Natural Doctrine could easily recommended on the quality of its single-player campaign. But factor in a separate deck-based competitive mode that’s playable across all three platforms, and the title should be the next move for every armchair tactician.

As I stated above the game is very unforgiving at times and that will be a huge turn off to some players. Still if you like tactical RPGs and a good challenge you will enjoy this game. If you are more of a run and gun player this one should be avoided.

Tout n'est pourtant pas à jeter dans ce premier essai de RPG tactique pour le jeune studio Kadokawa Games, sur lequel on est tenté de poser un regard bienveillant. Il est toutefois nécessaire d'être d'un naturel flegmatique pour l'apprécier à sa juste valeur. Si vous êtes du genre à exploser votre manette à la moindre contrariété, évitez donc de jouer à Natural Doctrine. Ou prévoyez un bon stock de contrôleurs de rechange.

Natural Doctrine is an exhausting game. It’s punishing, unfair at times and hell-bent on funneling players through a narrow corridor that leaves little-to-no room for tactical experimentation. That being said, it has its moments. In fact, when it’s being nothing other than an average JRPG, it can be an enjoyable experience, with moments of real reward. But there’s a requirement to get in its door: be a masochist, and don’t expect it to live up to its Dark Souls/Tactics Ogre comparisons.

Kadokawa Games nos presenta un juego de rol táctico y desafiante como pocas veces hemos experimentado en título alguno, y menos de PS4. Su desarrollo repleto de combates cerebrales y extensos atraerán a un grupo selecto de usuarios, pero sus defectos (complejidad general, lentitud en su desarrollo, textos sin traducir, etc.) echarán atrás al resto.

Natural Doctrine se queda a unos pasos de ser un imprescindible dentro de su género y dentro del propio catálogo, no es un mal juego y de hecho supone una alegría para los fans de las aventuras RPG más ambiciosos y con ganas de una experiencia nueva, cargada de novedades respecto a otros títulos y por tanto original. Hubiese sido meritorio algo técnicamente mejor, pero lo que tenemos entre manos es un título de estas características.

Natural Doctrine is a broken attempt at revitalizing the tactical RPG genre. At first glance, it appears to have all the markings of a classically inspired and intelligently designed strategy game. But sadly, despite delivering its own rare bursts of satisfaction, it remains frustratingly bogged down by artificially challenging gameplay, a confusing and overtly complex user interface and a painfully slow pacing that will try the patience of even the most Zen-like of gamers. If you’re looking for the next Final Fantasy Tactics, I’m sorry, but you’re going to have to keep looking elsewhere.

Natural Doctrine, nelle intenzioni degli sviluppatori, è un gioco di ruolo strategico profondo ed impegnativo, capace di rilanciare il genere vero nuove ed insperate vette di divertimento. Peccato solo che a conti fatti, il risultato finale sia tutto fuorché un successo: un sistema di gioco lento ed inutilmente troppo complesso, mal si sposa con un comparto grafico a malapena sufficiente ed una curva di apprendimento assolutamente sbilanciata, persino per il giocatore navigato. Il consiglio è quindi di avvicinarsi all’ultimo progetto di Kadokawa Games con assoluta cautela, evitando paragoni coi mostri sacri del genere. Perché per entrare nella storia non bisogna solo copiare i migliori, ma usare anche una gran dose di strategia...

Natural Doctrine zeigt mit seinem komplexen Kampfsystem viel Potential. Der Fokus auf Kooperation und Positionierung überzeugt und dank zahlreicher Fähigkeiten gibt es genug taktische Finessen. Allerdings wird der positive Eindruck durch das unfaire Spieldesign vollständig konterkariert. Spätestens wenn man zum zehnten Mal den gleichen Dungeon durchkämmt, nur um nach dem Sieg über eine schwere Gegnergruppe ein fieses Script-Event und im Anschluss ein Game Over präsentiert zu bekommen, reicht es. Vorbild Dark Souls hin, Zielgruppe Hardcore-Spieler her – an diese Maßstäbe kommt man erst gar nicht heran, denn das Taktik-Rollenspiel ist aufgrund seines mangelhaften Leveldesigns einfach nur frustrierend. Zudem ist die Handlung flach, die Charaktere sind eindimensional und die Kulisse ist gerade auf PlayStation 4 eine fade Enttäuschung.

Natural Doctrine is far from a ‘bad game’, it has great ideas but it seems to be struggling as it virtually always sticks you in compact situations where strategy goes out the window and luck plays a far too important role. The maps tend to funnel your party into corridors where ninety percent of the time the only outcome is death meaning many will find themselves constantly restarting. Even with the various difficulty options Natural Doctrine can be a chore to get through, and the story, albeit interesting, is nothing that furthers the genre. If you love difficult titles, specifically JRPG ones, and aren’t afraid of breaking your controller, then give Natural Doctrine a try. If not, you might want to hold off until a better option comes along.

While its refreshing combat offers a different kind of strategy-RPG challenge, some ridiculously punitive design decisions sabotage a good deal of the potential fun in Natural Doctrine. Considering the experienced pedigree of the developers involved—they count Patapon among their previous works—that's simply inexcusable.

I know that in the current climate of the gaming industry, everyone is glamouring for hardcore games that don’t hold their hand, but I don’t think Natural Doctrine is what you’re looking for. The game isn't challenging so much as it is just inconsistent because the enemy rules are seemingly made up as it goes along. It just isn't enjoyable to play, and that's a really big failure in a game like this.

Natural Doctrine tries to be an unforgiving and brutal tactical RPG that punishes you for the tiniest mistake, and it most certainly does that. But it also punishes you for things outside your control, leading to frustrating, messy battles. Success comes down to luck rather than decisive strategy, robbing me of the sense of well-earned victory I yearn for. And with annoying characters, a dumb story, and outdated graphics, there’s not much that makes playing Natural Doctrine worth the stress.
