Though High on Life takes a bit of time to get the ball rolling and lacks some enemy variety, it's a comical adventure with an excellent opening and finale, and promises plenty of other surprises in store for players.

High on Life is an irreverent, absurd shooter that manages to shine with its outrageous humor, silly setting and story, and some really goofy, foul-mouthed guns that pull the whole thing together for the vast majority of the time. Combat is a bit sloppy, especially during the first act, and the whole sci-fi adventure sometimes has an unpolished feel to it, but once you get some new tools of destruction and movement options, it rises to the occasion. Not all of its jokes find their punchline, but with memorable boss fights, unique alt-fire abilities and exploration, and way more terrible movies to watch than I expected, this wacky journey is definitely worth your time.

High on Life ne va pas réinventer la formule des FPS, mais son côté déjanté, comique et trash apporte un véritable vent de fraicheur. J’ai pris plaisir à dézinguer nombreux ennemis, rencontrer les boss et parcourir ce titre qui reste très agréable à regarder, de plus même si les dialogues peuvent parfois être longs, ils sont toujours entrecoupés de réplique ou scènes qui cassent et relance le rythme. Et bon sang qu’il est plaisant de revoir un titre qui ne fait pas dans le politiquement correct en mettant un humour bien crade en avant. Un dernier point, il existe une fin alternative et vue la tournure, un second opus pourrait voir le jour, ce n’est pas pour me déplaire. Attendez, mais étiez vous au courant ? High on Life è un prodotto che sa mantenere le promesse. Sotto una scorza fatta di battute eccessive e umorismo sopra le righe, c’è un’ironia pungente nei confronti di un genere, quello degli FPS classici, che ha fin troppi cliché da prendere in giro (e qui non se ne dimentica neppure uno per la strada). Il level design fin troppo caotico, unito a degli scontri con i boss non esattamente esaltanti, rischia a tratti di far passare in secondo piano i pregi del gioco di Squanch Games, ma una buona somma di meccaniche di gioco riesce a tenere tutto a galla, in attesa della successiva battuta e della conseguente risata. Peccato che l’accessibilità, per un pubblico non esattamente padrone della lingua inglese, sia tutt’altro che ottima; per quanto infatti i dialoghi principali siano tutti comprensibili, si rischia di perdere per strada alcune delle freddure più divertenti, lanciate con finta casualità in mezzo all’azione.

High On Life è uno sparatutto imperfetto, una gemma grezza che non brilla certo per il design del suo gameplay, ma che invece si rivela straordinariamente prezioso per la sua capacità di far sorridere genuinamente il giocatore dall'inizio alla fine dell'avventura, una cosa che ormai capita di rado nei videogiochi. Certo, i problemi ci sono e Squanch Games dovrà saper imparare dagli errori commessi ora che è arrivata a vedersela coi grandi, ma che splendido futuro aspetta i fan di Justin Roiland. Alla prima produzione realmente importante lo studio è riuscito a catturare la curiosità di tantissimi giocatori, e adesso ha tutto il tempo per crescere ed evolvere in direzione di un secondo capitolo ancora più folle e sregolato.

High On Life est un FPS de comédie qui brille par sa bonne humeur et la qualité de son écriture. Si l’histoire est volontairement clichée et ne vous marquera pas au-delà des quelques rires qu’elle pourra déclencher, la partie combat aurait largement gagné à être nettement moins longue. Le jeu étant très verbeux avec les armes et les personnages qui parlent constamment, il est aussi regrettable qu’on n’ait pas droit à une version française doublée car si vous ne comprenez pas l’anglais, il sera difficile de capter toutes les vannes lancées en pleine action. Et passer à coté de l’humour de High On Life, c’est un peu passer à côté de tout le jeu…

High On Life si propone come uno sparatutto in soggettiva vecchio stampo, pieno di humor nero e volgarità senza censure, e con uno stile che solo il creatore di Rick and Morty sarebbe stato in grado di aggiungere. Ergo, i puristi del genere degli shooter in soggettiva, cresciuti a pane e BioShock, probabilmente storceranno il naso e non troveranno sufficienti motivazioni per non stargli alla larga. Tutti gli altri possono invece trovarsi a tu per tu con uno dei giochi più folli e irriverenti del 2022.

Le créateur de Rick and Morty ne pouvait pas pondre un jeu vidéo comme les autres. Reposant sur un humour doux amer, High On Life n’est pas à montrer à tous. Cela tombe bien, il n’a pas la prétention d’être universel. Apprécier ce FPS coloré, c’est d’abord se coltiner une tonne de dialogues tous plus invraisemblables les uns que les autres. Rien n’est vraiment pertinent dans High On Life, sauf le sentiment de vivre un trip sous acide. On peut donc décider de détester High On Life et son absurdité assumée. Ou louer une fois encore le talent de Justin Roiland, qui offre ici un terrain de jeu digne d’une cour de récréation pour adultes. Bonne nouvelle : il y a quand même un vrai jeu vidéo derrière, c’est-à-dire pourvu d’un gameplay suffisamment travaillé qui évite que High On Life ne vive que par ses gags potaches.

High On Life combines sloppy shooter action with Justin Roiland and all of his pals being incredibly annoying. You're either going to love it or hate it, really, so it's lucky this one's hitting Game Pass so you can check it out and decide for yourselves. Personally, this reviewer hated the humour, there's something very off and deeply troubling at the heart of where this game is coming from, it feels as though it's looking down, sneering and hateful. But that's the comedy style it's going for so we guess we need to relax, bro. Some people are going to eat this stuff up, regardless of what we think, so it's a shame that it ties this sneering attitude to bland gameplay, tired puzzles, dumb AI and a world that just isn't fun to explore or inhabit in any way. Dude. That is harsh.
