Afterparty blends genuinely thought-provoking depictions of growing up, working, and the afterlife with great comedy and fantastically awkward conversations. While technically it has a few hiccups, the story and tone they strike are near flawless.

Singulier, déroutant, Afterparty charme par son esthétique captivante et sa narration sardonique. Night School Studio, dans sa représentation théâtrale des enfers, est parvenu à créer un univers complet et inratable. Si les mordus de FPS bourrins peuvent déplorer un gameplay simpliste, la direction artistique, charmante et maîtrisée, saura combler cet aspect. Mettant de côté des actions trop accessoires, le titre se laisse aborder comme un plaisant voyage, six pieds sous terre. Un titre à consommer sans modération.

Nonostante il netto cambio di toni e atmosfere, Afterparty conferma quello che Oxenfree aveva iniziato a far capire: Night School non è qui per stupire il mondo videoludico con nuove soluzioni di gioco ma per raccontare storie, costruite in maniera da coinvolgere il giocatore come elemento attivo nella scelta degli elementi narrativi. La centralità assoluta del testo è forse ancora più netta in questo secondo titolo, con buona pace di chi sperava nell'introduzione di elementi più puramente ludici a dare più sostanza all'esperienza: il racconto non è una cornice qui, ma è il nucleo stesso del gioco. L'azzeramento del livello di sfida e degli elementi più classici del gameplay è una scelta radicale e rischiosa, sostenuta però da una qualità dei testi e da un ritmo del racconto che hanno veramente pochi eguali in questo mercato, forse nessuno. La trama è leggera e rimane meno impressa di altre viste in titoli simili (dallo stesso Oxenfree a Edith Finch), ma la caratterizzazione di ambientazione e personaggi spinge a tornare in questo strano inferno per le varie run necessarie a scoprire tutti gli elementi nascosti della storia.

Having an entire game revolve around talking is an interesting premise and Night School Studio has already proven it to work with their previous release. Yet despite its appealing setting in the underworld, Afterparty somehow managed to lose my interest near the final stretch. It frequently attempts to be funny but sadly misses the ball on more than one occasion and suffers for it. Add in some technical issues here and there for a game that shouldn’t be high-demanding on paper and I can only state that it felt like a slight disappointment after the superior writing and execution of Oxenfree. I would still recommend a playthrough for fans of the genre, but set your expectations accordingly.

Afterparty, c'est cette fête qui commence bien et qui peut, selon la façon dont on va consommer les produits à disposition, finir en bad trip. Les lieux sont accueillants, joliment décorés, les convives intéressants et éloquents, on se marre sans réserve. Et puis on réalise que certaines choses ne nous conviennent pas - on erre plus qu'on ne gère, les divertissements annexes n'amusent pas, sans oublier que les fondations sont un peu branlantes. Ces problèmes prennent de plus en plus d'importance jusqu'à envahir notre esprit et transformer ce qui aurait pu se révéler un bon moment en une excursion somme toute oubliable.
