Skylanders SuperChargers is hands-down one of the best kid-friendly games on the market, and the most complete realization of the “toys to life” genre to date. The variety of platforming and kart-based gameplay holds charm for gamers of all ages, and while you’ll need to buy more vehicles to access the game’s full spectrum of content, there’s more value to be had in both the toys and the game this time around.

Ogni anno mi domando cosa si inventeranno Activision e Vicarious Visions per rinfrescare le avventure di Skylanders, e ogni anno mi ritrovo a muovere oggetti su un portale con la velocità di un croupier di Las Vegas. L’introduzione dei mezzi è stata fatta con intelligenza, senza snaturare le caratteristiche portanti di un gioco che è sempre stato basato su una formula ben precisa e funzionale, ma capace comunque di dare un po’ di varietà a una formula che rischiava di cominciare a ripetersi. Fa sempre piacere, inoltre, capire come gli sviluppatori non dimentichino chi ha investito molto nella serie, negli anni passati: le trappole, gli oggetti speciali e, soprattutto, gli Skylanders già posseduti possono ancora essere usati, anche se in alcuni casi un modo meno importante rispetto al passato. Tecnicamente bellissimo, divertente da giocare e sufficientemente vario per rinnovare la sua formula senza snaturarla… un nuovo Skylanders, insomma.

As unlikely as it seems for a franchise in its fifth iteration, Skylanders is a series which continues to improve. While Superchargers vehicular addition seems unexceptional, the new feature amps up the energy level, ensuring that Stealth Elf and company elude stagnancy once again.

Skylanders SuperChargers è un momento importante per il franchise, così come lo fu Swap Force che introdusse la meccanica del salto: in questo caso, Vicarious Visions ha voluto rimettere mano ad una formula di gioco che rischiava di giungere ad una fase di stanca rinfrescandola grazie ai veicoli. Le sezioni a bordo di mezzi di terra, aria o acqua donano una varietà finora sconosciuta alla serie e sebbene non sempre funzioni tutto in maniera perfetta, il risultato finale è comunque estremamente apprezzabile. Probabilmente non convincerà tutto il popolo dei fan di Skylanders, ma SuperChargers è un episodio per certi versi innovativo e coraggioso, e probabilmente ad oggi il migliore della serie Activision.

Skylanders Superchargers conferma l’ottimo livello qualitativo raggiunto dalla serie di Activision. L’introduzione dei veicoli riesce ad aggiungere quella freschezza di cui un brand a cadenza annuale ha bisogno senza però snaturare il gioco e anzi aggiungendoci ancora più varietà. Skylanders Superchargers è quindi un prodotto molto curato e divertente che riesce a catturare i più piccoli e perché no i loro genitori che vogliono accompagnarli in un viaggio nelle Skylands.

Cuando parecía comenzar a dar signos de agotamiento, la franquicia Skylanders ha sabido reinventarse a sí misma con el añadido de los nuevos vehículos. En el modo historia siguen funcionando mejor las secciones a pie que las de vehículos, pero se compensa con los jefes finales y sus distintas maneras de afrontarlos. Las misiones adicionales son sencillamente las mejores de toda la serie y las carreras pueden ser extremadamente divertidas. Además, el hecho de que sea compatible con la totalidad de los juguetes anteriores no hace sino aumentar año tras año la sensación de satisfacción por una colección cada vez más útil. Sigue siendo un producto a un precio prohibitivo para tener la colección completa, pero al menos en esta ocasión será menos discriminatorio para alcanzar el 100%.

Adding three different and fun vehicles and extremely creative level designs to the series’ simple but reliably enjoyable action platforming gives Skylanders SuperChargers a healthy boost. Every level has you switching between approaches based on the vehicle you’re piloting, which is great for variety. That said, both the story and the approaches to boss fights are very predictable, and some things - like vehicle customization - are overly-simplified, even considering the young target audience.

Skylanders may have more competition in the toys-to-life space than ever, but the series is showing no signs of slowing down. The figures required for the full experience is much lower in Skylanders Superchargers thankfully, though the racing portions do take a hit in that department. The story is still not the most compelling, but the addition of vehicle-based gameplay sections has kicked the series into overdrive with Skylanders Superchargers.

Activision and Vicarious Visions have seemingly done the impossible by keeping Skylanders fresh for its fifth outing. SuperChargers is jam-packed with enough content to fill at least two separate games and it’s all quality stuff. The platforming is as strong as ever and the kart racing is some of the best to come along in years. More still, there are enough mini-games, side-quests and collectibles peppered throughout the experience to result in an almost endless playtime. From top to bottom, SuperChargers is clearly a labor of love and fully deserves the countless hours that people of all ages will be addicted to it.

Ajouter trois véhicules différents et amusants, ainsi que des niveaux extrêmement bien construits, simples et vraiment appréciables permet à Skylanders SuperChargers d’être un véritable bol d’air frais. Chaque niveau vous oblige à tenter différentes approches selon le véhicule que vous pilotez, ce qui ajoute en prime une certaine variété. Cela dit, l’histoire ainsi que la manière dont vous gérez les combats de boss sont très prévisibles, et certaines choses – comme la personnalisation des voitures – sont trop simplifiées, même si on prend en considération l’âge de la communauté à laquelle le jeu s’adresse.

Pas de doute : avec SuperChargers, les Skylanders restent encore cette année une valeur sûre en matière de jouets connectés, puisque la présence de véhicules relance grandement l’intérêt. Même s’il faut reconnaître qu’il est toujours aussi frustrant que désagréable de devoir sortir le porte-monnaie pour avoir le droit d’accéder à l’intégralité d’un jeu déjà acheté au prix fort. Cela dit, dans l’absolu, pas besoin de débourser un centime de plus car il est possible de terminer intégralement l’aventure principale avec le contenu du pack de démarrage. Et puis le grand nombre de missions, mini jeux (Skystones Turbo…) et défis/courses en véhicules, accessibles en solo ou multi, garantissent tout de même une bonne durée de vie. De plus, hormis une musique assez insignifiante, l’esthétique générale apparaît très satisfaisante et le gameplay plutôt diversifié. De quoi donc passer de joyeuses fêtes de fin d’année en famille…
