Starfield isn’t a perfect game. No game is. That said, for a game to have this much ambition and actually pull off almost everything it set out to accomplish is a remarkable achievement. I haven’t even talked about some of the game’s most interesting elements, such as how it approaches New Game+, which I can’t wait for more players to see. Starfield is a triumph that I’m confident players will be exploring for years to come, not only because it will remain incredibly compelling but because it will take that long to see anywhere near everything it has to offer.

Starfield is a magnificent game in both size and scope, with intense potential for players to find themselves blissfully lost. When I began my playthrough, I was utterly verklempt when seeing the diverse array of worlds on display, and grateful that my PC, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S were capable of handling them. There are compromises of frame rate for console players (locked at 30FPS), but you’ll still find a shockingly stable, layered experience with so much to do it boggles the mind. Starfield is the most potent value proposition for Game Pass, being the killer app for the subscription service. It is also the best, most ambitious game in the Xbox Game Studios library to date. It would not be a stretch to say this could be one of the most ambitious games ever made, and that it followed through with many of those goals with relatively low compromise. For those fearing this game was Bethesda flying too close to the sun, this is a reminder that this same ambition, mixed with lots of caution and expertise, is also what put us on the moon.

In einem Jahr, in dem sich alle Rollenspiele über kurz oder lang mit "Baldur's Gate 3" messen müssen, geht "Starfield" einen eigenen Weg. Anstatt auf tiefgehende Dialoge und taktische Kämpfe setzt "Starfield" auf das Neue, das Unbekannte und euren Drang zu sehen, was hinter der nächsten Ecke wartet. Dabei lockt das Rollenspiel mit einer überwältigenden Vielzahl an gut geschriebenen, vielseitigen Quests und einem Crafting-System, mit dem ihr eigene Städte, Schiffe und Waffen zusammenbasteln könnt. Auch wenn sich manch einer sicherlich mehr von einem indirekten Nachfolger zu "Fallout 4" und "Skyrim" erhofft haben dürfte, ist "Starfield" für uns ein Erfolg auf ganzer Ebene, denn es lockt uns in eine Welt, die wir noch über viele Tage gern erkunden werden.

Titanesque, massive… les adjectifs manquent pour décrire l’immensité de Starfield. Brillant comme un soleil, le soft de Bethesda est bien le Skyrim dans l’espace espéré par les amateurs de SF. Certes, en ne révolutionnant aucune mécanique propre au genre, le soft peut être vu comme un petit pas nébuleux pour le C-RPG. Mais il est un bond de géant pour les grandes aventures vidéoludiques, quand bien même certaines fonctionnalités manqueraient de profondeur. Gigantesque, captivant dans ses missions, bourré de choses à faire et à découvrir, Starfield est une indéniable réussite. Avec son New Game + original, il saura vous enchanter pendant un nombre incalculable d'heures.

Starfield è un'avventura colossale che proietta nello spazio l'esperienza maturata dagli artisti di Bethesda, trascinando nella cornice fantascientifica tutti i grandi pregi, ma anche i punti deboli, della storica filosofia creativa. Non si tratta di un'esperienza che consente di navigare in tempo reale verso l'infinito e restare stregati dal senso di scoperta, bensì di un vasto gioco di ruolo con i piedi per terra, cucito direttamente sull'antica formula di The Elder Scrolls, capace di regalare centinaia di ore d'intrattenimento a chiunque sia disposto ad accettarne le regole e i limiti. I grandi miglioramenti che hanno toccato la narrazione e la componente tecnica, assieme alla straordinaria mole di attività offerte, sono infatti mitigati da un'esplorazione disorganica, dalla proverbiale staticità del mondo e da alcuni residui del vecchio Creation Engine. Nel complesso è un enorme videogioco di qualità elevatissima, uno scrigno che racchiude la classica vita alternativa offerta da Bethesda, ma la natura interstellare e le grezze dimensioni rischiano d'indebolire la ricetta della casa.

Starfield’s space, and how it uses it, is never cleanly defined. A game as clumsy as it is charming, as fiddly as it is intuitive, as banal as it is inspired – Starfield is many things at once, with its competing ideas and mechanics hanging together by vibes and a dream. For all of my criticism, it’s undeniable how much Starfield captured my imagination and even now I want to jump back into my ship and head back out there. Bethesda’s signature magic has been scattered across the stars here, its light swallowed by some far reaching recesses, but also finding thrilling new ways to refract through space.

