Wo Long: Fall Dynasty is a near flawless game and what I hope is just an intro to this fantastic world. Team Ninja have crafted a game that takes the basic structure of Nioh and other Souls-likes and creates their own unique, rewarding, and brutally challenging experience. In its almost forty hour campaign I was constantly surprised by the amount of new locations, creative boss fights, and sheer ambition of the game. It may be early in the year, but I’d be surprised if any game beats Wo Long for the top of my year-end list.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is a dark fantasy take on the Three Kingdoms. The difficulty is high, almost seeming insurmountable at first, but part of what makes Wo Long great is how the difficulty isn’t unfair. The gameplay is structured where players are rewarded for learning the fighting style of their enemies and using their mastery of their own skills against them. It can be frustrating and requires patience to master, but it’s such a great feeling to finally overcome a strong adversary. Challenge alone does not make a game great, but Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty excels in every area from artistic design to gameplay mechanics. Watching nameless warrior execute their different moves is akin to a ballet of brutality. The gameplay mechanics are are smooth and responsive as the game is challenging, making it a joy to invest the time in mastering the battle system. This isn’t the Three Kingdoms setting we were expecting, but it is the Three Kingdoms game we needed.

It's fast, frenetic, and hits like a truck, with one of the most mesmeric combat systems we've ever had the pleasure to master. It might scare off more casual players, but those looking for a challenge, well — you can stop looking.

Après Nioh, la Team Ninja prouve une nouvelle fois sa très grande maîtrise de l’action-RPG avec Wo Long Fallen Dynasty. Certes, la copie n’est pas parfaite (bestiaire pas assez fourni, endgame plutôt décevant, missions annexes qui reprennent des zones déjà visitées) mais le gameplay est tellement solide qu’on est prêt à presque tout excuser ! Ici, tout est affaire de parade, d’arts martiaux et de sorts, dans une approche mine de rien novatrice pour le genre. La plupart des ambiances sont réussies, il y a largement de quoi choisir sa voie en tant que guerrier et le tout se révèle même plus accessible que les Souls-like japonais du studio. Une excellente pioche, qui plus est disponible "day one" dans le Xbox Game Pass.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty es mucho más que "el Sekiro de Team Ninja": el parry es una mecánica central, sí, pero también lo son su ingenioso sistema de habilidades y la forma en que nos invita a explorar. Si combinamos estas ideas con la impecable jugabilidad del estudio, el resultado es un juegazo de acción y un gran primer paso para una nueva IP.

Wo Long Fallen Dynasty è un ottimo souls-like. Il nuovo titolo modifica e migliora sotto certi aspetti la formula dei titoli del genere di Team Ninja, e risulta molto convincente soprattutto pad alla mano e negli scontri. Ho apprezzato tanto la “semplicità” anche nel potenziamento del personaggio e l’introduzione del livello Morale, ma sono rimasto un po’ deluso dal comparto tecnico e soprattutto dal level design, con mappe troppo anonime e in generale molto piccole e ripetitive. Nel complesso, comunque, non posso che consigliare il lungo viaggio nella storia della dinastia Wei e il grande fascino di un numero incredibile di personaggi storici e di creature fantastiche, soprattutto agli appassionati del genere ma non solo. Per quanto brutale, infatti, trovo che Wo Long possa essere un ottimo entry level per i nuovi arrivati, ma attenzione: se avete poca pazienza e la paura di morire ludicamente parlando è troppo forte, statene alla larga!

Team Ninja levert waar ze tegenwoordig het best in zijn: piekfijne Soulslike-actie. Het vechtsysteem mixt op bevredigende wijze spektakel en diepgang en de voornaamste reden waarom we Wo Long een mooie score geven. Perfect aanvallen deflecteren om vervolgens een gebroken vijand een ferme tik te verkopen voelt bovendien enorm bevredigend aan. Alles eromheen is vertrouwd, al wordt de geliefde Souls-formule voldoende opgefrist door het slimme moraalsysteem.

Wo Long Fallen Dynasty pourrait donner l’image d’un jeu se reposant uniquement sur les acquis de son prédécesseur, mais se serait se fourvoyer complètement. Certes, les codes basiques du genre sont bien recyclés mais la surcouche « China » transforme la recette, comme Nioh en son temps avec le contexte japonais. Il faut un temps d’adaptation, quand on est habitué à une approche, pour en changer sans criser, mais plus on enchaine les sessions et plus le kiff est là pour au final une expérience plus abordable que la majorité des ARPG exigeants, sans en perdre le fun. L’univers des Trois Royaumes sauce dark fantasy est aguicheur et accrocheur et la direction artistique régale. Ce voyage, même sans être exempt de tout reproche, remplit sans souci ce qu’on attend d’un jeu vidéo : du plaisir en barre !

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty’s combat plays very differently from Team Ninja’s own Nioh games – more in the mold of Sekiro than Dark Souls – and yet it manages to excel and falter in just about the same areas. When it comes to the clashing of melee weapons, Wo Long is among the best in the genre, full stop. Its action is fast and thrilling, the options for taking down its ferocious enemies are many and immensely rewarding to master, and its deflection-heavy combat is one of the most satisfying since Sekiro. All of those strengths outweigh an overbearing loot system, poor storytelling, and even a disappointing lack of variety in enemies. If not for that, Wo Long might’ve been one of Team Ninja’s greatest achievements – as it is, it’s simply a great one.

