What Remains of Edith Finch is what happens when you make a video game about obituaries. On the surface it just looks like a game about death as you live out the last moments of various people's lives. Search deeper, and you find it's a game celebrating how they lived.

What Remains of Edith Finch est un grand jeu. Un grand jeu narratif, qui sublime et remet les pendules à l’heure, posant une nouvelle référence pour le genre. Rarement un titre nous aura en si peu de temps émerveillé et chamboulé et prouve que le genre narratif ne se cantonne pas qu’à de simples walking simulator. Un immanquable !

Dopo l'evocativo The Unfinished Swan, gli sviluppatori di Giant Sparrow fanno nuovamente centro con What Remains of Edith Finch, avventura narrativa che mette in scena la storia (le storie) della bizzarra famiglia Finch. Sebbene la struttura sia quella tipica del walking simulator, con i riflettori puntati su esplorazione e narrazione, gli sviluppatori dimostrano un originale e fantasioso gusto per la sperimentazione. Ne nasce un'opera toccante e carica d'inventiva, che conquista per lo stile "fanciullesco" con cui vengono toccati temi importanti come la morte e i rapporti familiari. La casa dei Finch è una sorta di santuario sospeso nel tempo; ogni stanza una porta d'accesso verso un passato che mescola realtà e immaginazione. Una natura morta che, nonostante i fatti e le apparenze, custodisce la vita. I tanto vituperati walking simulator hanno una nuova e memorabile freccia al proprio arco.

A completare il quadro dipinto dal team indipendente di base a Santa Monica, ci pensa una colonna sonora evocativa ed emozionante, le cui melodie partecipano all’immersione sensoriale nell’opera interattiva. A intaccare leggermente l’esperienza sono invece alcuni piccoli problemi tecnici, rappresentati nella versione testata (su PlayStation 4 standard) da qualche saltuario rallentamento che però, complici i ritmi lenti della produzione, non segnano eccessivamente l’opera nel suo complesso. Anche il livello di dettaglio, nonostante la natura indipendente del titolo, non fa onestamente gridare al miracolo, ma la già lodata direzione artistica sopperisce sufficientemente anche alle necessità dei giocatori più esigenti. La longevità infine, seppur in linea con altre produzioni di genere, lascia parzialmente l’amaro in bocca. Considerazione quest’ultima però, che dimostra ancora una volta quanto sia piacevole esplorare insieme a Edith la vecchia casa di famiglia, assaporare i ricordi dei suoi familiari, vivere un turbinio di sensazioni ed emozioni, scoprendo passo dopo passo cosa rimane di Edith Finch.

Nous ne pouvons que vous recommander cette épopée efficace, poignante, et maligne, que nous ne dévoilerons pas plus ici. Tel un Journey, un Limbo, un Inside, un Gone Home, un Unfinished Swan ou encore un Ethan Carter, What Remains of Edith Finch intègre le podium des aventures courtes, émouvantes, et diablement bien pensées. Un jeu qui vous émerveillera, un jeu que vous ne referez sans doute jamais, mais que vous n'aurez de cesse de recommander. S'il vous intéresse, ruez-vous dessus sans trop vous renseigner ou vous spoiler, car plus vous en verrez et moins les rouages du titre vont vous marquer... Une pépite, assurément.

No se trata de un juego para todo tipo de jugadores, sino para aquellos que buscan una propuesta más calmada y en la que la narrativa tenga un peso mucho mayor. Si es tu caso, What Remains of Edith Finch es una historia incomparable, contada de una forma única, que merece la pena vivir. Eso, a pesar de que el hecho de llegar con voces en inglés (y subtítulos en castellano) lastre un tanto la experiencia, y que su rendimiento gráfico y sus niveles de interactividad no sean precisamente extraordinarios, a pesar de la belleza de lo mostrado en pantalla en todo momento.

What Remains of Edith Finch è una storia quieta, ci prende per mano e ci accompagna a scoprirla con leggerezza ma senza risparmiare niente. Ci mette di fronte a dei veri e propri mausolei nella forma di normali stanze da letto e riesce a trovare la bellezza - a volte persino il divertimento - in quella che a conti fatti è una tragedia. Grazie a una scrittura e una direzione impeccabili, che affiancano magistralmente un approccio sempre diverso al ricordo della famiglia Finch, mi sono trovata di fronte a un gioco che, pur nella sua eccessiva brevità, trasuda vita persino quando è circondato dalla morte.

What Remains of Edith Finch è solo l’ultimo di una lunga serie di esperimenti narrativi che il medium del videogioco permette: è una storia familiare, che va a scavare in modi inaspettati nel passato di Edith e nelle storie che riecheggiano nelle pareti, nelle porte e nelle stanze di questa grande, bizzarra villa. Un passato sofferto, forse maledetto, ma cruciale per conoscere sé stessi e per affrontare il futuro. Il racconto di Edith Finch ci ha ricordato, attraverso una marginale ma pur sempre efficace interattività, l’importanza delle storie nella nostra vita. Cosa rimane di Edith Finch? Un ricordo breve, ma bellissimo.

It quickly sucks you into its world and has you hungry to figure out what’s going on with the Finch family, and what you uncover never fails to be surprising. It may not be the longest or most challenging game out there, but it’s one that has an intriguing world that’s worth visiting.

What Remains of Edith Finch masterfully shows that narrative-driven games can tell stories in creative ways without sacrificing gameplay. Ultimately, though, the experience is let down by the story itself, which doesn’t do much of anything interesting with its characters or subject matter.
