New Gundam Breaker trasporta perfettamente nelle atmosfere della serie animata in cui si combatte usando i gunpla, coi suoi personaggi bizzarri, i modellini super dettagliati e gli scontri caotici. Il problema è che non fa molto altro, e tolta la confezione colorata, quel che resta è un action un po' scolorito. Alla pochezza di modalità offline e online, contrasta la cura maniacale nel riprodurre i piccoli robot, oltre che la loro quantità smisurata. Solo per i fan più sfegatati della creatura di Tomino, anzi, dei suoi modellini.

The Gundam Breaker series finally hit the West, but it couldn't have done it in a worse way. New Gundam Breaker is not a bad game at all, but the many issues, such as low mission variety, performance issue, and mediocre story mode, outweigh its best features, mainly the huge amount of Gunpla models and the vast customization possibilities that come with it.

Per quanto il prodotto possa vantare un editor appagante e sconfinato, capace di realizzare i sogni proibiti di qualsiasi appassionato di GUNPLA, New Gundam Breaker risulta, più che un nuovo inizio, un netto passo indietro, se paragonato al suo predecessore. Mentre avremmo potuto chiudere un occhio (o tutti e due, a seconda dei punti di vista) sulla componente dating sim proposta dal comparto narrativo, la scelta di trasformare le frenetiche missioni della serie in gare competitive anche piuttosto ripetitive, ci è parsa scellerata e incomprensibile. A ragion veduta, questo New Gundam Breaker potrebbe non soddisfare le aspettative dei fan occidentali che, con l’uscita del titolo, speravano di poter provare finalmente le meccaniche che in Asia sono valse alla serie un successo straordinario. Consigliato quindi unicamente ai più sfegatati fan del leggendario Mobile Suit bianco.

Non è chiaro cosa Bandai Namco volesse ottenere con questo New Gundam Breaker: in qualità di esordio internazionale della saga, il gioco non fa nulla per sottolineare tutte le caratteristiche implementate e raffinate con ogni interazione ma, anzi, riesce a compiere svariati passi indietro in termini di giocabilità, ingarbugliando eccessivamente l’accettabile sviluppo rettilineo delle missioni e semplificando all’opposto alcuni connotati che hanno reso Gundam Breaker 3 un successo clamoroso sia per gli amanti di Gundam e dell’animazione robotica giapponese che per quanti adorano gli hack ‘n’ slash in generale. Se volete cimentarvi in un simulatore di battaglie fra modellini che garantisca ore di divertimento, il mio consiglio è quello di rivolgervi proprio al terzo episodio di Gundam Breaker, soprattutto considerato che la versione asiatica è dotata di sottotitoli in inglese. La mia unica speranza è che l’editore non recepisca l’inevitabile stroncatura commerciale come un segnale del disinteresse del pubblico oltreoceano nei confronti della serie, perché New Gundam Breaker riesce a dimostrare soltanto una frazione delle sue reali potenzialità.

È chiaro che le problematiche descritte rovinano un'esperienza che, di fatto, si riduce a un grind ripetitivo di missioni per sbloccare i vari Gunpla. Purtroppo New Gundam Breaker non offre praticamente alcuna alternativa in termini contenutistici: la modalità multigiocatore consente di giocare delle battaglie generiche in rete insieme e contro altri giocatori, quindi non resta che dedicarsi alle missioni già completate. Raramente ci è capitato di imbatterci in un titolo che offre così poco e così male sul fronte del gameplay: l'idea era ottima, l'esecuzione lascia veramente a desiderare.

Between fumbling through the menus, mashing your way to a choppy and exceedingly easy victory, and clicking through meandering dialogue scenes that hold no weight, you’ll find yourself too bored to actually collect all the parts you want to make your perfect Gundam. If you’re itching to fight big robots, play Gundam Versus instead. Or, go punch that actual Gundam in Japan (don’t do that).
