Cocoon is a breathtaking puzzle-platformer that borders on psychedelic. Building on what made Inside designer Jeppe Carlsen's previous work stand out, Cocoon not only presents a mind-bending journey through the cosmos via fascinating worlds-within-worlds puzzle mechanics that beg you to delve another layer deeper, but an interesting take on the repetition of work, life, and being part of a "bigger picture." With a relatively short playtime and some well-hidden collectibles that make it worth replaying, Cocoon is a must-play for fans of Limbo or Inside, or anyone looking for a new puzzle adventure to play and then sit down and think about for a while.

COCOON è la dimostrazione di come l'eleganza passi sempre dalla semplicità e da una chiara idea di ciò che si è. COCOON non è un'avventura dalla forte trazione narrativa; non vuole mettere al centro del gameplay dinamiche violente; non spinge il giocatore a lambiccarsi il cervello per ore su enigmi apparentemente irrisolvibili. COCOON è un'opera che si riduce all'osso e, per questo, vince; è una danza elegante tra mondi, capace di non risultare mai stucchevole; è un'esperienza che mette al centro la capacità puramente animale di analizzare l'ambiente e ciò che si ha a disposizione per trovare una soluzione efficiente in qualsiasi situazione. È un'opera che risulterebbe gradita a Donna Haraway, filosofa che predica il con-divenire dell'uomo con altre specie come unico modo per salvare il nostro mondo morente. L'umanoide-maggiolino di COCOON è l'eroe dei nostri tempi difficili, ed è protagonista di uno dei videogiochi più brillanti di questo ricco 2023.

Si on aurait apprécié une aventure un peu plus longue (5h seulement sont nécessaires pour compléter l’aventure), c’est d’abord parce que tout ce que propose Cocoon est particulièrement maitrisé et déborde de bonnes idées. L’apprentissage des mécanismes, la narration par les décors et les situations, l’utilisation des différents orbes : tout se fait naturellement et parvient à suivre une évolution bien précise, tout en offrant quelques libertés au joueur. Une aventure marquante et prenante !

Cocoon propone un gameplay solido, che si sviluppa lungo una curva di apprendimento ben congegnata e stimolante. Un impianto in grado di conquistare rapidamente l'attenzione del giocatore, che finisce per restare senza sforzo invischiato in questo insolito intreccio di mondi. A un game design lodevole fa tuttavia da contraltare un comparto narrativo che non riesce a trascinare con altrettanta forza il pubblico. Le motivazioni del protagonista e l'epilogo della sua avventura faticano a lasciare il segno al termine del viaggio proposto da Cocoon. Una dicotomia che troverà estimatori negli amanti dei racconti volutamente criptici, ma che potrebbe generare un lieve disappunto nei giocatori in cerca di emozioni intense. Alla base, ci teniamo a ribadirlo, resta in ogni caso un'esperienza ludica di assoluto pregio.

Vous l’avez certainement perçu durant notre test très très positif, Cocoon est une expérience à part, un jeu de réflexion pas commun, qui nous transporte dans son univers et qui nous laisse là, sans autres indications que nos propres déductions et notre égo reboosté par des trouvailles rocambolesques. Un jeu au level design intelligent, aux boss suffisamment marquants et exceptionnellement bien mis en scène à chaque fois, et à la technique générale parfaite. Bien que l’on pourrait regretter un manque de mise en contexte, pour percevoir davantage les raisons du pourquoi de nos agissements, ainsi qu’une quantité de mondes différents plus qu’espéré, associés à une durée de vie un peu courte avec une rejouabilité très limitée, on ne boude pas notre plaisir d’évoluer dans ce multivers coloré et mystérieux, qui nous appelle en permanence à revenir le démêler, si tant est que l’on soit attiré par ce genre de jeu posé et réfléchi. Une très belle réussite des développeurs Geometric Interactive permettant à Cocoon de se classer dans le top des jeux de cette année, presque au rang de chef-d’œuvre du genre des puzzle-games.

Cocoon demuestra que Limbo e Inside no fueron casualidad. Es un videojuego diseñado de manera fantástica y minimalista. La jugabilidad sabe explicar quién eres y por qué, y no usa ni un solo tutorial. Su flow es embriagador e hipnótico, y su idea de saltar de mundo en mundo es fabulosa. A eso le sumas uns puzzles muy bien diseñados y tienes ante ti un juegazo que no te puedes perder.

Cocoon è un intrigante puzzle game che, pur non reinventando le meccaniche del genere, immerge il giocatore in un viaggio introspettivo attraverso sfere che comprendono interi mondi al loro interno. Sebbene particolarmente semplice, offre enigmi ben costruiti e una curva di apprendimento estremamente bilanciata. Non raggiunge le vette espressive di titoli come Journey, ma rappresenta un significativo progresso nei giochi di Carlsen, invitando il giocatore a riflettere su sé stesso e sui mondi che ha creato. Assolutamente consigliato.

Geometric Interactive’s debut in Cocoon, though lacking in the kind of imagination and surreal creativity its premise might entail, still winds up a pleasant and solid-enough first attempt. A detail you can so much read as a plus as you can a negative, the relatively short run-time though requires less of a time-sink does on the flip-side inevitably reveal the most blatant of faults. Namely its seemingly conserved and all-too-aware nature as a game merely testing the waters, rather than going all-in to deliver truly strange outcomes. To some, that lacking inventiveness and willing subverting of its very nature will disappoint. For others, the simple pleasure in how the game delivers such a progression again and again — not to mention the ease with which it manages to handle so much with so minimal a control scheme — will prove sufficient-enough praise. While it may not fully capitalize on the draw of its main premise, satisfying puzzle design, boss encounters and that simplest pleasure of seeing your character hop into and out of worlds on a whim lends Cocoon well-warranted and ultimately long-lasting charm.
