Having never played a Persona RPG, I enjoyed Persona Q: Shadow of the Layrinth. The fact that it resembles the Etrian Odyssey series in terms of gameplay is a plus and as a person new to the Persona series, I feel that this is another solid RPG from Atlus.

Persona Q offre il meglio di due mondi, ma assomiglia più a un Etrian Odyssey che al tanto amato spin-off di Shin Megami Tensei. E il genere dungeon crawler cui Etrian Odyssey appartiene è assolutamente di nicchia: per apprezzarlo serve parecchio tempo, pazienza e un buon spirito strategico. Persona Q rimedia ad alcune asperità cercando vari compromessi, per fortuna, ma paradossalmente rischia di allontanare quel pubblico più vasto che cerca di raggiungere con una tonnellata di fanservice che chi non conosce il franchise potrebbe trovare un po' pesante. Chi invece ha sempre sognato di veder combattere fianco a fianco Yu e Minato, invece, farebbe bene a mettere mano al portafogli.

Il soggetto di Persona Q Shadow of The Labyrinth sedurrà immediatamente chi ha vagato a lungo nelle abissali profondità allegoriche e psicanalitiche di Persona 3 e 4, tuttavia la sceneggiatura non sfiora neanche lontanamente la complessità e il rigore letterario di quello dei due capolavori, restando sulla superficie in un tripudio di comunque gustose citazioni e rimandi che amplificano il carisma di personaggi amati e conosciuti. Si tratta, malgrado la leggerezza e prolissità dei dialoghi solo in inglese, di un gioco grandioso e puro, chimerica bestia ludica che mischia con arte visionaria le invenzioni di Persona con quelle di Etrian Odissey riuscendo a superare quest’ultimo per la diabolica ed enigmatica, mai frustrante, architettura dei labirinti. Splendente videogame di nicchia che fortunatamente è giunto in occidente grazie ad un’intelligente e coraggiosa localizzazione, Persona Q vi farà trascorrere ore di piacere e dolore strategico, magico e marziale in uno stato dolcemente allucinatorio. Da non perdere nella tempesta di titoli mainstream, da alternare o fare succedere all’ultimo Shin Megami Tensei, nell’attesa del venturo Persona 5.

Persona Q is a 60-plus hour roleplaying experience that both charms and entertains. Though there were points when its puzzles completely stumped me, and the combat’s steep difficulty, made me want to launch my 3DS into orbit a few times, the enjoyable battle system, deep exploration, and generous dollops of fanservice made it worth the effort.

Contrairement à ce que l’on pourrait croire, Persona Q : Shadow of the Labyrinth est une bonne porte d'entrée pour celles et ceux qui veulent découvrir l’atmosphère si particulière des Persona. L’initié, quant à lui, savourera sans aucun doute cette redécouverte des anciens protagonistes et s’attachera très certainement aux deux petits nouveaux : Zen et Rei, à la personnalité séduisante. Avec son casting phénoménal, un humour omniprésent, des dialogues réussis et une esthétique toujours aussi travaillée, on est bel et bien en présence d'un Persona de qualité. Mais cet épisode annexe s’adresse également, et je dirais même principalement, aux aficianados ou aux curieux qui s’intéressent de près aux mécaniques du dungeon crawler. Attention néanmoins car certains puzzles, bien que surmontables, sont de véritables casse-tête en puissance et exigent une bonne dose de patience. Si les connaisseurs des Etrian Odyssey ne seront pas trop dépaysés, il faut cependant avouer qu’à plusieurs moments mes nerfs ont été mis à rude épreuve. Quoi qu’on en dise, ce Persona Q tend donc les bras à un public bien plus large qu’à l’accoutumée. Un mariage réussi bien qu’imparfait en somme, à la fois entre Persona 3 et 4, mais également entre la licence et le genre du dungeon crawler. On en redemande encore avec, qui sait, un cross-over Persona 3, 4 et 5 ?

Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth non vincerà nessun premio per l'innovazione: è esattamente il gioco che ci si aspetta nel momento in cui sentiamo dire a un amico che è un Etrian Odyssey con personaggi, menu, stile musicale, e sistema di combattimento dei Persona. Fatto sta che il gioco funziona alla grande ed è consigliatissimo soprattutto a chi già conosce e ama le serie su cui è basato. Chi non le ha mai provate, invece, potrebbe ritrovarsi piuttosto spaesato da un dungeon-crawler che fa del fan-service gran parte della sua ragion d'essere.

Persona Q should be a hardcore Persona fan’s dream game, and if you only come to the series for its character writing then it kind of is. It made me laugh out loud more than once, and I played it with a nostalgic smile on my face. But in evoking that nostalgia it reminds us of other, better games, which only serves to highlight its own failings. Weak continuity and weaker dungeon crawling gameplay make this hard to recommend to anyone who enjoys the series for its depth. If you're not bothered by a bit of stupidity, give it a play.

Wer auf Dungeon-Crawler mit Roguelike-Einschlag steht und schon an Strange Journey auf dem DS Gefallen gefunden hatte, dürfte mit Persona Q gut auf seine Kosten kommen. Vor allem, wenn man wie bei Etrian Odyssey gern selbst Hand beim Kartenzeichnen anlegt, gibt’s hier via Touchscreen ausreichend Gelegenheit dazu, während sich Zeichenmuffel natürlich auch unter die Arme greifen lassen können. Wer auf facettenreiches Party-Management steht, wird dank üppiger Charakterriege und serientypischer Dämonenzucht ebenfalls gut bedient – per StreetPass oder QR-Codes kann man seine Lieblingsschöpfungen sogar mit anderen Spielern teilen. Reinen Persona-Fans dürfte zwar der ausgeprägte Highschool-Alltag der Hauptserienteile fehlen, optionale Nebenbeschäftigungen, über die man mehr über seine illustren Weggefährten erfahren oder ihnen aktiv zur Hand gehen kann, sind aber auch hier mit an Bord. Neben den Akteuren aus Persona 3 und 4 sind auch ein paar neue Gesichter mit von der Partie, mit denen man das bizarre Highschool-Abenteuer aus zwei Blickwinkeln erleben kann. Schade nur, dass der jeweilige Protagonist im Gegensatz zu seinen Kameraden wieder mal völlig stumm bleibt und es weder eine Option auf japanischen Originalton, noch deutsche Untertitel gibt. Entgehen lassen sollte man sich die bizarren Dungeon-Ausflüge als Genrefan aber trotzdem nicht.

Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth es un juego de rol japonés muy peculiar y una verdadera rareza. Con una historia y unos personajes extraídos de Persona 3 y Persona 4, adopta una jugabilidad basada en Etrian Odyssey, con laberintos en primera persona que el jugador tendrá que mapear usando la pantalla táctil. No lo vamos a esconder, es un juego raro, con una historia que tarda algo en arrancar y un sistema de juego machacón y exigente a partes iguales. Pero si logras superar las primeras horas conseguirá picarte un montón y resultar más que entretenido.
