L'inserimento di elementi strutturali innovativi in uno shoot 'em up è un'operazione rischiosa, ma Steredenn: Binary Stars riesce in questo delicato intervento proponendo un'alternativa molto valida alle classiche meccaniche. La costruzione random dei livelli funziona particolarmente bene di concerto con la meccanica roguelike che prevede il ripartire da zero a ogni game over ma con la consapevolezza di qualche progresso da portarsi dietro in termini di conoscenze e bonus sbloccati. Ne viene fuori uno sparatutto che è sì punitivo e a volte frustrante, ma che risulta difficile mollare grazie anche alle partite brevi e frequenti che ne possono scaturire, vere e proprie fiammate di gameplay classico a ripetizione.

Tales Of Hearts R is an attempt to localize a game that fans of the series have been clamoring for. However, the lack of an English voice track does sour the experience a little. If you are able to look past this you will find yourself enjoying a deep RPG that is full of adventure and exploration. Despite a few issues, Tales of Hearts R wholeheartedly lives up to the pedigree of the Tales franchise, while remaining playable in a convenient portable experience.

Killing Floor 2’s concept remains simple, but the development team has polished it to a point where it’s always exciting. The attention to detail featured here is rivaled by few other games, and the fantastic maps, weapons and characters offer the needed variety to keep things fresh for a long time. The original Killing Floor still has a loyal following to this day despite its age, but Killing Floor 2 has just made it obsolete.

Overwatch has been polished to a high sheen by Blizzard. There are a handful of nits to pick, as mentioned above, but everything comes together in an extraordinary fashion when it could have just as easily been a mess of half-baked ideas.

As a long time fan of the MH series, I’m pleasantly surprised with Monster Hunter: World. I assumed this game would be dumbed-down to oblivion, but I was wrong: Capcom pulled it off. It’s fluid, many mechanics are intuitive and it endeavors to explain the ones that aren’t. It takes the best of Monster Hunter and offers them in a way that entices newcomers without repulsing long-time fans. The only gripe I had were the lack of areas and amount of monsters — both of which will likely be remedied with confirmed DLC, making it a minor gripe about an otherwise excellent package. If you’re a fan of the series then World is a must-buy. And for everyone else? Pick it up anyway.

Ever Oasis is a perfect blend of management simulator and action-RPG. Despite being on a handheld, this deep RPG’s stylish presentation and many gameplay systems come together in a way that few games do.

Tariser has come a long way from the bubbly world of LittleBigPlanet with the dark and disgusting world of Little Nightmares. What it lacks in gamplay substance is made up for in visual and audio design. If that’s a trade-off you’re worth making, then Little Nightmares is a decent entry for the genre.

Making a game that stands out from the rest of the crowd can be rather difficult, and while Hue definitely draws inspiration from other games, the overall experience is well worth the time. The adventure starts off at a slower pace as the colors are gradually introduced, but as the gameplay picks up the deeper you get into the game with well designed puzzles, all accompanied by a fantastic instrumental score, Hue really shines bright as an example of a puzzle platformer done right.

Risen 3: Titan Lords is an old-school RPG that will appeal to only the hardcore Risen/Gothic community. For the rest, this last-gen offering is one that will likely fly under the radar. And given that well-executed freedom of exploration and passable combat barely balance out the handful of negative aspects, this is one experience that can wait for a price drop.

Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition is easily the definitive version of the game, and if you’ve never picked up the game previously then now is the perfect time to jump on board. Its fantastic Skillshot system and unique weapons make it still feel fresh six years later, and People Can Fly have done a great job touching it up for modern hardware. The previous issues still apply, but overall it’s a stylish FPS that fans of the genre looking for something outside of the box should enjoy.

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite is a game of two extremes, featuring the franchise’s strongest gameplay to date, while presenting visuals worse than any entry to come before it. That said, the Vs. series has always been more about the gameplay than anything else, so even with all of Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite’s shortcomings, its gameplay is so strong that it helps you overlook them. Long story short, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite ain’t pretty, but it get’s the job done.

Fable Fortune has some novel ideas that put a new spin on gameplay that’s familiar to CCG fans. Its good/evil upgrade system shows a lot of potential, though its selection of cards needs to grow into it before it can really pay off. Overall, compared to its competitors Fable Fortune is lacking polish and some basic features, and its gameplay is a little more linear. But it does have The Dog and all the other characters and humour that made Fable special, and that makes it a fun way to dive back into a treasured series.

Alien: Isolation brilliantly recreates the world of Ridley Scott's 1979 classic while offering some fantastic survival-horror gameplay. A few issues crop up over the course of the game, but not enough to damage the overall experience.

God Eater Resurrection may not be a must-have game, but seeing that its genre isn’t over-saturated allows it to stand firmly on its own. Going on a hunt with a team of human or AI allies is a blast most of the time, and there’s plenty of equipment to tinker around with to keep the sense of progression steady. Whether you’re returning from the PSP game or are just looking for a new Monster Hunter-esque fix, this game will definitely scratch the hunting itch for you.
