Considering the efforts passionate fans went through to see this franchise have another entry, it comes off as surprising and unfortunate that Wayforward did not decide to take more risks by adding new characters and mechanics. By taking the product as what it is and not what it should be, however, Shantae: Half-Genie Hero ends up as one of this year’s strongest platformers, packed to the brim with secrets, clever writing and a stellar soundtrack. While the repetitiveness of revisiting levels can drag down the experience at times, Shantae fans and platforming fans alike shouldn’t miss out on the half-genie’s newest adventure.

Shantae: Half-Genie Hero is a highly familiar, yet fresh take on 2D platforming, and the results are a game I can easily imagine scaled down to 16-bit on a Sega Genesis. A nostalgia hound for the 90s will find a lot to love with this game, from the gameplay down to the look, feel, and story it presents. Far from perfect, but charming beyond its expectations, Shantae: Half-Genie Hero is wonderfully fun.

Wayforward's heroine has come a long way from her GameBoy beginnings, and she's still got some great adventures in her yet. The gameplay is on point, and the visuals are top notch. The experience is a little on the short side, but fun throughout.

Half-Genie Hero is a prime example of a Kickstarter-funded game that actually lived up to the excitement it generated, rather than disappointing fans and the general public with an unimpressive product that we could have simply gone on living without. It’s a game that’s clearly a labor of love, as evidence has shown each Shantae game has been, and WayForward’s passion for their work is something they wear on their sleeves. Shantae: Half-Genie Hero is a splendid 2D Platformer packed with enough charm and new ideas to make the 6-7 hours it will take to beat it worth every second of gameplay and every dollar spent. Judging it solely on what content is present at the moment, and ignoring, for now, the promises of what’s to come, Shantae: Half-Genie Hero is worth your time and money if you’re looking for a great 2D platformer — or just a fun game in general.

Shantae : Half-Genie Hero condense tout le savoir-faire de WayForward Technologies en termes de jeu d’action/plates-formes 2D. Il offre un gameplay agréable et varié qui marie les genres avec réussite, sans pour autant se transformer en fourre-tout indigeste. Les transformations sont nombreuses et il est impossible de s’ennuyer. Mais c’est son design général qui remporte la palme, avec une héroïne charismatique, des animations bluffantes et un style qui semble tout droit sortie d’un dessin-animé. Un voyage certes court, mais dont on apprécie chaque moment.

En conclusion, Shantae : Half-Genie Hero est un très bon titre, qui respecte les codes et les bases de sa propre série, et parvient à saupoudrer le tout d’une pincée de fraîcheur bienvenue. Gameplay solide et augmenté grâce aux transformations animales, level-design très bon et surtout pertinent envers lesdites transformations, et une direction artistique de haute volée, qui embarque et envoûte comme on peut en attendre d’un Shantae de nos jours. Techniquement nerveux, il faut bien avouer qu’il ne prend pas trop de risques et se contente d’améliorer une recette déjà connue, mais il a au moins le mérite de ne pas se planter sur ce point !

Shantae : Half-Genie Hero relève de l’anti-design. Dans ce jeu, la fonction semble suivre la forme et ça ne se ressent que trop bien. Le jeu ne se révèle intéressant et prenant que par bribe et une fois l’ébahissement devant les très jolis décors passés, on ne peut que se rendre à l’évidence : cette manie qu’a le jeu à vouloir absolument nous faire refaire ad nauseam les mêmes niveaux est frustrante. Cache-misère du petit nombre de niveaux ? Fausse bonne idée de concept entérinée trop tôt dans le projet sans réelle remise en question ? On ne saura sans doute jamais. Ce qui est sûr, c’est que cette jolie direction artistique et cette jouabilité maîtrisée auraient très bien pu s’accommoder d’un bien meilleur jeu. Shantae :Half-Genie Hero ne porte que trop bien son nom : à moitié génial et à moitié raté.
