It’s been a while since I played a sci-fi RPG like this, and it reminded me of Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey. I appreciated the colorful characters and unique enemies, but the level design leaves something to be desired. Worse options could be chosen these days, and while it’s not for everyone, fans of the genre looking for something new on their Vita should check it out.

Instead, the title expects players to understand and learn its intricacies on its own terms. Confronting this creature is gratifying, but do so with prudence, lest you’ll find yourself alone and aimless within this fearsome abyss.

Operation Abyss: New Tokyo Legacy brings an originally Japanese exclusive PC series to a whole new group of gamers on PS Vita. In tandem with the equipment variety, the rather simplistic gameplay makes for an incredibly addicting experience that is perfectly suited for a portable system. The game does feel overly complicated in some ways at times though and as a result can be a difficult entry point for newcomers to the genre, but fans of the dungeon crawling genre can find a fairly unique first-person experience in Operation Abyss: New Tokyo Legacy.

Operation Abyss: New Tokyo Legacy is a fine DRPG. It has all the facets one would expect from a game of its genre and manages to implement those features effectively. What it does not do a lot of, however, is think outside the box in big ways. This is a cookie-cutter dungeon-crawling experience, the likes of which we've already seen many times before. Of course, it makes for an extremely accessible game because of this, and is quite possibly one of the best entry-points for newbies. While its level of polish may indeed be phenomenal -- thanks to the strongest presentation values perhaps ever seen in the genre -- it still never finds a way to surpass its rivals from a mechanics standpoint. Had it been comprised of a combat system that empowered the player rather than strip them of certain tactical decisions, incorporated more monster and environment variety and had better overall pacing, it would have easily superseded Experience's previous Vita DRPG Demon Gaze.

Moins accessible qu'un Demon Gaze, Operation Abyss : New Tokyo Legacy opère des choix de gameplay étonnants qui ne rendent pas l'expérience de jeu aussi plaisante qu'on pouvait l'espérer. Parfois inutilement complexe, fastidieux sur le plan de l'ergonomie et avare en indications, le soft comporte heureusement d'autres aspects à faire valoir, comme son contexte narratif original, son challenge relevé et sa customisation des personnages assez poussée. A réserver aux plus mordus du genre.

Operation Babel : New Tokyo Legacy est un Dungeon Crawler très classique, et la suite directe d'Operation Abyss. Le titre nous propose d'arpenter moult dangereux couloirs emplis de monstres et de pièges, à la recherche frénétique d'un nouvel équipement. Certains choix dans les mécaniques de jeu rendent Operation Babel difficile (comme l'obligation de rentrer à la base pour passer des niveaux, ou encore les coffres piégés), mais l'ensemble se montre être au final un RPG très complet dans tout ce qui concerne les compétences, combats, équipement, craft, magie... De quoi répondre à toutes les situations ! Tout comme la partie visuelle du titre, qui propose deux types de design différents pour composer les héros de votre team. De quoi véritablement attirer la rétine, même si la concurrence n'est pas en reste de ce point de vue là. Operation Babel est donc un bon représentant de son genre, mais plutôt destiné aux vieux briscards de l'exploration case par case.