Wo Long Fallen Dynasty si presenta come un astro che brilla a tratti, sospeso tra picchi luminosi di gameplay e singhiozzi di tipo tecnico. In generale, per coloro che vogliono mettersi alla prova, l’ultima fatica di Team Ninja è imperdibile, complice anche il suo debutto su Xbox Game Pass, che farà gola a tutti gli abbonati. Siamo sicuri che gli epici scontri messi in scena in questa epopea saranno in grado di stimolarvi per ore, premiando i vostri sforzi con un comparto ludico solido, frenato solo da alcune scelte figlie di una mentalità conservativa. Ci auguriamo che in futuro il collettivo deciderà di abbandonare alcuni degli stilemi che contraddistinguono i titoli di questo filone, così da poterlo portare al livello successivo in via definitiva, anche grazie alla potenza delle console dell’attuale generazione.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty sembra quasi uno spin-off di Nioh, da cui ricicla gran parte degli asset e da cui copincolla candidamente gran parte dei sistemi di gioco. Le aggiunte più di rilievo sono il sistema di morale, le stregonerie e la barra dello spirito (a sua volta del tutto simile alla postura già vista in Sekiro), che tutto sommato funzionano alla grande e riescono anche a garantire una buona varietà all'avventura. Team Ninja deve però guardare oltre e sperimentare qualcosa di nuovo, perché è da sei anni che continua a propinarci sostanzialmente lo stesso gioco di base, con piccole e non così rilevanti migliorie.

Wo Long was always destined to be judged in the long shadow of the exceptional Nioh 2, which here is slightly to its detriment. It does an admirable job of rolling some fresh core mechanics into the now well-established hardcore hack and slash dough recipe, but accidentally only used three quarters of the required amount of yeast and then left the heat on medium. The result is a title that doesn’t quite rise like it should, and is a little doughy in the middle. Elaborate bread metaphors aside, Wo Long is absolutely a good game from a talented studio, but it falls short of being a great one.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty è un esperimento riuscito solamente in parte. Team Ninja fatica a trovare il giusto bilanciamento e, nel tentativo di renderlo più accessibile di un fin troppo punitivo Nioh, ottiene l'effetto opposto e dà al giocatore un senso d'invincibilità già dalle prime battute. Il sistema di combattimento dinamico e personalizzabile è senza alcun dubbio un, se non il, punto forte del gioco ma l'utilizzo dello spirito in sostituzione del mana fa sì che questi si possa rompere facilmente impostando le giuste stregonerie (o anche senza, se si è pronti di riflessi). La verticalità del level design risulta a volte un ostacolo e dà vita ad ambientazioni difficili da leggere o navigare, pur nella loro generale ristrettezza. La trama è accessoria, né sorprende che lo sia dati i precedenti con Nioh 2, ma c'è un filo meno di continuità rispetto a quest'ultimo, lasciando la sensazione di livelli e situazioni piuttosto disuniti tra loro. Ciò non toglie che Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty sia un gioco assuefacente, se volete cimentarvi in un'avventura che per una volta insegna al nemico cosa significa subire e basta.

Wo Long: Fallen Destiny è un gioco d'azione che ricalca il predecessore spirituale Nioh aggiungendo qualche elemento preso qua e là da titoli facenti parte del genere Soulslike, come Sekiro, ma anche da altri generi come i Dynasty Warriors. Il gioco è divertente e più permissivo, ma questa sua natura volta all'offrire un divertimento per tutti comporta la sensazione di trovarsi di fronte ad un frullato di meccaniche incapace di brillare in uno specifico. Il gioco è valido, ma c'è una sottile linea che potrebbe dividere il giudizio popolare: se siete dei puristi del genere, potreste alzare un sopracciglio durante la vostra esperienza, mentre se siete dei fan dei giochi sopracitati potreste trovare il titolo perfetto per accompagnarvi di nuovo all'avventura.

Parrying is satisfying and combat in general is a high point, but linearity and some poor bosses hold it back from being truly memorable. However, you’ll still have a good time if you go into this with the right expectations — and the PC version gets the fixes it needs.

Si vous aimez déjà le genre des Souls-like ou les jeux exigeants de manière générale, vous n'aurez pas besoin de beaucoup pour être séduits par Wo Long Fallen Dynasty. S'il ne réinvente pas grand chose, on a affaire à de bonnes nouveautés qui rendent le gameplay addictif et vraiment fluide. Cependant, on déplore une difficulté trop importante lors de phases de boss qui en laissera plus d'un sur le carreau. La narration rattrape toutefois les bémols du titre qui s'impose comme une bonne découverte malgré tout.

Wo Long est un action-RPG très plaisant manette en mains et qui offre un beau panel de choix en termes de gameplay. Une mécanique qui change des autres jeux du genre, apportant ce petit quelque chose que d’autres titres n’ont pas. Je reproche juste le manque de finitions sur les graphismes et ce système de lobby pour les quêtes dont je ne suis pas convaincu dans ce genre de jeu.
