In a genre that's overrun with sequels and lame attempts at horror, The Suffering is a breath of fresh death rattle. The action is intense, the creatures are actually creepy, and the story does not shy away from truly macabre elements. One cannot say enough about the horrific world that's been created here. Everywhere you look, every little thing you do, has been placed there to ratchet up the suspense and put you in an eerie state of mind. Technically, the game is fairly sound aside from a couple of crashes and some weird graphical errors, but beyond that, something else comes through. These guys know how to scare people, and they're committed to doing so. They've done their homework and applied it to yield an impressive work of terror. If you're looking to be scared, The Suffering may just hold your interest until the next DOOM hits this year.

A stellar and mood-defining sound environment, excellent voice work, gorgeous lighting, and a slow-to-build but page-turning story fuel Deadly Shadows to great effect, and it's also fairly long and involved, although there is no multiplayer or modding tools to extend the life of the product. And I know multiplayer could work, as a Thief-styled Unreal 2003 mod proved, where one side was the thieves and the others played the guards, like the MP in Pandora Tomorrow. However, concessions will be made to both get the game out the door in polished form, and to do so for the PC and Xbox. Ion definitely seems to have learned from the issues it encountered in Invisible War and added a highly respectable addition to the Thief series that, while not boldly innovating, holds the franchise bar at least as high. If the environments had been bigger, the thieving missions gradually more complex and challenging, and the story a little quicker to get moving, I'd have little to really complain about. As long as someone can craft a place like Shalebridge Cradle, I'm pretty much a happy camper.

It's hard sometimes to get past your preconceptions about what a game ought to be, particularly a game that uses such a well-loved and unique brand. Sadly, fans of the Larry franchise will find that the actual gameplay in Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude is disappointing. The overall marketing also seems to suggest that gamers who aren't as familiar with the series may be disappointed to find that the game doesn't deliver the sticky sex-romps that they may have expected. As an adventure or puzzle game, Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude falls short. It merely offers a jumble of the reaction-tests found in games like Space Channel 5, Tapper or Whack-a-Mole. The titillating moments certainly deserve some credit for helping maintain your interest here, but it's the game's humor that's the real star and, ultimately, the only reason to keep playing once the allure of polygonal boobies has worn thin.

I gave warning that we¿d wrack up coverage of an impressive series of flaws while reviewing Beyond Divinity; and so we have. But at the same time, most of them can be fixed or tweaked. Given Larian¿s record in this respect with Divine Divinity, I would expect the game to be pretty airtight in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, the results are certainly highly playable and extremely enjoyable with reservations noted. This is an entertaining and challenging RPG, with less of an emphasis on finger-twitching than thought. I¿m willing to cut any developer some slack if they try to do more than clone than previous product. Larian has clearly gone a lot farther. If the game balance had matched the creativity and attention to overall design put into this title, I would probably have given it a 90%, because the detail of construction and depth of the environment are truly excellent. But with this many unresolved issues, Beyond Divinity gets an 80%. That¿s still a strong endorsement and hopefully a prod in the fundament to companies that think bugs are an insect gamers pay you to spray.

If you’re a hardcore soccer fan, this game is a decent addition to the pantheon of EA footie offerings. Although it doesn’t share the scope of regular old FIFA, it’ll keep you warm until a new one ships next year. If you can’t spare the dough, though, you’re not going to be missing much you haven’t already played. That’s what makes this game tough to judge… it’s not really for the casual, and definitely not for anyone who wants to play as a team from any of the other six continents.

Vicarious Visions' side-scrolling designs continue to evolve throughout the Game Boy Advance's life, and for Shrek 2 the team has created a decent, though younger-skewed, game that lifts a lot from The Lost Vikings. Graphically, the game's an absolute treat, especially for those who dig the artstyle of the film. Challenge-wise, though, there's not much here to call the game "difficult." It's a fun, easy game to breeze through in a few hours, with a handful of taxing elements put in there for those perfectionist who appreciate a bit of replay value, and want to beat the game's challenges 100%.
