Pokkén Tournament takes a lot of what we know from old fighting gaming favorites and sticks them into a blender, delivering a unique take on both Pokémon and on fighting games in general. Sometimes all those ingredients spill over a container that’s a little too full - there is a surprising amount to learn beyond the beginner’s level, and that may alienate some Pokémon fans without fighting game experience. Pokkén Tournament does do a good job, though, at alleviating this bloat of mechanics with single-player modes to help ease into the action.

Pokémon games are almost always a hit and Pokkén Tournament ranks up there with the best. It's a refreshing change of pace for the standard battling experience allowing us to literally go hands-on in combat. The action is quick, the attacks are expertly selected and the spirit of Pokémon is perfectly captured. There are millions of fans out there waiting to challenge you, so it's best you start your climb to the top as soon as possible. Pokkén Tournament is a victory and hopefully the beginning of a new series within the franchise.

Lo mejor de Pokkén Tournament es su accesibilidad y la rapidez y espectacularidad de los combates. La campaña es un mal necesario para desbloquear a todos los luchadores y pokémon de apoyo y hacer frente al online con todas las armas del arsenal. En el lado de los defectos habría que mencionar que dieciséis luchadores nos han sabido a demasiado poco y a que el sistema de combos es demasiado devastador: con dos encajados nuestra barra de vida será sólo una mancha roja en la pantalla.

Pokken Tournament è un sogno che si realizza per una buona fetta di appassionati del mondo dei Pokemon; una fantasia cullata per troppi anni, che oggi si tramuta in convincente realtà grazie agli sforzi sinergici di Nintendo e di Bandai Namco. Pokken Tournament ci ha sorpresi travolgendoci con un sistema di combattimento inaspettatamente profondo ed originale, che attinge dal materiale di riferimento con estrema consapevolezza, restituendo un picchiaduro che, pur non raggiungendo i tecnicismi di uno Street Fighter, richiede dedizione e impegno per poter essere completamente domato. Le buone impressioni proseguono grazie ad un roster criticabile per quantità di personaggi, ma che può vantare un livello di caratterizzazione dei singoli combattenti ottimo, affiancato da un bilanciamento complessivo molto equilibrato. Pokken Tournament è però un sogno di quelli interrotti sul più bello, come quando un parente distratto vi disturba irrompendo nella stanza: una sensazione di amaro in bocca dovuta ad un comparto combattenti con cui si poteva fare di più (il Pokédex ormai annovera ben 722 esemplari), all'assenza di sbloccabili di un certo peso e ad un ventaglio di modalità di gioco che pecca in varietà, e che difficilmente sosterrà sulla lunga distanza l'interesse di quegli utenti che non gradiscono la competizione online. Pokken Tournament è quindi un buon inizio, ed offre spunti che speriamo vengano ulteriormente sviluppati in futuro dalla casa di Kyoto, magari con un capitolo rivolto ad NX che sia ancor più ambizioso e variegato.

Pokkén Tournament rappresenta la più spettacolare espressione degli scontri tra Pokémon, dato che li concretizza con una dinamicità che finora abbiamo potuto vedere solo nei cartoni animati. Non si tratta di un picchiaduro perfetto, ma di un buon titolo "entry level" per chi si avvicina a questo genere: in questo senso, il suo più grande merito è proprio quello di attirare l'attenzione dei fan di Pokémon che non hanno mai giocato veramente un picchiaduro e, contemporaneamente, degli appassionati del genere che magari hanno sempre guardato i Pokémon di traverso. In termini di grafica e contenuti si poteva fare sicuramente qualcosa di più, ma chissà che Nintendo non riesca a sorprenderci a colpi di DLC...

Pour conclure, Pokkén Tournament est une idée de tonnerre et son approche technique flirtant avec Tekken ou Soul Calibur était un pari risqué qui s’est avéré réussi à nos yeux. Plutôt joli dans son ensemble avec des Pokémon apportant un gameplay exigeant, varié et dynamique grâce aux phases de terrain et de duel, le soft nous gâte. Néanmoins, avec un scénario absent, un casting faible mais qui s’avère pourtant riche en technique et des musiques un peu effacées, Pokkén Tournament concède quelques faiblesses. M’enfin, le nombre d’arènes disponibles, la possibilité de personnaliser son dresseur et de toujours pouvoir débloquer de nouveaux éléments est un vrai plus qui nous accroche au gamepad. Par la suite, le mode en ligne pourrait s’avérer être une très bonne expérience et les combats entre joueurs confirmés promettent du lourd. De plus, affronter un ami avec une deuxième manette est possible ce qui est plus qu’appréciable. Pokkén Tournament est donc une excellente adaptation et nous sommes bien contents qu’elle ait été adaptée sur consoles et qu’elle soit parvenue jusqu’à chez nous ! Bah oui, à la base, Pokkén Tournament n’est qu’un jeu disponible seulement dans les bornes d’arcade japonaises.

Triste déception que ce Pokkén Tournament. Alors qu'il aurait pu être un jeu divertissant et complet, rendant un bel hommage à la licence Pokémon, il se révèle être un jeu de combat trop simpliste et vide de contenu. Avec un roster de seulement 14 Pokémon, alors que l'on en compte aujourd'hui plus de 700, les équipes de Bandai Namco ont fait le minimum syndical. Ce qui se ressent également au niveau des graphismes, d'une autre époque, où des modes de jeu proposés, dont on aura vite fait le tour. Ces défauts, on les accepterait sans peine au format initial, soit de courtes parties à 200 yen. Mais pour un titre console, vendu plein pot, c'est encore autre chose. Dommage, car le jeu repose sur de bonnes idées qui hélas n'ont pas été complètement exploitées. Reste un titre facile à prendre en mains, au online fonctionnel, et très didactique, donc adapté aux plus jeunes.
