Sea of Stars shows modern RPGs how it's done in this incredible throwback to SNES classics. It’s an absolute joy to play from start to finish, though the story, writing, and flat characters leave some potential untapped. Even so, this is a gorgeous adventure that you won’t want to miss.

Sea of Stars a tout de l'excellent hommage aux plus grands noms du jeu de rôle japonais des années 90. Une histoire bien rythmée, un casting de personnages auquel on s'attache vite pour leurs personnalités assumées. Il arrive à faire le même travail d'émerveillement que ses modèles, grâce à sa direction artistique à couper le souffle et sa bande-originale parfaite pour l'aventure. Si les combats sont engageants et poussent le joueur à réfléchir à chaque affrontement, ils tendent à allonger la bonne dynamique du titre. C'est surtout par le manque d'évolution de gameplay pour les personnages que les joueurs pourront trouver une certaine lassitude. Si Sea of Stars n'est donc pas autant révolutionnaire que ses maîtres spirituels en leur époque, il devrait tout de même avoir une place de choix sur une étagère de votre ludothèque en 2023. Il risque bien de s'imposer comme le jeu indépendant de l'année si Silksong reste discret voire prétendre à des prix à la concurrence bien plus féroce. Plus qu'une belle performance pour un ovni venu des années 90.

Sea of Stars me ha encantado. No reinventa la rueda ni en lo narrativo ni en lo jugable, pero aporta buenas ideas al género en lo relativo a la exploración y al combate. Es precioso y sus personajes te enamorarán. Es un juego de rol ágil, bien pensado y que te devolverá a los mejores momentos vividos con tus JRPG favoritos de siempre. De lo mejorcito del género que ha salido en los últimos años. Estando de lanzamiento tanto en Game Pass como en el servicio de suscripción de PlayStation, no hay excusa.

Sea of Stars may pinch its influences from numerous 16-bit titles like Chrono Trigger, but the gameplay feels neither stale or old. The gorgeous 2D environments and bizarre cosmic-esque plot will hold players' attention for the whole 35-40-hour runtime.

Sea of Stars is an excellent tribute RPG that channels the best parts of its ‘90s-era forebears like Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 6, and even Star Ocean: The Second Story. Because of that, it’s fair to say that its world, graphical style, and mechanics aren’t wholly original, but there are enough interesting twists in its 30-hour story to make for a rich and enjoyable experience of its own merit. This isn’t just nostalgia fodder. That said, its twitchy combat can be difficult to get a handle on, and once you do, it only stays interesting for so long before its limited customization options make it start to feel just a little repetitive. That’s made up for by a strong soundtrack, an approachable and endearing story, and a wide number of fun zones and boss fights that make this a trip worth taking.

Drawing heavily from classic RPGs of past console generations, Sea of Stars creates an exciting new adventure that’s also a worthy tribute to the classics. It proudly flaunts its influences but does so in a way that pays homage to them. The original story and characters are entertaining and engrossing enough to keep the roughly thirty hour playthrough enjoyable. The story does rely on genre tropes at times which leads to predictable moments, but given the nature of this type of game, that’s to be expected. Sea of Stars doesn’t break any real innovative ground, but does a great job of combining so many elements of older games into a modern take on the classic formula. As such, it’s a title that should be enjoyed by any fan of classic turn-based RPGs.
