The Silver Case was a seminal example of an incredibly influential game creator’s early days while he is finding his creative footing. It still remains a flawed, but genius, masterwork. The 25th Ward: The Silver Case manages to fix some of those flaws, keep others and introduce whole new ones. In the end, The 25th Ward takes the edge as it is a less clumsy, more playable experience even if it could be argued that the quality level is a wash. This is a fantastic experience for people who enjoy Suda51, visual novels or finding out of context quotes to annoy friends.

Suda51 produces some of the most wonderfully enigmatic titles around. The 25th Ward: The Silver Case shows the auteur challenging convention early on, predicting a career defined by peculiarity. Sure, there are some elements that feel dated or clunky, but there’s still much of The 25th Ward that feels fresh.

The 25th Ward: The Silver Case offers another bit of insight into SUDA51's insane creativity, this time completely rebuilding a mobile phone title into the same framework as that of The Silver Case. While it doesn't quite have the same revelations of The Silver Case, there's still some rough charm left in the aftermath of Kamui Uehara.

Una perla grezza, insomma, che qualcuno, specie chi ha giocato il titolo precedente su PSX o via remaster, dovrà e vorrà recuperare. Tutti gli altri, specie gli allergici alla lingua d’Albione, passino pure oltre senza rimpianti. Il buon impianto narrativo, il carisma di protagonisti e cattivi, lo stile accattivante proprio dell’universo di gioco restano elementi validi, ma non basteranno a convincere chi non mastica visual novel e neppure chi cerca maggiore libertà e varietà da un videogioco. Nulla di cui crucciarsi: non è scritto su nessuna pietra che le cose belle, specie quelle vecchie, possano davvero essere tali per chiunque.

Comme pour son prédécesseur, qui nous paraissait il y a quelques mois, The 25th Ward : The Silver Case ne s’adresse pas à grand monde, et écarte d’emblée tous ceux qui ne maîtrisent pas la langue de Shakespeare sur le bout des doigts. Pour les autres, il faudra composer avec des mécaniques de gameplay inintéressantes et redondantes, un aspect visuel particulièrement austère, et une bande son sympathique mais souvent trop sobre. Heureusement, le titre de Grasshopper Manufacture est sauvé par son ambiance oppressante très réussie, et surtout son scénario captivant.

The Silver Case non è un titolo facile. Non solo, e semplicemente, perché appartiene a un genere già di per sé di nicchia come la visual novel, ma anche perché si affida a una narrazione sì intrigante, ma che richiede impegno e particolare attenzione per essere seguita (il titolo, per la cronaca, non è localizzato in italiano ma solo in inglese). Un racconto impervio e spesso confuso e sopra le righe, quasi d'avanguardia, in pieno stile Suda51. A ciò si aggiungono sessioni esplorative tutt'altro che user-friendly. Lo stile, l'atmosfera jappo-noir e l'inventiva di Suda51 riescono parzialmente a ovviare ad alcuni limiti intrinseci, dovuti anche all'età del gioco (sono pur sempre passati 18 anni dalla prima pubblicazione su PlayStation!). Rimane tuttavia forte l'impressione che sia un gioco che renderà felici solo i fan dell'autore giapponese (e gli storici).

Nanti d'une approche unique, The Silver Case est un titre honorable. Très "old school" dans son esprit, il souffre finalement des mêmes errances qu'à son époque. Mais en 2017, ces dernières prennent encore plus d'importance. Si l'absence de voix est préjudiciable, il faut aussi se contenter de la traduction anglaise, d'un gameplay peu inspiré et de longueurs parfois inutiles. Par contre, si vous arrivez à mettre de côté ces défauts, il n'y a pas de doute, vous passerez un bon moment grâce au scénario, aux personnages et à la mise en scène.
