Outside of its disappointing final battle, The Banner Saga 2 is a masterpiece of storytelling and engaging turn-based strategy combat. The combination of a dedicated sense of player agency and a stark moral dichotomy between the two sides of the narrative make for an experience that will immediately prompt thousands to start a countdown until The Banner Saga 3. Whenever a sequel is announced for a phenomenal title, there’s always a sense that things could go horribly wrong and ruin the general perception surrounding the original game. Not only does The Banner Saga 2 meet every expectation that one could have following the first game, but it exceeds them in a number of tangible areas. Oh, and let’s not forget that it’s one of the most gorgeous animated games that the industry has ever seen and that has to count for something. A firm early nominee for story-based end-of-the-year awards, The Banner Saga 2 is an absolute must play for anyone with even a passing interest in high fantasy or strategy games.

Superb writing and a unique combat system combine to make The Banner Saga 2 something quite special, in the same way it did back in 2014. The larger variety and frequent introduction of enemy types stops The Banner Saga 2 from becoming dull and repetitive. The Banner Saga is fast becoming one of the best series in modern games, with some of the strongest characterisation and world-building in years.

È un piacere indescrivibile (e raro) giocare il sequel di un capolavoro trovandolo addirittura migliore del suo predecessore. Eppure, con il loro The Banner Saga 2, i ragazzi di Stoic sono riusciti in questa encomiabile impresa. Se da una parte, infatti, la narrazione continua a splendere grazie alla compenetrazione di più linee narrative distinte e ben scritte, subendo persino un'apprezzabilissima maturazione nei toni e nelle tematiche, dall'altra il sistema di combattimento tattico risulta impreziosito da un buon numero di novità capaci di dare ancora più sostanza ad una struttura già di per sé brillante e funzionale. Se poi si aggiunge un comparto artistico sontuoso, il risultato è senza dubbio un piccolo capolavoro da godere dall'inizio alla fine, e che vi consigliamo senza remore. Brava Stoic!

Quando qualcosa è già bello così com'è, diventa difficile andarne a cambiare qualche aspetto senza rischiare di rovinare il tutto. Lo sanno bene i membri di Stoic Studio, che con The Banner Saga 2 hanno portato avanti l'ottimo lavoro svolto col capitolo iniziale, apportando delle aggiunte piuttosto limitate a un'opera che già prima spiccava in ambito strategico, narrativo e stilistico. E scusate se è poco. In conclusione, se come noi avete amato il gioco uscito nel 2014 questo è quanto basta per correre subito a comprare The Banner Saga 2. Viceversa, se il primo The Banner Saga non è mai entrato nel vostro cuore, difficilmente lo farà in questa occasione.

The Banner Saga 2 doesn't change much of the experience that made the original such a well-loved surprise two years ago, and that's a good thing. The improvements may be small, but they're also substantial: the new combat units, the introduction of a second caravan story to follow, and the obstacles in the battlefield add up nicely. While beautifully written and populated with memorable characters and twists, the story does slightly suffer from a case of the "middle episodes" that may leave you eager for more. On the bright side, we know that more is on the way in a third and final installment.

The Banner Saga 2 smussa alcuni angoli del predecessore ed è, a livello di gameplay, un gioco migliore, anche se molto simile. Ma, in primo luogo, si tratta di un'esperienza narrativa e visiva. Sotto entrambi i punti di vista il prodotto Stoic è di qualità, ma impone un particolare stile di gioco. Sembra pensato, innanzitutto, per essere rigiocato: dura una decina di ore ma le storie alternative possibili sono parecchie. Soprattutto, scelte e conseguenze hanno un legame piuttosto labile, e il senno di poi rimane l'unica, mesta consolazione di fronte alle vittime delle nostre decisioni sbagliate. Siamo onesti, è così anche nella vita. Ma è anche, devo ammetterlo, poco "ludico" per i miei gusti. Non si tratta di una critica, piuttosto di un avvertimento. Se la cosa non vi turba, il sentiero di The Banner Saga 2 merita di essere percorso fino alla fine.

The Banner Saga 2 solventa muchos de los puntos más urgentes de su primera entrega, creando un combate más rico y elaborado. Pero en el camino no se olvida de añadir una mayor profundidad a toda la obra, mientras mantiene y ensalza aún más la gran calidad artística del estudio. Un videojuego para quienes quieran continuar la saga del estandarte, pero en el que recomendamos empezar por su primera parte para seguir la historia en orden.

The Banner Saga 2 est tout aussi bon que le premier et reste timide en terme de nouveautés. Évidemment, cela serait complètement illogique que tout change et que l’on se retrouve avec quelque chose de différent dans une saga cherchant à créer un univers et une trilogie. Ainsi, on peut dire qu’il vaut clairement le coup et d’autant plus pour les joueurs Xbox One qui peuvent en profiter gratuitement pour ce mois de Juillet 2016. Du côté des problèmes, on notera que la traduction française n’est pas encore là – ce qui reste plutôt pénalisant, sachant que l’on a ici un RPG Tactique, que les musiques ne se ressentent pas suffisamment et que le manque de doublage se fasse ressentir. Pourtant, les cinématiques nombreuses et qualitatives, les classes supplémentaires et toutes les petites nouveautés sont plus qu’appréciables et finalement, s’il l’on devait considérer cela comme un point négatif, c’est que vous êtes obligés de vous procurer le premier épisode pour vraiment profiter pleinement de ce jeu.
