The moment you begin Headlander and see the VHS-style lines show up along with the formation of the old-school title with a blast of colors and a jaunty tune, you know you're in for something good. And the moment you learn how to nail fifty headshots and earn a trophy called "The Gun is Good," you know you're in for a classic. The unique gimmick of being able to hijack enemy bodies builds upon the metrodvania standards quite beautifully and the over-the-top '70s sci-fi setting provides a lot of jaw-dropping sights and scenery to experience. This is easily one of the year's most enjoyable games and one you won't be forgetting anytime soon. As dementedly fun as one of its hedonistic trips to the Fondlarium, Headlander is an amazing metroidvania game that you really need to check out.

Headlander is an unexpectedly great take on Metroidviania-style action. Some of the objective design renders its flashier, body-endangering powers moot, but the quick and complex moment-to-moment gameplay carries it splendidly. It’s difficult but fair, and fast-paced but satisfying through to the end. And with a story so dangerously loaded with trope upon trope, it’s a joy to see Headlander sidestep some cliches with a beautiful setting, dark humor, and, well… a rocket-powered head. That’ll do the trick.

Una aventura al estilo metroidvania ligera, amena y muy adictiva, que es capaz de sorprender por su planteamiento retrofuturista, sin dejar que nos separemos del mando (o el teclado). Puede que peque de falta de ambición, pero ese es el mayor fallo que se le puede achacar. Sus combates podrían tener más intríngulis, su argumento más chicha o la potenciación del personaje mayor profundidad. Sin embargo, tal y como está, encontraremos un juego divertido e intenso, capaz de rellenar varias tardes de este cálido verano.

Una cabeza voladora como protagonista de una aventura de acción y plataformas 2,5D. Con esa premisa y la estética del cine de ciencia ficción de los 70, no es de extrañar que Headlander termine por divertir a cualquiera. Es un videojuego con gracia, que presenta ideas originales, desafíos apasionantes y una historia que se sigue con interés. No llega al nivel de los clásicos, pues le falta más variedad en su acción y unos tiroteos mejor planteados, pero si le das una oportunidad, seguro que te lo pasas en grande con lo nuevo de Double Fine para PC y PlayStation 4.

Double Fine was able to take a classic gaming genre and imbue new life into it with their trademark humor, and the resulting experience is solid. Just floating through the demented world that they’ve created is enjoyable thanks to the wonky characters you’ll come into contact with, and the mechanics are unique despite existing within a pretty standard genre framework. It could use some tweaks here and there, but fans of metroidvanias are sure to have a great time floating through the ridiculous world of Headlander.

Double Fine Productions has managed to craft an experience in Headlander that successfully combines the retro style of 1970's science fiction with excellent modern gaming trappings. Don't let the absurd premise sway you, there's more than just zaniness here.

Endlich mal wieder ein freches Videospiel! Headlander ist ein witziges und vor allem visuell markantes Action-Adventure. Dabei sticht natürlich die Idee mit dem umher düsenden Kopf heraus, mit dem man robotische Feinde enthauptet, um deren Fähigkeiten zu übernehmen – bis hin zum kleinen Staubsauger. Man läuft, rollt, schwebt, weicht aus und irgendwann liefert man sich gleißende Lasergefechte. Und all das in einer bizarren futuristische Welt, die mit ihrem Retro- und 70er-Flair für eine besondere visuelle Erfahrung sorgt. Schade ist allerdings, dass die interessante Erkundung der Labyrinthe nicht noch besser mit den erlernbaren Fähigkeiten sowie Geheimnissen verknüpft wurde – so beschränken sich die Entdeckungen irgendwann auf noch mehr Helmschub & Co. Außerdem nerven kleinere Bildratenprobleme sowie Abstürze. Aber Headlander sorgt aufgrund seines coolen Artdesigns, der humorvollen Dystopie sowie der frischen Kopf-ab-und-weiter-Mechanik für richtig gute, angenehm kreative Unterhaltung!

L'originale concept del gioco, così come l'ambientazione e uno stile grafico che fa della fantascienza vintage un vero e proprio vanto, non sono supportati da una trama coinvolgente e, per giunta, devono fare i conti con meccaniche spesso ripetitive. Una scintilla di genialità c'è, si intravede, ma non è stata sviluppata, espansa e sorretta dalla solita classe made in Double Fine. Headlander, insomma, finisce per essere solamente l'ennesimo metroidvania, abbastanza impegnativo, ludicamente efficace, ma mai davvero coinvolgente/memorabile.

Alors que Song of the Deep est déjà passé par là avec son Metroidvania sous-marin, Headlander est-il du même niveau finalement avec son Metroidvania science-fiction avec un style 70’s ? Connaissant très bien le studio Double Fine Productions, c’est clairement une réussite. Nous connaissions déjà tout le savoir-faire de Double Fine quand il s’agit de développer un jeu tout en proposant un univers loufoque et orignal, et c’est pour le coup une nouvelle fois une bonne pioche avec Headlander. Le titre reprend à la perfection les codes du Metroidvania, tout en gardant il faut bien l’avouer sa propre identité, et son cachet artistique ayant un style 70’s très plaisant. Le concept est vraiment original en soi, puis l’humour propre au studio est lui aussi de nouveau présent pour notre plus grand bonheur. Bon, il est vrai que le jeu a forcément des défauts avec une action en plein jeu tantôt confuse, tantôt brouillonne avec une visée un poil imprécise et quelques textures datées, certes. Par contre, chose appréciable, le jeu est long et puis pour 19.99 €, autant foncer sans réfléchir, surtout si vous adorez les Metroidvania !

Un metroidvania dalle tinte sci-fi, che si basa sull’humor di Double Fine e su un concept tutto sommato interessante. Una cura maniacale di ogni aspetto dell’esperienza, da quello grafico a quello sonoro, con tanti dettagli e citazioni che non mancheranno di chiamare in causa veri e propri punti fermi della cinematografia contemporanea. Purtroppo ad Headlander manca un personaggio con il giusto spessore, che coinvolga e spinga il giocatore ad andare avanti. Non si tratta del fatto che il personaggio sia a tutti gli effetti “solo” una testa, perché i corpi di cui appropriarsi non mancheranno. Crediamo che il grosso limite di Headlander consista nell’impossibilità del nostro personaggio di parlare, e quindi nell’impoverimento del carisma dello stesso e quindi della trama. Tolti alcuni momenti particolarmente coinvolgenti, le motivazioni per portare il gioco a termine sono spesso venute a mancare: peccato perché Headlander si basa su un gameplay solido, ma purtroppo troppo poco vario per raggiungere vette più alte, anche per una testa volante.

Headlander è un metroidvania onesto, con qualche soluzione persino coraggiosa: la rinuncia quasi integrale ad una componente platform, con l'intento di esaltare le fasi enigmistiche e le sparatorie, è una scelta interessante, che rende a suo modo unico e distintivo il gameplay del titolo Double Fine. Purtroppo il team di sviluppo fa qualche pasticcio con il backtracking, e per una ragione misteriosa decide di indicare sulla mappa la posizione di tutte le aree segrete, disinnescando quindi il piacere della scoperta (avete giocato Axiom Verge, vero?). L'avventura di Headlander, insomma, tende a farsi meccanica troppo presto, anche se per fortuna le nuove sezioni che si incontrano nell'avanzamento non risultano mai poco interessanti. Per farsi perdonare qualche leggerezza di troppo (come un'allucinata sezione legata alle figure degli scacchi) il titolo mette in campo anche uno stile efficace e piacevole, e qualche situazione pronta a strapparvi un sorriso.
