As someone who left the series several years ago, I didn’t expect to enjoy my time with Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings, but I gave it a shot and had a ball. This game exceeded my expectations and I rediscovered why I fell in love with this series in the first place: the story was enjoyable, the characters were entertaining and the gameplay was solid. Yes, the lack of characters and inconsistent translation were frustrating, but I finally understand why people who played an imported copy were hyping it up: this game is good, great even. I’m very happy I gave this game a shot and if you’re a fan of niche JRPGs (or the Atelier series), you should too.

Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings is the kind of game that’s best played when one just wants to sit back and relax for a while. Its lack of urgency combined with its liberal use of bright colors, upbeat musical tones and exceedingly optimistic characters make for an experience that can’t help but inspire a faint smile. Combat is varied enough to keep the perpetual hunt for ingredients from becoming stale and the quest to craft the perfect item is enjoyable enough to make those hunts worthwhile. The Atelier series is celebrating its twentieth anniversary this year. This entry doesn’t do anything revolutionary in honor of that, but that might just be the point. It’s just more of what the series has always offered and has thus far succeeded with. Existing fans will enjoy this one just as much as previous entries in the series, and any interested newcomers will get a good idea of exactly what they’ve missed out on thus far.

Qualora siate arrivati al commento finale, avrete certamente compreso da soli perché Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings non possa essere considerato il miglior esponente della trilogia “misteriosa”. Certo, la qualità della narrazione, del sempre appagante sistema di crafting e del combat system rigorosamente a turni lo rendono un prodotto imprescindibile per chiunque si professi un appassionato di JRPG old-school, ma l’assenza di innovazione ed il passo indietro compiuto rispetto ad Atelier Firis hanno fatto sì che la produzione ne pagasse un pesante scotto. Augurandoci che il prossimo episodio reintroduca la componente open-world, supportandola magari con uno nuovo motore grafico, non possiamo che consigliarne l’acquisto ai fan della saga lanciata due anni fa con l’avvento della prorompente e pasticciona Sophie Neuenmuller.

Atelier Lydie & Suelle : The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings est, pour conclure, exactement ce qu’il doit être. Son scénario prévisible, couplé aux mécaniques du jeu, forment exactement ce qui est nécessaire pour avoir envie de revenir sur le jeu, et d’explorer ce monde un peu plus en profondeur. Cette prévisibilité n’entache pas la fonction de ce jeu, tuer le temps, se changer les idées. L’ambiance sonore et les caractéristiques propres de ce soft, plutôt aisé à prendre en main, font que vous passerez un agréable moment. Mais n’espérez pas vous y plonger durant cent heures, car vous finiriez déçu, cet opus n’offrant pas la quantité de contenu suffisante pour cela. A moins de passer par moult DLC plutôt coûteux. En fait, nous sommes simplement devant du Gust… et je crois que cela suffira pour ravir les fans.

Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings è il tipo di gioco che si apprezza meglio quando si vuole semplicemente sedersi e rilassarsi per un po’. La sua mancanza di urgenza combinata con l’uso di colori vivaci, toni musicali allegri e personaggi straordinariamente ottimisti lo rendono un’esperienza che non può fare a meno di strappare un sorriso. Il combattimento è abbastanza vario da impedire che la caccia agli ingredienti ristagni, mentre la ricerca di questi stessi ingredienti nel mondo di gioco sarebbe stata più piacevole se non fosse dipesa così tanto dall’ora del giorno e dalle condizioni meterologiche, a volte frustranti. Il suo pregio maggiore comunque è di essere un titolo da giocare quando si vuole staccare da trame complesse e salvataggi del mondo per trascorrere diverse ore in totale tranquillità: a volte è bello anche solo uccidere alcuni funghi dall’aria imbronciata e sintetizzare tutto l’oro liquido possibile, che tuttavia la presenza dell’alchimia svaluta sul mercato quando vogliamo venderlo. La serie Atelier celebra quest’anno il suo ventesimo anniversario e sebbene questo capitolo non sia poi così rivoluzionario, non necessariamente lo si deve vedere in chiave negativa: è poco più di ciò che la serie ha sempre offerto e va bene così. I fan esistenti lo apprezzeranno tanto quanto i titoli precedenti, mentre tutti i nuovi arrivati avranno una buona idea di ciò che si sono persi fino adesso.

Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings is a serviceable entry in the long-running JRPG series by Gust, offering an experience that's surely entertaining, but not as good as Atelier Firis. Additionally, the lack of any real innovation in both story and gameplay departments translates into a very predictable game.

Given how many incredible JRPGs the PS4 already has, this wouldn't even be near the top of my recommendations for the genre on the platform- but if you're looking for a nice, sweet game to relax with, you could do far worse than Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings.

Bien qu'assez prenant dans l'ensemble, Atelier Lydie & Suelle a la malchance d'arriver juste après un épisode aussi riche que révolutionnaire. Le manque de contenu sur bien des points de ce dernier épisode s'en ressent d'autant plus, et le retour en demi-teinte d'une aventure romancée n'y changera rien. L'avalanche de DLC tardifs confirme de manière cinglante le manque d'efforts ou de considération pour cet ultime jeu de la trilogie. On a certes toujours un système de jeu solide, de chouettes combats, de belles musiques… mais pour le jeu anniversaire des 20 ans de la série, on attendait ça plus festif.

If you really love crafting, Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemist and the Mysterious Paintings might be your jam. But if you like literally any other aspect of a typical JRPG, you’re going to be disappointed. It might be worth $20 for the curiosity, but at $60, I really can’t recommend it to anyone who doesn’t already like the series.
