As far as RPG titles go on the Game Boy, Dragon Warrior Monsters definitely tops the list, just missing Pokemon by a whisker. The randomization of levels as well as the Monster Breeding option is more than enough to justify picking this title up. It's an excellent adventure with only a few spelling mistakes (bad Eidos for mixing "it's" for "its"), but the world doesn't seem as well established as the whole Pokeuniverse. Still, second best ain't bad.

I do suggest you check this game out, mainly because it boasts a lot of originality, two difficulty modes, and a fair number of enjoyable missions. But the control problems, lack of balance and repetitive gameplay will turn off the majority of gamers spoiled by games like GoldenEye or Metal Gear. Even with its flaws, I'm glad Infogrames/Ocean finally finished the project and got it out the door (I'm sure the game's programmers are, too). Let's hope that the follow-up title will be designed from scratch, with all new technology and engines -- but retains the same level of originality. A good, challenging rental (especially on its "Impossible" difficulty setting) for one player.

Highly recommended purchase, especially considering the title's low price-tag of only $49. With beautiful graphics, tight control and excellent sound, the only thing keeping Mortal Kombat 4 from a perfect score is its aged fighting system. The closest thing to a perfect arcade port we've seen in a long, long while. Hats off to Eurocom for the job. Best Nintendo 64 fighter so far.
