Layers of Fear is an incredible, mind-bending horror game. The gorgeous environments are both detailed and terrifying, and the story will captivate you as you work to unravel all the threads. What it lacks in polish it makes up for in how obsessed you’ll become with finishing the masterpiece.

Layers of Fear entführt euch in einen Alptraum, in dem man zunehmend seinen Verstand verliert! Dieser Horror-Trip überrascht immer wieder mit verstörenden Situationen, erschreckt mit clever platzierten Schockeffekten und zeigt eine surreale Welt des Grauens. Das Bedrohungsgefühl ist zunächst enorm, aber man vermisst irgendwann Konsequenzen. Die vermeintliche Gefahr entpuppt sich zu schnell als Illusion und man weiß, dass man um sein virtuelles Leben nicht bangen muss. Zusammen mit den kaum vorhandenen Rätseln und der mitunter mühseligen Suche nach Hinweisen lässt der Angst-Faktor zu früh zu wünschen übrig. So ist es in erster Linie den einfallsreichen Psycho-Spielchen in Kombination mit der gelungenen audiovisuellen Präsentation zu verdanken, dass dieser Abstieg in den Wahnsinn doch noch bis zum Ende gut unterhalten kann. Auf den Konsolen muss man allerdings eine schwächelnde Unity-Engine sowie weitere technische Abstriche in Kauf nehmen, die sich leicht auf die Wertung auswirken.

Layers of Fear è un bel horror game che ha il solo difetto di durare poco (mettete in conto un massimo di tre ore). Qualche enigma in più inoltre avrebbe permesso al gioco di guadagnare ulteriori punti, ma per il resto se cercate una bella atmosfera, squarci visionari, un ambiente di gioco da incubo e una narrazione intelligente che si dipana stanza dopo stanza avete trovato il gioco che fa per voi.

Una de las propuestas de terror más interesantes de los últimos tiempos. Layers of Fear recuerda a numerosos lanzamientos similares, pero a la vez recurre a mecánicas nuevas y aterradoras que atraparán a los que estén deseando pegar algún respingo sobre su silla. Su desarrollo peca de reiterativo en la última parte de esta aventura de 4-5 horas de duración, pero lo compensa ofreciendo una rejugabilidad inesperada y una factura audiovisual que ralla a un nivel casi impropio de sus orígenes humildes e independientes.

Layers of Fear est une excellente pioche de part l'expérience qu'il vous fera subir. Loin des principes vidéoludiques auxquels on est habitué, l'immersion proposée ici est telle que l'on ne peut tourner le dos à un tel jeu. C'est de l'art, salasse, malveillant, mais ô combien plaisant auquel vous aurez accès ici. On regrettera le manque d'enjeu toutefois, mais tout cela n'est rien à comparer du plongeon que vous vivrez dans les méandres psychédéliques de ce peintre fou.

Layers of Fear almost feels like two different games smashed together to make up a single experience. Its first half is brutally chilling, deeply frightening and an overall success. Its unique use of perspective and camera manipulation, though derivative, evokes a sense of dread so powerful that it becomes frightening to even turn on your gaming device to play it. It quickly becomes apparent about halfway through, however, that its power lies in a reliance on simple jump scares and the impact of themes that are disturbing in any context. Bloober Team should feel proud that it was able to turn its fortunes around with Layers of Fear and this release is something to build upon, but it manages to miss the mark just enough to feel somewhat forgettable. Those who have experienced the Early Access release have likely seen all there is to see here, as its ending feels too flat to create a true sense of endearment. If you’re looking for something to scare you for an hour or two on a dark night, then this is a title you should consider picking up. If you’re looking for the next great horror title, however, your efforts will be better served elsewhere.

Si os gustó Layers of Fear, esta expansión Inheritance es un buen cierre para la historia de esta pobre familia. Tiene en esencia todo lo bueno y malo del original, pero condensado en un paquete menor a un precio bastante asequible de unos 5 euros. Si no os gustó el original o no os convenció en exceso al ser más walking simulator que título de terror, este DLC no os hará cambiar de opinión. Si por el contrario os gustó, tendréis más escenarios de locura, una gran ambientación y una historia atractiva pero que podría haber sido contada mejor.

Layers of Fear lacks the surprises and subtlety needed to keep things interesting all the way through. It makes a strong first impression, but quickly exhausts its best ideas, making it hard for them to really shine as scary or meaningful moments. It’s hard to be terrified when you can see what’s coming at the end of every long dark hallway.