Si vous avez le Xbox Game Pass, la question ne se pose même pas. Grâce au rachat de Bethesda, Microsoft est en capacité de livrer les blockbusters du studio « gratuitement » le jour de leur sortie pour les abonnés à son service de jeu. Un argument de poids pour amener aussi les joueurs pas encore convaincus par le Game Pass. Si vous n’êtes pas abonné au Xbox Game Pass, cela vaut-il le coup d’acheter Starfield ? Oui, sans aucun doute. Par la richesse de son univers, son scénario léché, sa dimension contemplative et une durée de vie que l’on ne pourrait même pas estimer, Starfield figure parmi les jeux les plus palpitants de l’année. Alors oui, il souffre de quelques bugs et imperfections, mais rien qui n’ait vraiment gâché notre plaisir de jouer, trop saisis par la beauté de cette aventure. Une incroyable odyssée spatiale vidéoludique que l’on recommande à tous. À condition de prendre le temps de s’y plonger.

Sans surprises, Starfield est indéniablement un jeu Bethesda. De ses animations faciales douteuses en passant par son IA peu reluisante ou sa gestion d’inventaire poussive, on reconnaît la marque du studio. Mais Starfield, c’est aussi (et surtout) un jeu très peu buggé et bien optimisé avec un univers de science-fiction cohérent, une direction artistique qui a son charme, une intrigue assez surprenante et surtout un appel à la liberté plus que convaincant. Que ça soit dans les quêtes, les activités, l’exploration, la customisation ou la construction, il y a tant à faire et à voir. La base est bonne. Vivement que les modders s’y mettent.

Starfield est un jeu vidéo imparfait, voire perfectible sur certains points qui pourront paraître cruciaux (les combats et l’ergonomie générale en tête). Mais il n’en demeure pas moins que cette proposition signée Bethesda donne un sacré tournis pour les avides d’exploration spatiale. Riche et bien écrit, Starfield transporte grâce à un gros travail sur l’immersion. On se laisse alors facilement porté par cette immense appel vers l’inconnu. Pour Bethesda, qui s’est débarassé de sa principale chimère (les bugs à outrance), il était nécessaire de réussir Starfield. Pour Microsoft, il était nécessaire d’offrir un jeu d’une telle ampleur à son catalogue Xbox. Malgré des vents contraires et une réputation tenace du studio, le projet a su garder le cap. Si vous répondez à l’appel de Starfield, vous pouvez prévoir au moins une centaine d’heures de découvertes diverses et variées devant vous. Vous l’avez probablement déjà fait pour Skyrim, il y a plus de dix ans.

It’s never a great sign when someone recommends a game on the grounds that it gets good after more than a dozen hours, but that’s very much the kind of game Starfield is, and I do recommend it. There are a lot of forces working against it, and the combination of disjointed space travel, nonexistent maps, aggravating inventory management, and a slow rollout of essential abilities very nearly did it in. It was the joys piloting a custom spaceship into and out of all sorts of morally ambiguous situations in a rich sci-fi universe that eventually pulled it out of a nosedive. I’m glad that I powered through the early hours, because its interstellar mystery story pays off and, once the ball got rolling, combat on foot and in space gradually became good enough that its momentum carried me into New Game+ after I’d finished the main story after around 60 hours. Like Skryim and Fallout 4 before it, there’s still an immense amount of quality roleplaying quests and interesting NPCs out there, waiting to be stumbled across, and the pull to seek it out is strong.

Starfield está muy lejos de alcanzar las expectativas que ha generado durante estos años. Es un juego de otra época, de costuras evidentes y que no son propias del año que en el que nos encontramos. Pero va más allá de ser una cuestión de edad: es que se dan varios pasos hacia atrás en los sistemas que ensalzaron a los anteriores proyectos del equipo. Nos encontramos ante un juego que anima a sumergirte en una epopeya espacial explorando lo desconocido... y lo que menos haces es explorar. El bucle jugable consiste en trámites y situaciones de escasa duración viajando de planeta en planeta, como ocurre en un modo historia muy falto de contenido más elaborado. El concepto del juego se forma en capas individuales que no se retroalimentan lo suficiente. No hay interés por descubrir el siguiente icono. No hay motivaciones para realizar ese completismo. Tampoco es relevante el contenido generado por el motor. Hay pocos motivos para permanecer en su universo.
