Cyber Connect 2's Ninja Storm series is somewhat of a known entity at this point. The developer not only creates a gorgeous replication of the popular Naruto series, it knows how to treat the characters and their stories with respect. In some ways these games capture the essence of the manga better than the anime adaptations do - and they do it while allowing players to create epic battles of their own. The different approach to the single-player story works well, and though it retreads a lot of familiar ground, it never feels like it's wasting time, maintaining a constant focus on Naruto and Sasuke. Subtle changes to the mechanics continue to add layers to the combat, and while this isn't the most nuanced fighter, that's not necessarily a problem - for the most part. Fans of Naruto are no doubt going to pick up Generations, but what's more important is that showing this game to non-Naruto fans will make them understand what makes this franchise so beloved. Hidden below the crazy, numerous battles are some very moving stories about kids trying to find their way in the world - and how their elders struggle to raise and protect them. The heart of the Naruto franchise is stunningly sincere - and somehow this game finds those points and shines a spotlight on them. Powerful stuff indeed, particularly if you just walk into this looking for a casual, addicting fighting game with great graphics - which also describes Generations perfectly.

Si CyberConnect2 s'était contenté de peaufiner sa copie en optimisant le gameplay, le nombre de personnages et les combats en ligne, ce titre aurait été réellement excellent. Mais en supprimant toute la partie exploration libre et les combats de boss qui faisaient le charme du précédent volet, le développeur risque de laisser sur la touche un grand nombre de fans. Ceux qui recherchent avant tout une aventure solo parfaitement scénarisée lui préféreront donc clairement Ninja Storm 2. Les autres plébisciteront Ninja Storm Generations pour son panel de combattants monstrueux, son système de combat optimisé et les multiples variantes qu'il propose en matches libre et online.

Während Narutos zweites Storm-Abenteuer eine in fast allen Belangen konsequente Verbesserung des bereits sehr gelungenen Vorgängers darstellte, markiert Teil drei trotz kräftig aufgebohrter Charakterriege einen klaren Rückschritt: Statt einer großen, zusammenhängenden Story werden jetzt ein knappes Dutzend Kurzgeschichten erzählt, die kaum Substanz haben und oft schon nach zwei bis drei Kämpfen vorbei sind. Auf eine frei begehbare Spielwelt wurde dieses Mal sogar komplett verzichtet, ebenso wie auf jegliche Nebenaufgaben. Selbst unverkennbare Highlights wie die spektakulär inszenierten Bosskämpfe wurden ersatzlos gestrichen. Lediglich der Mehrspielermodus hat dank neuer Turnier- und Online-Funktionen tatsächlich mehr zu bieten als früher. Dadurch kann sich der strauchelnde Ninja gerade noch ein knapp gutes Niveau bewahren – verglichen mit seinen Vorgängern ist das aber natürlich enttäuschend…

The complaints are minor in Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations making this one of the best versions of the fighter. The pick up and play 3D fighter is easy to learn, hard to master, and beautiful throughout.
