una decina di ore di spensieratezza, magari lasciandovi trasportare da una storia capace di toccare le corde dell'animo, allora la nuova opera di Compulsion Games potrebbe fare al caso vostro.

Pour ma part, j'ai été complètement absorbé par South of Midnight, probablement en raison de l'affinité personnelle forte que j'ai avec le style, l'atmosphère et les sujets abordés dans l'histoire. Néanmoins, c'est ici que le titre a montré ses premières faiblesses. Il ne va malheureusement pas plus loin que la surface des thématiques, pourtant profondes et pouvant être riches d'enseignements pour un public potentiellement touché. Le jeu reste plaisant, voire plus, pour ceux qui ne sont pas complètement sensibles ou connaisseurs du cheminement psychologique et/ou social lié aux traumas, et plus précisément dans le prisme de l'enfance. Sorti de ce cadre, nous sommes face à un titre au gameplay standard, voire banal, et à un bestiaire qui aurait mérité bien plus d'attention. C'est toutefois grâce à sa direction artistique que le titre pourra vous captiver de bout en bout, avec un rendu en stop motion magistral, un doublage splendide (en VO) et une bande originale qui a de fortes chances de s'installer dans de nombreuses playlists à l'avenir.

Premier bébé de Compulsion Games sous l’aile de Microsoft, South of Midnight nous offre une aventure plaisante, bénéficiant d’une direction artistique qui se démarque de l’industrie avec un style particulier, mais pour autant très joli et la présence de stop-motion apportant un vrai cachet. L’ensemble est magnifié par une sublime bande son et son originalité dans sa façon de se dévoiler. En revanche, on regrette une structure assez répétitive et des mécaniques de gameplay aussi bien dans l’exploration que dans les combats bien trop conventionnelles. Ce n’est pas pour autant mauvais, mais on aurait souhaité en voir un peu plus.

Car, derrière la claque artistique, qui s’apprécie autant avec les yeux que les oreilles, la déception est totale. South of Midnight s’appuie fébrilement sur un gameplay bancal et daté, dont les quelques idées ne sont jamais exploitées comme il se doit. C’est terriblement dommage et frustrant, tant South of Midnight donne envie que son univers si élégamment mis en avant soit davantage soutenu par une expérience de jeu plus convaincante. South of Minight se lit, se voit, s’entend. Mais, il ne se joue pas.

South of Midnight me ha dejado con sentimientos encontrados. No esperaba una superproducción, pero sí algo realmente cautivador. Sin embargo, pese a su belleza visual, no logra brillar en su diseño jugable. La estructura es monótona. La exploración, limitada. En lo que más se centra tampoco deslumbra. Las plataformas son básicas y el combate en arenas es poco más que funcional. Aunque su universo, inspirado en mitos del sureste estadounidense, es fascinante y único, la historia principal se ve opacada por personajes secundarios que diluyen el enfoque narrativo, lo que termina haciendo que Hazel, la protagonista, a veces parezca más un testigo que un personaje central. Visualmente, el juego es impresionante, eso sí, y la banda sonora me ha parecido exquisita. No deja de ser un juego disfrutable, pero que podría haber sido mucho más si hubiera equilibrado su belleza con una mejor narrativa, estructura y mecánicas.
