When you combine engaging and unique gameplay with Swarm’s pleasant (but dark) aesthetics and whimsical nature, what you have is a great downloadable game. There’s a good deal of content here, and it’s all nestled in a polished package. I like games that give you compelling reasons to go back and figure out new and more ingenious ways of getting through various obstacles, and Swarm nails that. Once you get through any level, you won’t be done with it, and that’s pretty cool.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 3D makes a strong debut on the 3DS, and of all the launch titles available it puts forward one of the strongest arguments for Nintendo’s brave new vision of the future. It’s a couple of features short of being a classic, but its compelling game of football has found a comfortable home on the handheld. It suggests that greater things are to come from this relationship, but there’s enough here to keep players going until then.

Naruto Shippuden: Kizuna Drive is a better adventure than many past Naruto games have been, and its focus on highlighting the four-man teams featured in the show is unique and novel. The game is at its best when you can take full advantage of its multiplayer feature, fielding a full force of four to fight together. If you'd only be able to play by your lonesome, though, you might consider one of the other many different Naruto adaptations instead.

We've been doing this dance for more than a decade. If PopCap can keep up with this kind of constant creative spark then I'll be on the hook indefinitely. Bejeweled 3 is such a thoroughly enjoyable puzzle game that earlier versions are almost irrelevant. What it lacks in precise controls -- a recurring and unavoidable theme on consoles -- it makes up for with its nearly bottomless bucket of fun to-do. Bejeweled 3 has plenty of exciting and original ways to swap gems and match threes. It manages this in such an elegant way that you'll learn new ways to think about and play Bejeweled from here on out.

Porting a 360/PS3 fighting game to a portable comes with a cost. Capcom has attempted to minimize these sacrifices as much as possible. In some cases the changes actually improve the experience. The addition of the touch controls, in particular Lite mode, will open up Street Fighter to a whole new audience. Plus being able to execute fireballs with one button is a lot of fun. In other cases, these changes are for the worse – once you notice the static backgrounds, you’ll have trouble looking away. But all in all, this is a great game. It’s not only the best launch game for the Nintendo 3DS, but will certainly be regarded as a great purchase for years to come.

I want to like PlayStation Move Heroes. It's killing me that it kind of sucks. The appeal of some of my favorite video game characters ever doesn’t outweigh that this is a boring mini-game collection with spotty controls. A decent story could have saved me from disappointment, but PlayStation Move Heroes doesn't even have that. I can’t even recommend this game as an easy Trophy game. Unless you're desperate for a new Move title, or to see your heroes slum it, just skip it.

I'm an admitted Ghostbusters fanboy, but I just can't recommend Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime. For the most part, the game is just boring with lackluster gameplay and reused environments, and then it gets frustrating. Toss in issues I didn't even mention such as unresponsive weapons and repetitive music, and I know I wouldn't want to suit up for this one.

It says a lot that -- despite one or two bugs that caused me to restart a level, as well as a host of individual mechanics that aren’t particularly noteworthy -- I still enjoyed LEGO Star Wars III. The atmosphere is downright adorable, and the use of the license is excellent. Most importantly, though, the various types of gameplay that the developers have thrown together may not be all that amazing on their own, but the elements work together to create a well-paced, easy-to-understand game that is good fun for anyone. If you’ve been looking for a game to play with your kid (or a game to let your inner kid play), look no further.

The new goals – freeing birds and shattering monkeys – offer a nice reprieve from the bird-pig narrative, and the forgiving learning curve makes this a much better play than the punishing Angry Birds Seasons. While the magic of the first Angry Birds – and its hundreds of stages – may not be eclipsed here, Angry Birds Rio is well worth playing for any devout fan or younger gamer.

Steel Diver is well executed, but lacking in depth (which is ironic for a multitude of reasons). However, once you give it a fair shot, you'll be surprised how addictive the gameplay is and how much fun you’ll have trying to master the controls and conquer each mission. It's not exactly the side scroller we were expecting from Nintendo's first party 3DS launch, and it really, should not have been $40, but it's a commendably unique and engaging concept. If you're dying for something to play with your launch day 3DS, and you have an open mind and a bit of patience, this might be just what the doctor ordered. But if you're holding out for fireworks, your money would be better spent elsewhere.

It all conspires to make a bike racing game that, as a package, is the very best there’s been for years. Rival outfit Milestone’s SBK game may still have the slightest of edges when it comes to the handling, but it hasn’t the depth of progression, the accessibility or the all-important licence that MotoGP 10/11 has. It’s one of the most exciting series in motorsport, and this year it’s got a game to do it justice.

Jikandia puts us in control of how long it takes to complete a level, but it doesn't give us a reason to stay any longer than we have to. This could have been a treat for retro gamers, but the dull action and stingy rewards make it more of a cheap trick.

I wanted to like Slam Bolt Scrappers a lot more than I actually did. I really dig the core concept for the game, and it’s clear to me that developer Fire Hose Games threw its all into trying to make a compelling product for PlayStation 3 gamers. But Slam Bolt Scappers requires a lot of learning, and moreover, the lack of online play in a game that seems to be a no-brainer online offering is outright inexcusable. Single-player may keep you busy for a while, but the second you explore any multiplayer options, I bet you’ll be as sorry as I was. It will likely sour you on the whole experience, and make you question why you spent $15 on a game that... well... isn’t worth $15.

Now that I think about it, maybe it's fitting that Hard Corps: Uprising resists using the Contra name. It's definitely classic Contra, but at the same time feels new and exciting. Rising Mode is a genius way to keep you returning to levels even after you've beaten the game. If you've ever been into Contra or Metal Slug or action movies, Hard Corps: Uprising is for you.

If you don't own a PS3, then MLB 2K11 is your only choice in baseball video games. It's not a bad baseball game, and has certainly made some improvements. Pitching and hitting are both fun, and the My Player mode has been expanded on to make it more accessible and engrossing. The glitches are fewer, but still noticeable, and the game does make some graphical improvements, though the game engine is looking tired. As cliché and tired as it sounds, I look forward to seeing what 2K sports brings next year.
