X-Men: Destiny for the Nintendo DS yields no rewards for the player whatsoever. The deeper you make it into the game, the more broken it seems. With shallow, boring gameplay complimenting an incoherent story and terrible graphics, there’s just no reason to subject yourself to a game this bad.

For fans of the franchise, Atelier Totori is a complete success. It improves upon Atelier Rorona in almost every conceivable way and delivers all of the gameplay, art style, characterizations and special brand of cuteness that the series' fans have come to expect. The item synthesis, for which the Atelier name is known, is as good here as it has ever been, and plenty of the series' staple characters return, making long time players feel right at home. But for newcomers, the time management element combined with the anime/moé aesthetic can be alienating and in the case of the story, possibly deal breaking. That said, if you can weather the storm of ham-handed after-school special caliber character interactions the game constantly hurls at you, there is a fun, addictive, worthwhile RPG experience to be had here.

Is Rugby Challenge the better of this year’s two rugby union games? Absolutely. On the field they’re quite similarly flawed, but Rugby Challenge has more modes, more depth, and more scope to circumvent the licensing minefield. It has better visuals and better overall presentation. It has multiplayer support for up to eight players online (up to four local players can connect and play up to four opponents using two consoles). There are tutorials. Jonah Lomu is in it. It has the haka. Crucially, Rugby Challenge feels more like the best game one could realistically make for the kind of budget presumably afforded to Wayne Rooney’s FIFA 12 hair plugs. It’s an imperfect experience but if you’re going to buy one rugby title this year,

Orcs Must Die embellishes your devious side, encouraging you to devise clever ways of fulfilling the command of the title. For the not-so-clever, mowing down invaders with an automatic crossbow is also a great time. Whatever your approach, an orc's pain is your gain. You must download, because Orcs Must Die.

Tetris: Axis has a lot going for it. With over 20 modes - some amazing, some admittedly lame - you won’t want for things to do with this collection. Unfortunately, Tetris is a game that’s so readily available in various forms with various new modes that it takes more than that to make a new version feel worthwhile. Axis’ presentation just plain doesn’t stack up to other versions on the market - most notable Tetris DS - and the uninspired use of Miis comes off as more lazy than fun. Still, especially since it’s being sold for a bargain price, Axis makes for a solid addition to any 3DS library.

Rage proves a lot of what we already knew about id Software. The studio knows how to make great shooters and deliver incredible visuals and animations. With some of the elements we’re not as familiar with in id games like an emphasis on story, Rage isn’t as strong. The great controls and useful weapon upgrades help make Rage’s shooting parts a lot of fun, but the storyline fails to create any real tension and the game’s characters, friendly and hostile, never do or say anything memorable. As a result, Rage starts to drag toward the second half after most of the mechanics and upgrades are introduced because the fictional world isn’t very interesting. Despite the lack of genuinely exciting context, all the content packed into Rage is still a blast to play, including the surprisingly entertaining car combat mode and co-operative challenges. Rage isn’t revolutionary, but is an expertly crafted, beautiful shooter.

That this is the definitive version of NBA Jam is undeniable: it plays better, looks better and lasts better than any of the previous games in the series' history. The fact that it's a mere $14.99 USD only makes it an even more irresistible proposition – you couldn't get more bang for your bucks outside of a halftime fireworks show in Milwaukee. Just how On Fire is it? To return to the analogy that opened this review: this Jam is so hot that if you were to spread it on bread it would turn it into toast. Buy it.

While the game was billed as an “action-RPG”, calling it that would be a gross overstatement. Sure, it satisfies a few terms of similarity, but even with an upgrade system thrown in and some hidden collectibles, this is very much a straightforward action game with extremely light RPG features (not much more than you’d find in, say, God of War). Even for an action brawler, this one is as mindless as they come.

FIFA 3DS is a surprisingly rich title for a handheld console. It’s perfect for a quick game on tiresome commutes. The career mode lacks the some of the depth required to keep you engaged for longer gaming sessions. Its visuals are impressive, and it tries its best to take advantage of the 3DS unique features. The Pro camera position in 3D, in particular, puts you right in the centre of a football match, and can’t be replicated in quite the same way on any other console.

The reviewer's job is difficult when it comes to a game like Dark Souls. I simply can't unreservedly recommend that you buy it. It's not a game that you play to relax. It doesn't care in the slightest about whether you're enjoying yourself, and it doesn't give a fig for your notions of entertainment or your mental well-being. If you just play games for fun, this isn't for you, and no amount of insistence on my part is going to change that. But if you're interested in the limits of the videogame form – to see just how focused, how pure and how uncompromising in its vision a game can be – Dark Souls is unmissable. If you take the time get into Dark Souls' mindset, to begin to understand the twisted way in which it operates and taste the rewards behind its cruellest challenges, this is one of the most thrilling, most fascinating and most completely absorbing experiences in gaming. No sports game has ever made me this excited to play. Seriously it's all I've been able to think about for the last week. The realistic, challenging, gorgeously animated gameplay carries across a cornucopia of modes. Playing legends of the past, the stars of today, and my own personal NBA rookie are all different flavors of f#$%ing rad. Any one of these modes would be reason enough to purchase the game, but all of them together make for a game that any basketball fan has to pick up.

FIFA on the Wii is a perfectly passable football game, if somewhat insubstantial. It pales in comparison with its console peers, but then most games would. It’s caught between the aspiration of being a realistic football sim and the frankly more fun ambition of being an escapist football fantasy where you can score 40-yard wonder goals with ease.

There have been many 2D Castlevania games in recent years and they're all rather similar, so I applaud developer Konami for trying something new. Harmony of Despair is quite enjoyable when you have a posse backing you up. But I'd have to say this Castlevania experiment is only a modest success and there is definitely room for improvement. The focus on multiplayer came at the cost of the single-player experience. With so little of the game explained, some players may find themselves confused or, worse, frustrated. And because assets seem to have been plucked straight from previous games, that $15 price tag is questionable. But, Castlevania fans will definitely have fun with Harmony of Despair. It's basically a six-player time attack mode with all your favorite characters, and there isn't anything else quite like it on PlayStation Network. If Konami ironed out the kinks, a follow-up to this could be really great.

By offering some solid graphical upgrades to bring the collection up to par with the current gen a la Halo Anniversary, Ubisoft could’ve offered Splinter Cell fans a great look at the series’ roots. Unfortunately, we’ve instead been treated to a slapdash production with lousy visuals and no multiplayer.

Solatorobo is slow to get going, and neither the combat nor the puzzles are ever anything more than mildly challenging. But it's a true original, beautiful to look at, lovingly made, characterful and always ready to surprise you with some mad, bizarre new idea. In a world where almost every game is something we've seen before, there's a lot to love about it.
