Da circa due anni, NeverDead ha scatenato e stuzzicato le nostre fantasie sulle infinite possibilità del poter fare piazza pulita di nemici senza morire. Sul banco di prova, il titolo Rebellion fallisce, in parte, proprio a causa del suo biglietto da visita: lo smembramento degli arti intriga solo durante le prime fasi di gioco, le possibilità offerte dall’essere immortali sono poche e limitate e dopo un po’ la spada sarà la scelta prediletta fino ai titoli di coda. Aggiungiamo a tutto questo una trama banale, personaggi senza mordente e un comparto tecnico costellato da alti e bassi. Tuttavia, se non possiamo elogiare il prodotto per profondità, non possiamo astenerci dal premiare la semplicità e l’immediatezza di questo titolo, estremamente spassoso una volta fatti i conti con la ripetitività di fondo. NeverDead poteva essere davvero un grande titolo se una maggiore attenzione e un pizzico di varietà fossero state costanti nello sviluppo. Consigliamo ugualmente questo gioco, magari tra qualche mese, ad un prezzo ragionevole, a tutti coloro che stanno cercando un gioco d’azione deliziosamente “ignorante”, senza troppe pretese e in grado di divertire i giocatori, a patto di perdere la testa e intendiamo ovviamente in senso letterale!

Was Rebellion und Konamis Shinta Nojiri sich haben einfallen lassen, klingt konzeptionell richtig gut: Das Prinzip des untoten Dämonenjägers ist zwar nicht neu, doch die buchstäbliche Unsterblichkeit exzessiv auszureizen, indem man seine abtrennbaren Körperteile bei Rätseln gezielt einsetzen kann, um in neue Bereiche vorzustoßen, ist bemerkenswert. Aber in der Umsetzung wirkt vieles ebenso zusammengestückelt wie der Held: Die Kamera z.B. wird in den hektischen und trotz aller Ansätze letztlich weitgehend gewöhnlichen Gefechten immer wieder zum Stolperstein. Die skurrile Charakterzeichnung schafft im Gegensatz zu Bayonetta leider nicht den Spagat zwischen Komik, Selbstironie und Coolness, so dass die Dialoge gezwungen witzig klingen. Und die sich anbietenden Rätsel werden nur sporadisch eingestreut. Zur Ehrenrettung muss ich allerdings sagen, dass sie dann durchweg gelungen sind. So wandelt Bryce stets mit einem seiner ausreißbaren Beine an der Grenze zur Belanglosigkeit. Die andere Seite, die mich jedoch immer wieder ans Pad gelockt hat, besteht aus passablem Leveldesign, fordernden Bosskämpfen und hektischer Action zu treibenden Hammer-Gitarren u.a. von Megadeth. Bryce hätte das Zeug gehabt, Dante und Bayonetta zu einem heißen Tanz aufzufordern, aber dazu fehlt ihm mehr Eleganz und Charakter.

NeverDead è un sacco di buone idee purtroppo racchiuse in un contenitore piagato da pesanti e numerose problematiche e criticità. Su tutto spicca l'estrema ripetitività dell'azione, con meccaniche sempre uguali ripetute all'infinito, mentre quella che dovrebbe essere la sua caratteristica peculiare, lo smembramento, risulta essere piuttosto punitiva e mal implementata a causa della caoticità dell'azione e di una telecamera che penalizza il sistema di combattimento. Un titolo per certi versi originale, ma che non riesce ad andare oltre problemi antichi.

NeverDead sways between boring, frustrating and painful. It serves to remind us why fun-to-play heroes in video games keep their head and limbs intact. It is the video game equivalent of those trashy drug store action movies starring nobody actors, the five dollar sort that you only buy to give away as gag gifts. Do not be fooled: NeverDead represents the bottom of the barrel in video gaming. Do not buy it.
